KVS NVS Cut Off: How Shortlisting Works

TeachingPost wise listsCategory wiseUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The KVS NVS cut off is the smallest mark that still puts a candidate on the next list for a given post, subject and category. In the combined KVS and NVS teacher drive notified in November 2025, Tier 1 is a qualifying screening test, and the cut off simply marks where the shortlist of ten candidates per vacancy ends.

This page explains each cut off point in the process, what earlier KVS lists looked like, why you should be careful with expected cut off numbers, and where the official lists are posted.

What the KVS NVS cut off means at each tier

There is not one cut off in this recruitment but three, one at each gate:

Where cut offs are drawn in the joint KVS NVS process
GateWho moves aheadWhat sets the line
Tier 1 to Tier 2Ten per seat, widened for a tie at the boundaryTier 1 score, post and category wise
Tier 2 to interviewUp to 3 times the vacancies, with tiesTier 2 score
Tier 2 to skill testUp to 5 times the vacancies, with ties (stenographer and JSA posts)Tier 2 score
Final selectionCandidates within the vacanciesTier 2 at 85 percent plus interview at 15 percent, or Tier 2 alone where there is no interview

Tier 1 scores serve this shortlist and are then set aside. That is why a Tier 1 cut off tells you about competition, not about your final chance.

KVS tier 1 cut off: how the number is fixed

Because shortlisting runs at ten per vacancy, the KVS tier 1 cut off for a subject depends mostly on how many seats that subject has in your category and how many people sat the paper. A TGT subject with a few hundred posts and a huge applicant pool will need a higher score than a post with fewer takers. Other factors also matter:

  • Negative marking. Because three wrong bubbles cancel one right bubble, careless guessing drags many scores down and keeps cut offs lower than raw attempt counts suggest.
  • Common paper, separate lists. PRT, TGT and PGT candidates sit a similar Tier 1 paper, but each list is drawn against its own vacancies.
  • Category and disability seats. Each reserved category and each disability type gets its own line, which is why the gaps between categories vary by post.
Tier 1 is described in the notification as qualifying. Read the notification and the result notice for any minimum qualifying marks before you assume a score is safe.

Past KVS cut off: PRT interview list, 2023

The previous KVS recruitment, run separately before the joint cycle, used a single computer based written test of 180 questions for 180 marks, as reported at the time. Its PRT interview shortlist, released in October 2023 after the test held in February 2023, carried these category wise cut offs as reported in the press.

OBC127.2476
SC121.6619
ST103.3192
Orthopedically handicapped118.3129

The decimals suggest that scores were normalised across shifts. These numbers belong to a different pattern and paper length, so they do not convert into a target for the current 300 mark Tier 1. Use them only to see how far apart categories usually sit.

Why you should treat the KVS NVS expected cut off with care

After the Tier 1 paper in January, many sites published expected cut off ranges for PRT, TGT and PGT. These were built from early answer key estimates, and they differ widely between sources. We have not listed them as facts because the real line for your subject and category depends on its own vacancy count. Use your Tier 1 score and the number of seats in your subject to judge your chances, and wait for the official shortlist.

Kiran, a TGT Social Studies candidate, worked out about 160 marks from the answer key. Instead of chasing forum numbers, she checked her subject's vacancies in the notification, saw a large OBC count, and began Tier 2 subject revision the same week. By the time the Tier 2 list appeared in late February, she was already a month into her plan.

A pass mark is not the same as the KVS shortlist line

A qualifying mark, where one is set, is a floor every candidate must reach. A selection cut off is a ceiling set by competition. In this recruitment you could clear any minimum floor in Tier 1 and still miss the ten per vacancy list. Likewise in Tier 2, being in the top three times the vacancies only earns an interview; final selection depends on Tier 2 at 85 percent combined with the interview at 15 percent. Subject topics are on the KVS TGT syllabus, the KVS PGT syllabus, plus the KVS PRT syllabus.

What could move the next cut off

  • Vacancy count per subject. More seats in a subject means a longer shortlist and a lower line.
  • Number of applicants. A new batch of CTET qualifiers, or several years without a drive, swells the applicant pool.
  • Paper difficulty and answer key changes. Dropped or corrected questions after objections shift every score.
  • Joint or separate recruitment. Whether KVS and NVS recruit together again changes the size of the pool.

How to check the official KVS cut off

  1. Watch the recruitment notices on kvsangathan.nic.in and navodaya.gov.in, and the examination notices on cbse.gov.in.
  2. Open the post wise result notice for your post and subject; Tier 2 results for several posts were declared in September.
  3. Read the category wise and disability wise marks given in the notice, along with your own scorecard.
  4. Keep a copy of the notice, since later stages refer back to the same lists.

Frequently asked questions

What is the KVS NVS tier 1 cut off?

Think of it as whatever mark the final person on the list of ten per vacancy scored, worked out for your post, subject and category, ties included. Every list ends at a different mark, which is why no one figure fits all candidates.

Do Tier 1 marks count in final selection?

No. Tier 1 only screens candidates for Tier 2. For teaching posts the final list blends Tier 2 (85 percent weight) with the interview (15 percent weight).

Does one cut off for kvs tier 1 cover PRT, TGT and PGT alike?

No. Seats are counted separately for every post and subject, and each category inside them gets a separate line. Two candidates with the same score can be shortlisted in one subject and miss out in another.

Are the expected cut off numbers online reliable?

Treat them as rough guesses built from answer key estimates. They often disagree with each other, and only the official shortlist decides who moves on.

How many candidates go to the interview?

For posts with an interview, Tier 2 marks pick three candidates per seat, plus ties at the last place. For stenographer and JSA posts it is five times the vacancies for the skill test.

Where are official KVS NVS results published?

On the KVS and NVS websites and through the CBSE examination portal named in the notice. Check the result notice there for your post's category wise marks.
