EMRS TGT syllabus for Tier 1 and Tier 2

TeachingGraduate + B.EdCTET Paper IIUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The EMRS TGT syllabus runs across a pair of written tests: a 100 mark Tier 1 screening test covering GK, logic, computers, teaching skills and pedagogy along with a qualifying language check, followed by a 100 mark Tier 2 test set on your own teaching subject for classes 6 to 10. Tier 2 decides your rank, while Tier 1 only decides whether you reach it.

Trained graduate teachers in Eklavya Model Residential Schools are hired by NESTS, which works under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. This page goes subject by subject through Tier 2, so you can see exactly what an English, Hindi, maths, science or SST aspirant has to cover.

EMRS TGT syllabus at a glance

Think of the two tiers as doing different jobs. Tier 1 checks whether you are ready to teach in a residential school at all: can you reason, use a computer, read a classroom situation and work in more than one language. Tier 2 then checks how well you know your own subject at the depth a teacher needs.

  • Tier 1: the same objective paper for every TGT subject, with five scored parts and one language check.
  • Tier 2: set separately per subject, mixing short objective items with written answers.
  • After Tier 2: document verification for those in the merit list, then posting to a school.

Principals, wardens and office posts follow other schemes, which our EMRS syllabus overview compares.

EMRS TGT tier 1 syllabus and marks

Parts IV and V together give 60 of the 100 scored marks, so teaching method and NEP knowledge carry far more weight than general awareness. Candidates were given 2 hours 30 minutes for it, as reported.

The language rule for TGT

For the latest cycle, NESTS relaxed the Hindi requirement for TGT candidates. You now need 12 marks in total from the English, Hindi and regional language items combined, rather than a separate minimum in Hindi. If you miss the aggregate, the rest of your Tier 1 is not counted.

Sources do not agree on how many marks the language test has or how much a wrong answer costs. The NESTS advertisement for your cycle settles both points, and deserves a careful read before exam day.

EMRS TGT tier 2 syllabus: the pattern

Tier 2 is one paper built around the subject you teach, carrying 100 marks and lasting about 3 hours. The scheme reported for teaching posts combines 40 objective items, a mark apiece, with 15 descriptive questions worth 60 marks. Since the written half carries more marks, being able to explain a concept clearly on paper matters as much as recall.

Your exact checklist sits in the subject annexure of the advertisement. What follows summarises those annexures as reported for the most recent exam.

EMRS TGT English syllabus

  • Reading: three or four unseen passages of about 150 to 250 words, with vocabulary and inference questions.
  • Writing: notice, message or postcard, report, article, debate or speech, and formal and informal letters.
  • Grammar and usage: tenses, modals, voice, subject and verb agreement, connectors, clauses, parts of speech, punctuation and reordering sentences.
  • Literature: Shakespeare, the Romantic poets, English and American writing of the 19th and 20th centuries, Indian writing in English and world literature in English.

The literature section is broad, so build a one page note on each period with major writers, two or three works each and their themes.

EMRS TGT Hindi syllabus

  • Prose: the growth of Hindi prose and its forms, including the novel, story, drama, essay, travelogue, memoir, biography and reportage.
  • Poetry: the Adikal, Bhaktikal, Ritikal and modern periods, with their main poets and trends.
  • Language and grammar: sounds, word formation, parts of speech, sentence structure, alankar, muhavare and lokoktiyan, unseen passages and the constitutional position of Hindi.

Descriptive questions here often ask you to compare periods or comment on a poet's style, so practise short critical notes in Hindi with examples.

Topics for the maths, science and SST papers

Mathematics

Real numbers and number theory, polynomials, linear equations and pairs of them, quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, inequalities, matrices, permutations and combinations, basic calculus, Euclidean and coordinate geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics and probability.

Science

Physics: motion and Newton's laws, gravitation, work and energy, floatation, sound, light, electric current and sources of energy. Chemistry: matter, atomic structure, periodic classification, reactions, acids and bases, metals versus non metals, compounds of carbon. Biology: cells and tissues, the diversity of living things, nutrition, respiration and transport, how organisms respond and coordinate, reproduction, heredity and evolution, the human eye, diseases, food and natural resources.

Social science

History from the French Revolution and the revolt of 1857 to the freedom struggle, the Russian Revolution and the world wars; geography of the earth and of India, including climate, soils, agriculture, industries and disasters; economics topics such as poverty, food security, sectors and money and credit; and civics on power sharing, federalism, parties, elections and the Constitution.

Computer science and regional language TGT posts have their own lists in the annexure.

Who can apply for TGT

  • A bachelor's degree, or a four year integrated degree, with at least 50 percent in the subject and in aggregate, in the subject combination set for your post.
  • B.Ed with at least 50 percent, or the integrated B.Ed and M.Ed course, from a college the NCTE recognises.
  • A pass in CTET Paper II.
  • An upper age of 35, relaxed under central government rules for reserved groups, and higher for people already in EMRS service.

For Hindi and English, the subject must have been studied in all three years of graduation. If you are still preparing for the eligibility test, see the CTET syllabus.

Dividing preparation hours across Tier 1 and Tier 2

Because Tier 1 is only a gate, put about a third of your early hours into it and the rest into your subject. Once the Tier 1 date is close, flip the ratio for three weeks, then return to the subject straight after.

Imran holds a B.Sc and B.Ed and qualified CTET Paper II last year. He reads one NEP chapter and solves twenty case based pedagogy questions every morning, and spends his evenings on class 9 and 10 science. Each Sunday he writes five descriptive answers in 45 minutes and checks them against the NCERT text.

For your subject, NCERT books of classes 6 to 10 come first, followed by a graduation level textbook for depth. To see how high the bar went last time, read the EMRS cut off analysis, and the KVS TGT syllabus is a useful comparison if you are applying to both.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EMRS syllabus TGT candidates follow the same for every subject?

Tier 1 is common to all TGT subjects. Tier 2 is different for each subject and follows the annexure for that post.

Will my Tier 1 score affect the TGT merit list?

For TGT, merit is reported to be drawn from Tier 2. Tier 1 is a screening stage, so you only need to clear it and the language test.

What do I need to pass in the language test?

In the latest cycle you need an aggregate of 12 marks across English, Hindi plus one regional tongue. A separate Hindi minimum for TGT was dropped.

Is CTET compulsory for EMRS TGT?

Yes, a pass in CTET Paper II is part of the essential qualification along with a degree and B.Ed. Check the notice for the date by which your certificate must be issued.

What age limit applies to EMRS TGT applicants?

You must not be over 35, and reserved category applicants receive the standard central government relaxation. Employees already working in EMRS get a higher limit.

How is the EMRS TGT tier 2 syllabus different from PGT?

TGT Tier 2 is pitched at classes 6 to 10, while PGT covers senior secondary and graduation level content. See the EMRS PGT syllabus for the higher level paper.
