UP TGT Syllabus and Revised Exam Pattern

TeachingGraduate with B.EdUttar PradeshUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The up tgt syllabus now combines two blocks inside one objective paper: 90 questions on the subject you want to teach and 30 compulsory questions on general studies, for 360 marks in 2 hours. UPESSC, the state's education recruitment commission based in Prayagraj, conducts the Trained Graduate Teacher exam for aided secondary schools, and the revised scheme is a clear break from the older 125 question paper.

If you prepared for the old version, the two changes that matter most are the new general studies part and the deduction for wrong answers. This page lays out the new pattern, the general studies topics, the UP TGT English syllabus and UP TGT Hindi syllabus in detail, and a Hindi language recap at the end.

How UP TGT selection works now

Selection for TGT posts rests on one written exam. Reports of the latest advertisement say there is no interview for TGT, so your written score decides the merit list, followed by document verification. That puts every mark in the paper under pressure, especially now that wrong answers carry a penalty.

The posts are for teaching middle and high school classes in government aided secondary schools across Uttar Pradesh. Each candidate applies for one subject, and the subject part of the paper is set for that subject only, while the general studies part is the same for everyone.

Reports of the latest advertisement also mention a teacher eligibility test pass among the qualifications. The rules for qualifications, age and the size of the negative mark should be read in the advertisement itself on the UPESSC website.

Revised UP TGT exam pattern

PartQuestionsMarks
Subject concerned90270
General studies3090
Total120360

A right answer is worth 3 marks, and with 2 hours on the clock, you get one minute per question. Under the earlier scheme the paper had 125 subject questions of 4 marks each, 500 marks in all, with no negative marking. Sources disagree on the size of the penalty per incorrect response, so confirm it from the official advertisement before deciding how aggressively to guess.

General studies part (30 questions)

This compulsory part is new for most TGT aspirants, and 90 marks is too large to leave to luck. The published topics are broad:

  • Indian history and culture, with weight on the freedom struggle
  • Geography of the country and of UP: physical features, people and economy
  • The Constitution, polity and panchayats or urban local bodies
  • Indian economy: planning, reforms, national income, sustainable development
  • Everyday science from physics, chemistry and biology, and recent scientific developments
  • Uttar Pradesh special: history, culture, festivals, agriculture, population and state schemes
  • National and international current affairs

Thirty questions over seven areas means you should go wide rather than deep. Class 6 to 10 NCERT books plus a good UP general knowledge guide cover most of it.

UP TGT English syllabus

The English subject paper has two halves, language and literature.

Language and grammar

  • Unseen passage for comprehension
  • Parts of speech, tenses, prepositions and agreement of subject and verb
  • Spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Narration (direct and indirect speech)
  • Transformation of sentences

Literature

  • Forms of literature: poetry, drama, novel, essay and short story
  • Major authors and their contributions, including Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Keats and Galsworthy
  • Figures of speech used in poetry

Grammar questions are usually quick, so bank time there and spend it on literature, where questions ask about specific works and periods.

UP TGT Hindi syllabus

The Hindi subject paper reaches well beyond grammar and even includes a Sanskrit component.

  • History of Hindi literature: Aadikal, Bhaktikal (sant, sufi, Ram and Krishna streams), Reetikal and Aadhunik kal with the Bharatendu and Dwivedi periods, Chhayavad, Pragativad, Prayogvad and Nayi Kavita
  • Prose forms: essay, drama, novel, story, biography, autobiography, memoir, sketch, travelogue and satire, with their writers
  • Kavyashastra: ras, chhand, alankar, and the merits and faults of poetry
  • Language and grammar: dialects of Hindi, Devanagari script, sandhi, samas, gender, number, karak, synonyms, antonyms, idioms and proverbs, and common errors
  • Sanskrit: major poets and dramatists such as Kalidas, Bhavabhuti and Bharavi, plus sandhi, samas, shabd roop, dhatu roop and translation

Students who skip the Sanskrit portion lose easy marks, since grammar questions there are formula like once learnt.

Other subjects you can apply for

The commission advertises TGT posts in many subjects. The latest list reported includes mathematics, science, Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, biology, social science, commerce, home science, agriculture, physical education, art and drawing, music (vocal and instrumental) and sewing. Each subject has its own 90 question syllabus on the UPESSC website.

If you are weighing UP TGT against other state or central teaching jobs, compare it with the KVS TGT syllabus and the DSSSB TGT syllabus, or see the senior post on the UP PGT syllabus page. Earlier qualifying scores sit on our UP TGT cut off page.

A study plan for the new UP TGT paper

Split your time roughly three to one between the subject and general studies, which matches the marks.

  1. First six weeks: finish the full subject syllabus once from graduation level books and NCERT Class 9 to 12 texts.
  2. Weeks 7 to 9: general studies, one area every three days, with UP general knowledge at the end.
  3. Weeks 10 to 12: timed 120 question papers. Track how many wrong answers you make, because each now costs you.
Arvind teaches at a private school in Kanpur and has chosen English as his TGT subject. Literature questions used to sink his practice scores. He now reads one author a day, noting major works and the period, and keeps the commute for current affairs. Within a month his literature accuracy improves, and he stops guessing blindly on general studies questions he cannot narrow down.
