EMRS PGT Syllabus and Exam Pattern

TeachingClasses 11 and 12Tier 2 of 100 marksUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The EMRS PGT syllabus is split across two written rounds. Round one (Tier 1) screens you on awareness, reasoning, computer skills, teaching aptitude and classroom domain knowledge, with an English and Hindi test you must clear; round two (Tier 2) is a 100 mark paper in your own PGT subject at senior secondary level. NESTS fills senior teaching posts in Eklavya schools for tribal children through this exam.

For PGT, Tier 2 is where selection is decided, so your subject depth matters most. Tier 1 still demands respect, because a weak language score means the rest of that paper is never marked.

EMRS PGT exam pattern at a glance

Selection for PGT runs through two written tiers and then document verification. Reports of the latest notice say the PGT merit list is prepared from Tier 2, while Tier 1 serves to shortlist.

EMRS PGT written tiers
TierContentMarksTime
Tier 1Five scored parts plus a qualifying language test100 (plus 20 qualifying)2 hours 30 minutes
Tier 2Subject knowledge, objective and descriptive1003 hours

Principal and non teaching posts follow different Tier 1 mixes; the overview for every post sits on the EMRS syllabus page.

EMRS PGT tier 1 syllabus

PGT screening paper, part by part
SectionWhat it coversMarks
Part 1Awareness of current and static GK10
Part 2Logical and verbal reasoning15
Part 3Computers and ICT use15
Part 4Aptitude for teaching30
Part 5Domain knowledge: learning by doing in your subject (20) and NEP ideas (10)30
Part 6English plus Hindi competency, qualifying only20

The bar in Part 6 is 40 percent. Miss it and Parts 1 to 5 go unchecked, no matter how well you did there. Unlike TGT, the PGT language part has only English and Hindi, without a regional language.

  • Teaching aptitude: purpose of teaching, how adolescents learn, motivation, teaching methods for senior classes, classroom management and evaluation.
  • Domain knowledge: project and inquiry methods for your subject, classroom scenarios with older students, and the school education chapters of the current NEP.
  • ICT: computer fundamentals, office software, internet use, digital tools for teaching and cyber hygiene.
  • Language test: for English, usage, word knowledge and a passage; for Hindi, sandhi, samas, synonyms, opposites, idioms and an unseen passage.
Negative marking applies in the objective parts, yet secondary sources quote different penalty sizes. Look for the marking clause in the NESTS notice before deciding how freely to guess.

Tier 2: the subject paper

Three hours, 100 marks: the first 40 marks come from 40 objective items, the other 60 from 15 written answers. Expect senior secondary content handled with post graduate understanding, plus some subject pedagogy.

Subjects recruited in the latest notice covered the languages (English, Hindi), the sciences, maths, the social sciences such as history, geography and economics, plus commerce and computer science. Each has its own topic list in the syllabus annexure, so download yours and plan from that list, not from a general one.

Because 60 of the 100 marks are descriptive, practise answers of four to five marks against the clock: derivations and numericals for physics and chemistry, proofs for mathematics, and short analytical answers for humanities and language subjects.

EMRS PGT Hindi syllabus

Published summaries of the Hindi PGT syllabus group it into four blocks:

  • History and literature: the Adikal, Bhaktikal, Reetikal and modern periods, and prose forms such as essay, story, novel, drama, memoir and travelogue.
  • Grammar and composition: word and sentence structure, sandhi, unseen passages, writing tasks, and kavyashastra topics such as ras, shabd shakti, chhand and alankar.
  • Writing skills and journalism: print reporting, features, interviews, scripts for radio and television, advertising and anchoring.
  • Special study of writers: works and style of poets and authors such as Amir Khusro, Kabir, Jayasi, Surdas, Tulsidas, Premchand, Mahadevi Verma and Agyeya.

The journalism block mirrors the class 11 and 12 Hindi core course, so the NCERT textbooks for those classes are a direct source.

EMRS PGT English syllabus

The English PGT paper tests the language and literature taught at the plus two stage, along with the methods of teaching them. Expect questions on grammar and usage, reading and writing skills, literary forms and devices, the major periods and writers of English literature, Indian writing in English, and approaches to teaching language. Topics and weightage are fixed by the annexure for the subject, so check it before you lean on any general list.

For descriptive answers, practise short critical notes on a poem or prose extract, and a lesson outline for a reading or writing skill.

Planning your preparation

  1. Clear the language test first in your mind: a week of English and Hindi grammar practice removes the biggest risk in Tier 1.
  2. Give teaching aptitude and domain knowledge daily time, since they make up 60 of the 100 scored Tier 1 marks.
  3. Revise your subject from NCERT books for classes 11 and 12, then from your post graduate notes for depth.
  4. From the second month, write three descriptive Tier 2 answers every day and check them against textbook explanations.
Imran, with a chemistry master's and a B.Ed, teaches at a coaching centre. He was confident about the subject but had never written long answers since college. Once Tier 1 was behind him, he spent each morning writing two 4 mark answers on electrochemistry or organic mechanisms, timing himself at six minutes each, and his practice scores on the descriptive section doubled in a month.
