Forest Guard Syllabus and Exam Pattern Across States

Defence and policeState level10th or 12th passUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The forest guard syllabus is set by each state, but almost every version tests the same core: general knowledge of India and your state, everyday science with an environment angle, arithmetic, and a language section, followed by a physical round in which a long timed walk decides who goes ahead.

Because there is no single national exam, the first job is to find out which board recruits in your state. Below you will find the shared shape of the exam, gives the pattern Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh used in their last cycles as worked examples, and lists topics you can begin on today. For state-specific detail, see the MP forest guard syllabus and the vanrakshak syllabus pages.

How forest guard recruitment works

Forest guards, called vanrakshak in Hindi-speaking states, are hired by the state forest department, while a state selection board conducts the test. Rajasthan uses the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board, Madhya Pradesh uses the Employees Selection Board, Uttar Pradesh uses its Subordinate Services Selection Commission, and Bihar has used its Central Selection Board of Constable. The steps look broadly alike everywhere:

  1. Written test: multiple choice, pitched at school level.
  2. Physical standards test: height, and chest for men.
  3. Physical efficiency test: a long walk within a fixed time, sometimes with extra events.
  4. Medical examination and document check.

Some states add a screening step before all this. Rajasthan, for example, has linked recent forest recruitment to its common eligibility test, so read about the Rajasthan CET syllabus if you live there.

Forest guard exam pattern: two state examples

StandardSecondary levelClass 10 level

Notice how the weight shifts. In Rajasthan, half the paper is general knowledge and social studies with a heavy state focus, so Rajasthan history, geography and culture can make or break your score. In MP the marks are spread over five general subjects, so steady all-round preparation matters more than depth in one area.

Section marks, negative marking and even the qualification have changed between cycles. Treat the table as a guide to past papers and take the final pattern from your state board's advertisement.

Subject-wise syllabus of forest guard

General knowledge and social studies

  • History, art and culture of your state: dynasties, freedom movement, folk deities, fairs, crafts
  • Geography of the state: rivers, soils, climate, crops, minerals, forests and wildlife
  • National parks, wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves, especially those in your state
  • Indian polity basics: Constitution, rights and duties, Panchayati Raj
  • State economy and welfare schemes, current affairs of India and the state

Everyday science and environment

  • Physical and chemical changes, metals and non-metals, light and simple laws of motion
  • Human body, nutrition, common diseases and their causes
  • Ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, climate change and waste management
  • Basics of computers and information technology (listed in Rajasthan)

Mathematics

  • Number system, LCM and HCF, simplification, average, percentage
  • Ratios, profit or loss on a sale, interest of both kinds
  • Rates of working together, trains and walkers covering distance, area and volume of simple shapes
  • Reading bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs

Language (where a state includes it)

  • Hindi: sandhi, spelling, gender, idioms, synonyms and antonyms, sentence correction, passages
  • English: spotting mistakes, gap filling, single word for a phrase, changing voice, short passages

Physical tests after the written round

Many candidates who do well on paper lose out in the walk, so start training for it at the same time as your study. In the last cycles that were widely reported:

Physical efficiency walk in two states, last cycle
StateMenWomen
Rajasthan25 km in 4 hours16 km in 4 hours
Madhya Pradesh25 km in 4 hours14 km in 4 hours

Rajasthan also listed field events for forest guards such as sit-ups, a cricket ball throw, a standing broad jump and a shot put, with different events for men and women. Minimum height reported for both states was 163 cm (men) and 150 cm (women), and Rajasthan set chest measurements for men. Category relaxations apply, so confirm the exact figure for your category in the advertisement.

Where to put your study hours

Use the pattern of your own state to divide your time. A practical split for a Rajasthan-style paper:

  • About half your time on GK: make one notebook for state history and culture and another for state geography, forests and wildlife. Questions on protected areas, rivers and folk culture repeat across years.
  • Science twice a week: class 9 and 10 NCERT science covers most of it. Read the environment chapters closely, because a forest department naturally leans on ecology.
  • Maths in short daily sets: 15 questions of arithmetic in 20 minutes keeps speed up without eating your day.
  • Current affairs: 20 minutes daily on state and national news, revised every Sunday.
Mahesh from Udaipur has five months and a part-time job. He studies two hours each evening, giving Monday to Thursday to Rajasthan GK and science and Friday to maths. At dawn he walks, starting with 8 km and adding about 2 km each week, so the 25 km target feels normal by the time the physical round comes.

Frequently asked questions

Do all states follow one forest guard syllabus?

No. Each state board sets its own paper. The core of GK, science, maths and sometimes language is common, but the weight of each part, negative marking and the qualification change from state to state.

What qualification is needed for a forest guard job?

Most states ask for 10th or 12th pass, and some add a common eligibility test as a filter. The level and any linked test are set in each state's advertisement, so read that before you apply.

Does guessing hurt in the forest guard paper?

It depends on the state. Rajasthan cut a third of a mark per incorrect response in its last cycle, while MP was reported to have no deduction. Check the rule in your state's current advertisement.

How long is the walk test for forest guard?

In Rajasthan and MP, men had to walk 25 km in 4 hours. Women walked 16 km in Rajasthan and 14 km in MP within 4 hours. Other states set their own distances.

How is the syllabus of forest guard different from forester?

Forester is a higher post with a more demanding paper, and in some states it needs 12th pass while forest guard needs 10th. The subjects overlap, but forester questions go deeper. See the forester syllabus page for details.

Which part of the forest guard paper scores the most?

Where a state gives half the paper to general knowledge, as Rajasthan did, state GK and current affairs carry the most marks. Prepare that part first, then science and maths.
