The RPSC syllabus is not one document but a set of exam-specific schemes, and the four that most aspirants look for are RAS/RTS, school lecturer (first grade), senior teacher (second grade) and sub inspector. All of them share a large block of Rajasthan general knowledge, and in every objective paper an incorrect pick costs you a third of what that item is worth.
Rajasthan Public Service Commission, based in Ajmer, publishes a separate syllabus with each advertisement. This page lines up the patterns side by side, shows the common core you can study once, and points you to the detailed page for each exam.

Which RPSC exam are you preparing for
The commission recruits for the state's top administrative posts, for teachers in government schools and colleges, for police sub inspectors and for many technical and legal posts. Lower clerical and field posts such as patwari and VDO go to the staff selection board instead, so check which body runs your exam before you start.
- RAS/RTS Combined Competitive Exam: prelims, mains, interview. Graduate level.
- School Lecturer (first grade teacher): two objective papers for teaching classes 11 and 12.
- Senior Teacher (second grade): two objective papers for teaching classes 9 and 10.
- Sub Inspector and Platoon Commander: written papers, then physical tests and interview.
- Assistant Prosecution Officer: law papers for prosecution posts.

Negative marking and the fifth option
On commission papers, a mistaken answer is penalised by one third of its own marks. Each question also carries a fifth bubble that you darken when you choose not to answer. Published guidance on this rule warns that a sheet where over a tenth of the items carry no darkened circle may be rejected, so either answer or mark the fifth option for every single question.
RPSC mains syllabus for RAS
Only RAS has a descriptive mains stage. Its four written papers carry 200 marks apiece:
- General Studies I: history and culture of Rajasthan and India, modern world history, the economy of India, the world and Rajasthan, and sociology, management, accounting and auditing.
- Second GS paper: ethics in administration, science and tech in daily use and research, and geology plus geography at three levels: global, national and state.
- Third GS paper: polity of India and of Rajasthan, public administration, plus behaviour, yoga with sport, and basic law.
- General Hindi and General English: grammar, translation, precis, letters and essays in both languages.
For the full topic list paper by paper, see our RAS syllabus page, and for the scores that cleared each stage, the RAS cut off page.
Teacher exams: what Paper I and Paper II cover
School Lecturer Paper I
- History of Rajasthan and the Indian national movement
- Geography of Rajasthan, Indian polity and general science
- Mental ability, basic statistics and maths, language ability in Hindi and English
- Current affairs of Rajasthan and India
Senior Teacher Paper I
- Rajasthan history, geography and culture
- Current affairs of Rajasthan, India and the world
- Educational psychology: learning, development, motivation, intelligence and teaching methods
Paper II in both exams is your teaching subject. The school lecturer paper reaches senior secondary, graduation and postgraduation level, while the senior teacher paper stays at secondary, senior secondary and graduation level with pedagogy questions. Detailed lists are on the RPSC 1st grade syllabus and RPSC 2nd grade syllabus pages.
Planning across more than one RPSC exam
Many aspirants write two or three commission exams in the same year. Start with the shared Rajasthan core for six to eight weeks, then branch out. If you are a postgraduate teacher aspirant, the subject paper carries double the weight of Paper I, so give it about two thirds of your time once the core is done. For RAS, begin writing practice answers early, because mains is descriptive and no objective paper prepares you for that. Solve past RPSC papers under the negative marking rule, since guessing habits from exams without penalty can sink your score here.
Frequently asked questions
Is the RPSC syllabus the same for every exam?
No. Each exam has its own scheme and topic list. What stays common is Rajasthan general knowledge and the one third negative marking in objective papers.
Which RPSC exam has a mains stage?
Among the major exams, only RAS/RTS has a descriptive mains with four papers of 200 marks each. Teacher exams are fully objective, and SI has written papers followed by physical tests and interview.
Do I need to fill every bubble on the RPSC OMR sheet?
You need to mark something for every question, either an answer or the fifth option for not attempting it. If too many items, reportedly above one in ten, show no mark at all, the sheet may be rejected, so read the instructions on your admit card.
Can I write RPSC papers in Hindi?
Yes. RPSC prints its question booklets in both Hindi and English, and RAS mains answers can be written in either language except for the language sections. Check your exam's notice for exact rules.
Where do I download the official RPSC syllabus?
Every advertisement comes with its own syllabus file. Open the commission's portal, go to the recruitment advertisement for your exam and save the attached scheme.
