UP LT Grade Syllabus and Exam Pattern

TeachingUPPSCGraduate plus B.EdUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The LT grade syllabus for UPPSC assistant teacher posts has two parts in the objective paper: a short general studies section and a much longer section on your chosen teaching subject, such as Hindi, English, maths, science or social science. The subject part carries four times as many questions as GS, so your degree subject decides most of your score.

LT grade teachers teach in government secondary schools of Uttar Pradesh. The latest recruitment, for 7,466 posts, was run by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission with a preliminary exam, a mains exam for those shortlisted, and document verification. Here is what each stage asks and how to prepare for it.

Selection stages in the latest LT grade recruitment

  1. Preliminary exam: an objective screening paper on general studies and your subject. Marks here only decide who moves on.
  2. Mains exam: for shortlisted candidates of each subject. Reports describe it as a deeper, descriptive test of subject knowledge.
  3. Document verification: your degree, B.Ed and category papers are verified before UPPSC declares the selection list.

Earlier LT grade rounds used a single written exam, so older guides may not mention a mains at all. The advertisement for your own cycle is what counts.

Paper total150 in 2 hours

The paper is pen and paper with an OMR sheet. Every incorrect bubble wipes out one third of that item's marks; skipped items neither add nor subtract. Reports differ on whether each question carries one mark or two, which changes the total but not the 1 to 4 balance between GS and subject.

The mains scheme (number of papers, marks and time) and the exact prelims marking are set in the UPPSC advertisement and syllabus annexure for each round. Download that annexure from UPPSC first, then build your timetable around it.

General studies topics in Part A

  • Recent happenings across India and abroad
  • Indian history and the struggle for independence
  • Constitution, polity and how government works
  • Geography of India
  • Economic and social development, environment
  • General science
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Basic Hindi and English grammar at secondary level

Thirty questions is a small block. Aim for steady accuracy here using class 9 and 10 NCERT books and a few months of current affairs, and save your real hours for Part B.

LT grade English syllabus and Hindi syllabus

The subject part is set at graduation level. Here is the UP LT grade English syllabus, followed by Hindi, the two subjects most people ask about.

Other subjects

Posts are also advertised in Sanskrit, Urdu, maths, science, social science, computer, commerce, agriculture, home science, art, music and physical education, each with its own syllabus annexure.

LT grade mains syllabus: what the second stage adds

The mains is where you prove depth. Since UPPSC publishes its scheme with each advertisement, take the paper list and marks from there. In general, expect questions that ask you to explain concepts in your subject, write answers in a structured way, and show the kind of command a teacher of classes 9 and 10 needs. Practise writing 150 to 200 word answers on core topics of your subject while preparing for prelims, so the switch after the prelims result is not abrupt.

The same subject depth also helps with the UP TGT syllabus, which covers similar classes in aided schools, and the UP PGT syllabus if you hold a postgraduate degree.

A 14 week plan for the subject heavy paper

  • Weeks 1 to 6: your subject, unit by unit, from graduation textbooks; two units a week with MCQ practice at the end of each.
  • Weeks 1 to 10 (daily, 40 minutes): one GS area at a time, plus a weekly current affairs review.
  • Weeks 7 to 10: previous UPPSC subject papers, chapter wise; mark what keeps appearing.
  • Weeks 11 to 14: timed two hour mocks of the full paper, and short written answers twice a week for the mains.
Rahul, an English graduate with a B.Ed employed by an unaided school in Prayagraj, had only evenings free. He found literature questions took him longest, so he made one page timelines of writers and their works for each period and revised one timeline every night. Within a month his subject mock accuracy went from about 60 percent to over 75.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a mains exam in UP LT grade now?

Yes. The latest recruitment added a mains exam after an objective prelims. Older rounds had only one written exam, so check which scheme your advertisement follows.

How many questions come from my subject?

In the prelims, 120 of the 150 questions are from the subject you applied for and 30 are general studies.

What qualification is needed for LT grade?

Usually you need graduation in the subject concerned along with a B.Ed, with subject-specific rules for posts such as computer, art or physical education. The advertisement lists the exact degree combinations.

What age band does LT grade allow?

For unreserved applicants the latest round was reported at 21 to 40 years. SC, ST, OBC and other notified groups receive relaxation by Uttar Pradesh rules, and the advertisement fixes the reference date for counting age.

Does the LT grade objective paper have negative marking?

Yes. Each mistake knocks off a third of what the item carries, so random guessing hurts; leaving a question unattempted costs nothing.

Is UPTET needed for LT grade?

LT grade recruitment is done by UPPSC on its own eligibility rules, which centre on graduation and B.Ed. Read the advertisement, and see the UPTET syllabus page if you also plan to teach at the elementary level.
