The KVS TGT syllabus runs in two written tiers: a 300 mark Tier 1 aptitude paper that you only need to clear, and a 100 mark Tier 2 paper on your own teaching subject, which, once a 100 mark interview is added, settles who becomes a Trained Graduate Teacher in a Kendriya Vidyalaya. TGTs teach classes 6 to 10, so Tier 2 tests your subject at that depth along with how you would teach it.
In the latest cycle CBSE held one combined recruitment for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, with a shared Tier 1 for teaching posts. This page lays out each stage of the TGT selection, the topics behind every section, what the English and Hindi TGT papers usually stress, and a timetable that splits your effort sensibly between the two tiers.

How the KVS TGT syllabus maps onto selection
- Tier 1: an OMR screening test common to the teaching posts. You must reach the qualifying mark, but this score is never added to your rank.
- Tier 2: a paper set for your own subject, such as English, Hindi, maths, science or social studies. This is where the race is decided.
- Interview: 100 marks, for candidates shortlisted on Tier 2.
- Document verification and medical before an offer is made.
For merit, Tier 2 carries an 85 percent share and the interview a 15 percent share. Put simply, every extra mark in Tier 2 is worth far more than the same mark in the interview room.
KVS TGT tier 1 syllabus and section marks
| Part | Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reasoning (general) | 20 | 60 |
| 2 | Numbers (numerical ability) | 20 | 60 |
| 3 | Computers (basic literacy) | 20 | 60 |
| 4 | GK and current events | 20 | 60 |
| 5 | English competency | 10 | 30 |
| 6 | Second language competency (Hindi or another listed Indian language) | 10 | 30 |
| Total | 100 | 300 | |
- Reasoning: analogies, coding, blood relations, seating puzzles, syllogisms, directions, non verbal figure questions.
- Numerical ability: percentages, ratios, averages, profit, interest, speed and work, reading a small table or chart.
- Computer literacy: hardware and software, memory units, operating systems, office tools, internet, email, shortcut keys, cyber safety.
- General knowledge: history, geography, polity, economy, everyday science, books and authors, awards, sports and recent events.
- Languages: grammar, vocabulary and a short passage in English and in your chosen Indian language.
With a three to one reward and penalty ratio, a random guess is a losing bet over many questions. Hold back unless you can strike off half the options with confidence.
KVS exam pattern for TGT tier 2
| Part | Questions | Marks | Penalty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Objective | 60 | 60 | 0.25 for each wrong answer |
| Descriptive | 10 | 40 | None |
| Total | 70 | 100 |
The time is shared across both parts, so you choose how long to spend on the written answers. At about 4 marks each, the descriptive questions expect focused answers of a paragraph or two: explaining a concept, solving a problem with steps, or planning a lesson activity.
Each subject's KVS TGT tier 2 syllabus appears post by post at the end of the recruitment notice. It covers subject matter at secondary level and the teaching of that subject, and it can be revised between cycles.
KVS TGT English syllabus
For the English post, expect Tier 2 to go well beyond the Tier 1 language section.
- Grammar: tenses, modals, determiners, reported speech, voice, clauses and sentence transformation, error correction
- Vocabulary: idioms, phrasal verbs, word formation, synonyms and antonyms in context
- Reading: unseen prose and poetry, with questions on theme, tone and figures of speech
- Literature: literary forms and devices, major periods and well known authors, as listed in the annexure
- Writing: letters, notices, short essays and other formats that you would teach in classes 9 and 10
- Teaching of English: language skills, communicative methods, assessment of speaking and writing
KVS TGT Hindi syllabus
The Hindi TGT paper rests on grammar and literature of secondary school level, along with methods of teaching Hindi.
- Vyakaran: sandhi and its kinds, the six samas types, ling, vachan, upsarg with pratyay, kaal, vakya bhed and vakya shuddhi, alankar, ras and chhand
- Shabd gyan: vilom and paryayvachi, tadbhav versus tatsam, words with many meanings, lokoktiyan and muhavare
- Sahitya: periods of Hindi literature, major poets and prose writers, kinds of prose writing
- Apathit: unseen prose and verse passages
- Shikshan: the four language skills as applied to Hindi lessons, evaluation and remedial work
Teachers of maths, science and social studies get a paper built the same way: subject content up to class 10 depth with pedagogy, so the plan below works for them too.
Eligibility at a glance
The latest notification, as reported, asks for a bachelor's degree holding 50 percent or more overall and the post's subjects in its combination, a B.Ed or the integrated four year version, a CTET Paper II pass, and competence to teach through Hindi as well as English medium. The upper age limit for TGT is 35, relaxed by the standard central rules for reserved groups, women and serving staff. Special TGT posts such as physical education, music, art and computer science have their own degree rules. Read the full post wise table in the latest notification before applying.
Not yet through CTET? Start with the CTET paper 2 syllabus, since much of its pedagogy also helps in KVS Tier 2.
Sharing your months between the two tiers

- After that: shift 80 percent of your time to your subject. Read the class 6 to 10 NCERT textbooks for your subject end to end, then the topics in the annexure that go beyond them.
- Writing practice: draft a pair of 4 mark answers daily, giving each 8 minutes, then compare them with the textbook explanation.
- Interview: prepare a two minute demonstration of one lesson and be ready to talk about classroom discipline and inclusive teaching.
For the other teaching posts, see the KVS PRT syllabus and the KVS PGT syllabus, or the full KVS syllabus overview. Earlier qualifying scores are discussed under KVS cut off.
