The KVS PGT syllabus now runs over two written tiers: a common Tier 1 screening paper of 100 questions on reasoning, numeracy, computers, general knowledge and two languages, after which comes a Tier 2 paper in the subject you will teach, mixing multiple choice and written answers. Candidates who make the Tier 2 shortlist then meet a 100 mark interview board, and selection weighs Tier 2 at 85 percent and the interview at 15 percent.
Post Graduate Teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas teach classes 11 and 12, so the subject paper expects command of the senior secondary curriculum and beyond. The latest combined recruitment for Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas was conducted by CBSE, and this guide follows that notification. Here you will find the KVS exam pattern for PGT, what each part tests, and a sensible way to balance the screening paper against the subject paper.

The PGT selection path
- Tier 1: a screening test shared by teaching and many non teaching posts. You must clear it, and candidates are shortlisted for Tier 2 in about ten times the number of vacancies by category, yet the score itself is left out of the merit list.
- Tier 2: a paper in your PGT subject, such as physics, English or commerce. This is the score that counts.
- Interview: 100 marks, testing subject depth, teaching approach and communication.
- Document check and medical before an offer of appointment.
The same structure applies to PRT and TGT, with different subject papers. If you are weighing levels, read our KVS TGT syllabus and KVS PRT syllabus, or the overview on the KVS syllabus page.

KVS exam pattern for PGT: the Tier 2 paper
| Part | Questions | Marks | Penalty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Objective | 60 | 60 | Minus 0.25 per wrong answer |
| Descriptive | 10 | 40 | None |
| Total, 2 hours 30 minutes | 70 | 100 |
Each PGT subject gets its own question paper. Besides core subject content at senior secondary and graduation level, the post wise syllabus in the notification adds teaching aptitude and perspectives on education: learning theories, inclusive classrooms, assessment, competency based teaching and the current national education policy and curriculum framework. The descriptive questions carry 4 marks each on average, so expect answers of a short paragraph that explain a concept, solve a problem or plan a lesson.
Subject content in the KVS PGT syllabus
Your subject block follows the class 11 and 12 NCERT books and extends into undergraduate topics. A few examples:
- Physics: mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, modern physics and electronics.
- Chemistry: physical, organic and inorganic chemistry with reaction mechanisms and coordination compounds.
- Biology: plant and animal physiology, genetics, biotechnology and ecology.
- Economics: micro and macro theory, statistics for economics and the Indian economy.
- Commerce: accountancy, business studies, company accounts and auditing.
- Computer science: Python programming, data structures, databases with SQL and networks.
KVS PGT English syllabus
For PGT English, the subject part typically covers literature in English (poetry, drama, fiction and prose across periods), literary terms and criticism, advanced grammar and usage, reading comprehension and the methods of teaching English as a second language. Expect a descriptive question or two on writing tasks or the teaching of a lesson.
Who can sit for PGT
In the latest notice, a PGT candidate needed a master's degree with at least 50 percent marks in the relevant subject together with a B.Ed. The upper age limit for PGT was 40 years, and reserved groups got the usual central government age relaxation. Some subjects, such as computer science, accept specific alternative degrees.
Because conditions change between notifications, check the subject wise qualification table before you apply. Past patterns of selection marks are on our KVS cut off page.
Splitting your time between the tiers
Tier 1 is only a gate, but it is a crowded one, so spend roughly one hour in three on it until you are scoring comfortably in mocks. Put the rest into the subject paper, because Tier 2 alone decides 85 percent of your rank.
- Weeks 1 to 4: work through the senior secondary NCERT books of your subject one chapter at a time, plus 30 minutes of Tier 1 reasoning or numeracy daily.
- Weeks 5 to 8: take up the college level chapters together with the pedagogy portion. Write two descriptive answers a day in under eight minutes each.
- Weeks 9 and 10: full Tier 1 mocks on an OMR sheet to practise filling bubbles within two hours.
- Weeks 11 and 12: timed Tier 2 practice, keeping 40 to 45 minutes for the 10 descriptive answers.
Books and reading list
Begin with your subject's NCERT books for the two senior classes, followed by the standard university texts you used during your master's. For the pedagogy part, a B.Ed psychology and teaching methods book plus the national education policy and curriculum framework documents are enough. For Tier 1, any general reasoning and arithmetic practice book at the level of SSC exams will do.

How much does the interview count?
The interview carries 100 marks and makes up 15 percent of the final merit. Tier 2 makes up the remaining 85 percent.
What upper age applies to KVS PGT applicants?

In the latest combined recruitment, the Tier 1 paper was common to both, and the Tier 2 subject papers followed the same design. Always read the post wise syllabus for the organisation you apply to.
