Senior teacher exam: GK and psychology paper plus a 300 mark subject paper

RPSC 2nd grade syllabus and exam pattern

Civil servicesGraduate plus B.EdRajasthan schoolsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The RPSC 2nd grade syllabus, used for the Senior Teacher (Grade II) recruitment in Rajasthan government schools, has two objective papers: Paper I on Rajasthan, India and world general knowledge plus educational psychology for 200 marks, and Paper II on your teaching subject for 300 marks. Both papers carry 2 marks per question and a one third penalty for every wrong answer.

Paper II is where the merit list is usually decided, because it carries 60 percent of the total and reaches up to graduation level. Below you will find the marks split inside each paper, each topic list, a Hindi recap and a study plan built around those numbers.

How the senior teacher exam is structured

RPSC holds one written stage for senior teachers. Nothing like a separate screening round exists here. You sit Paper I, which is common to every subject, and then Paper II in the subject you applied for, such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Urdu or Punjabi. The subjects on offer change with each advertisement, so check the subject wise posts in your advertisement.

Your merit position depends on the combined marks of both papers. Candidates on the list are then called for document verification and counselling. Because Paper I is the same for everyone, it often separates candidates who are level in their subject paper.

RPSC answer sheets in recent exams have carried a fifth option to mark a question you are skipping, and a sheet with too many fully blank questions can lead to disqualification. Read the instructions printed on your admit card and OMR sheet for the exact rule in your exam.

For the full list of RPSC exams and their schemes, see the RPSC syllabus overview. Many senior teacher aspirants also prepare for the REET Mains level 2 syllabus at the same time, while more teaching exams are grouped on the teaching exams hub.

Two things stand out. Rajasthan specific content alone is worth 100 marks in Paper I, and school level content of your own subject is worth 180 marks in Paper II. Together that is more than half the exam.

Paper I topics: Rajasthan, India, world and psychology

  • Location, relief, climate, drainage, vegetation, agriculture, livestock and dairy, population, industries, planning and tourism
  • Ancient sites such as Kalibangan, Ahar, Ganeshwar and Bairath

  • India's monsoon, drainage, changing agriculture and industry, national income and poverty reduction
  • Constitution: making, features, Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, President, Prime Minister, federalism
  • National movement, foreign policy and India's role in the United Nations

Psychology of the learner

  • Meaning and scope, learning theories, transfer of learning and constructivism
  • Physical, emotional and social development of the learner
  • Personality, intelligence, creativity, emotional intelligence and motivation
  • Individual differences, gifted and slow learners, children with special needs

Paper II: what your subject paper covers

Each subject has its own official syllabus PDF, but every one follows the same three layers.

  • Secondary and senior secondary level (180 marks): the content of classes 9 to 12 in that subject. For Science this means physics, chemistry and biology chapters; for Social Science it means history, geography, polity and economics at board level.
  • Graduation level (80 marks): deeper topics from the undergraduate course. In Hindi that can be literary history, poetics and grammar at a higher level; in Mathematics it reaches calculus, algebra and vectors beyond school.
  • Teaching methods (40 marks): aims of teaching the subject, lesson planning, teaching aids, methods suited to that subject and evaluation.

Save the subject PDF that matches your application from the syllabus section of the RPSC website and tick off each unit as you finish it.

Where to focus first

Start with the 180 mark school level block of Paper II. NCERT and Rajasthan board textbooks for classes 9 to 12 match this layer closely, and questions here reward accuracy more than depth. Next, build the Rajasthan block of Paper I, since its 100 marks repeat themes year after year: forts and painting schools, folk deities, rivers and soils, and the integration story.

Graduation level questions are harder and fewer, so cover them after the school base is firm. The 40 marks of educational psychology overlap heavily with what you studied for REET and B.Ed, which makes them a quick win.

Pooja is a B.Ed graduate in Hindi with five months to go. She spends mornings on class 9 to 12 Hindi grammar and literature, evenings on Rajasthan GK, and keeps Sunday for one full timed practice of both papers. In the last month she adds the graduation level poetics units she had kept aside.

A twelve week study plan

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: school level content of your subject, two chapters a day, with short notes. Alongside, Rajasthan geography and polity.
  2. Weeks 5 to 7: Rajasthan history and culture, India and world GK, and the educational psychology units.
  3. Weeks 8 to 10: graduation level topics and the teaching methods part of Paper II.
  4. Weeks 11 and 12: RPSC past papers under time limits, a daily current affairs review for Rajasthan, and revision of weak units.

When practising, keep the one third penalty in mind. A guess that is a pure coin toss costs more than it earns over many questions, so use the skip option rather than random marking.

Books and sources

Your subject's NCERT texts for classes 9 to 12, read together with the Rajasthan board textbooks, form the backbone of Paper II. For Paper I, use the Rajasthan board books on the state's history and culture, a standard Indian polity text, and a B.Ed level educational psychology book. Treat the RPSC subject PDF as a tick list and park anything outside it. Past question papers are published by RPSC on its website, and they show how deep each unit is examined.

Frequently asked questions

Do all subjects share one RPSC 2nd grade syllabus?

Every applicant writes an identical Paper I. Paper II changes with your subject, but each subject paper follows the same split of school level, graduation level and teaching methods questions.

How costly is a wrong answer here?

RPSC deducts a third of a question's value whenever you mark it wrongly. Since each question is worth 2, every slip takes away roughly 0.67, so careless guessing adds up quickly.

Which degree makes me eligible for senior teacher?

You need a graduation with the relevant subject as an optional subject and a B.Ed or equivalent teaching degree. Science and Social Science posts ask for specific subject combinations, so read the qualification table in the latest advertisement.

What is the age limit?

Recent advertisements have allowed general candidates from 18 up to 40 years of age, and Rajasthan's own rules give extra years to reserved category candidates and to women. The cut off date for counting age is given in each notification.

How is this different from the 1st grade exam?

The school lecturer exam is for classes 11 and 12 and goes up to postgraduate depth in the subject paper. The RPSC 1st grade syllabus page sets out that scheme in full.

Does REET preparation help here?

Yes, for educational psychology and teaching methods. The subject depth and the Rajasthan GK in this exam go further, so treat REET notes as a starting point only.
