KVS PRT Syllabus and Exam Pattern for Primary Teachers

Teaching12th plus D.El.EdCTET Paper IUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The KVS PRT syllabus has two written tiers. Tier 1 is a qualifying 300 mark paper on reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy, general knowledge and two languages; Tier 2 is a 100 mark paper with objective and descriptive questions that, together with a 100 mark interview, decides the merit list for Primary Teacher posts in Kendriya Vidyalayas.

In the latest recruitment cycle CBSE ran a combined exam for KVS and Navodaya posts. This syllabus of KVS PRT guide sets out both tiers, the topics to cover, how the final marks are weighted and a plan for working teachers. Applying for higher posts as well? The KVS TGT syllabus covers graduate teachers, while the KVS syllabus page gives the full picture.

How PRT selection works in Kendriya Vidyalayas

  1. Tier 1: an OMR based screening paper. You have to clear it, though the marks never reach the merit list.
  2. Tier 2: the paper that carries weight. Shortlisting for interview follows the Tier 2 result.
  3. Interview: 100 marks, testing teaching aptitude, communication and suitability for the classroom.
  4. Document verification and medical before appointment.

The final list combines Tier 2 and interview in an 85 to 15 ratio. A strong Tier 2 therefore matters far more than a strong interview, but a weak interview can still push you below candidates with similar written marks.

The descriptive part averages 4 marks a question, so expect short answers that explain a concept, plan an activity or respond to a classroom situation. Many aspirants call this stage the KVS PRT mains, and its syllabus is printed post wise in an annexure to the notification.

Topics in the KVS PRT mains syllabus

The Tier 2 syllabus for PRT is built around what a primary teacher actually does. Reported topic areas include:

  • Understanding the learner: child development in the primary years, individual differences, and inclusion of learners who have disabilities or learning difficulties.
  • Teaching and learning: learning theories, activity based and play based methods, lesson planning, assessment for learning, use of ICT in class.
  • Perspectives in education: National Education Policy, the RTE Act, child rights and foundational literacy and numeracy.
  • School organisation: classroom management, school and community partnership, leadership basics.
  • Primary level content: mathematics, environmental studies and language at the primary stage, taught through pedagogy.
Download the post wise Tier 2 syllabus from the official CBSE or KVS website for your cycle. It is the only reliable list, and it can change between notifications.

Where to focus your preparation

Tier 1 is qualifying but has a stiff penalty: each wrong answer takes 1 mark from a 3 mark question. Do not guess wildly in a paper you only need to pass. Tier 2 is where rank is made, and its descriptive part rewards candidates who can write clearly about classroom practice.

Pooja teaches at a private primary school and has four months before Tier 1. She revises reasoning and numeric ability for 45 minutes on weekdays, keeps computer basics for Saturdays, and reads current affairs on her phone during breaks. After Tier 1 she switches fully to pedagogy, writing one 150 word answer on a classroom scenario every day, drawn from her own lessons.

Books: NCERT primary textbooks for EVS, maths and languages, NCERT and NEP documents for pedagogy, and the CTET Paper I preparation you have already done.
