EMRS syllabus: Tier 1 and Tier 2 explained

TeachingTeaching postsTribal schoolsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The EMRS syllabus is set by NESTS for the Eklavya Model Residential Schools, and it works in two written tiers: a Tier 1 screening paper on general awareness, reasoning, ICT, teaching aptitude, subject teaching knowledge and languages, and a Tier 2 paper on your own subject with both objective and descriptive questions. Principals then face an interview, and some non teaching posts take a skill test.

Each post has its own mix of parts, so a TGT, a hostel warden and a junior secretariat assistant do not sit the same Tier 1. This page explains the common structure and the main teaching posts, and points you to separate pages for TGT, PGT and hostel warden.

EMRS exam pattern: how the tiers fit together

Think of Tier 1 as a filter and Tier 2 as the real contest.

  • Tier 1: an objective paper with several parts. One part is a language competency test (LCT). It is qualifying, and a score below its minimum means the rest of your paper goes unmarked.
  • Tier 2: a subject knowledge paper for the post you applied for. For TGT and PGT, reports of the notice say merit is drawn from Tier 2 marks.
  • Tier 3: an interview of 40 marks for principals, where Tier 2 carries 80 percent of the final score and the interview 20 percent. JSA candidates take a typing skill test that is qualifying.

After that come document verification and posting to a school, often in a tribal district far from home, which is worth thinking about before you apply.

EMRS tier 1 syllabus for TGT and PGT

For teachers, Tier 1 has six parts. Parts I to V make up 100 marks; Part VI, the language test, is assessed separately.

Tier 1 for teachers in the latest recruitment
PartAreaMarks
IGeneral Awareness10
IIReasoning Ability15
IIIKnowledge of ICT15
IVTeaching Aptitude30
VDomain knowledge: activity and case based pedagogy (20) and the National Education Policy (10)30
VILanguage Competency Test (qualifying)TGT 30, PGT 20

Time reported for this paper is 2 hours 30 minutes. For TGT the language part has English, Hindi and a regional language at 10 marks each, and you need 12 out of 30. For PGT it has English and Hindi, and you need 40 percent.

  • General awareness: current events, static GK and topics around tribal welfare and education schemes.
  • Reasoning: series, analogies, directions, blood relations, arrangements, syllogisms and Venn diagrams.
  • ICT: computer basics, operating systems, office tools, internet, networking, cyber safety and shortcuts.
  • Teaching aptitude: nature and aims of teaching, learner characteristics, factors affecting learning, methods and aids, and evaluation.
  • Domain knowledge: experiential and activity based teaching in your subject, case situations from the classroom, and the main ideas of the current National Education Policy (NEP).
Negative marking applies in Tier 1, but reports differ on whether a wrong answer costs one fourth or one third of a mark. Read the marking clause in your notice before you decide how much to guess.

EMRS tier 2 exam pattern

Tier 2, which many aspirants call the EMRS mains, is a subject knowledge paper. For teachers it is set on the subject you applied for, at the level of the class you would teach.

Tier 2 structure reported for teaching posts
Paper sectionQuestionsMarks
Objective, subject based4040
Descriptive, subject based1560
Tier 2 total (3 hours)55100

The descriptive half carries more weight, so practise writing short, clear answers: definitions with examples, derivations or proofs for science and maths, and explanation of texts or concepts for language and social science. The EMRS mains syllabus for each subject is given in the annexure of the notice; use that as your checklist rather than any generic list.

Principal and non teaching posts

The principal's Tier 1 has five parts for 100 marks in 2 hours: reasoning and numerical ability (10), general awareness (10), academics and residential aspects (30), administration and finance (30) and a language test in English and Hindi (20). Tier 2 tests academic and residential management and administration and finance with objective and descriptive questions, followed by the interview.

Non teaching Tier 1 papers lean on quantitative aptitude, reasoning, ICT and languages instead of teaching aptitude.

  • Hostel warden and female staff nurse: general awareness, reasoning, ICT, quantitative aptitude (30) and a three language test. See the EMRS hostel warden syllabus.
  • Accountant: a higher share of reasoning and ICT, with quantitative aptitude of 30 marks.
  • JSA and lab attendant: reasoning, quantitative aptitude, awareness, basic computers and English and Hindi tests. JSA candidates also face a typing test.

All of these move to a subject based Tier 2.

What to focus on

In Tier 1, teaching aptitude and domain knowledge together give 60 of 100 marks. A teacher who knows classroom methods, child development and NEP well has a big head start. The language part decides whether you get marked at all, so do not ignore the regional language if you are a TGT candidate.

  • Read the NEP document itself, at least the school education chapters.
  • Practise case based questions: a student who is struggling, a mixed ability class, a hostel situation.
  • Keep ICT practical. Know common shortcuts, file types and basic network terms.
  • For Tier 2, revise your subject from NCERT textbooks of the classes you would teach, then practise 10 mark style answers in a fixed time.
Anita teaches science at a private school and wants an EMRS TGT post. She has three months before Tier 1. She studies NEP and teaching aptitude for 45 minutes on weekdays, practises 20 reasoning questions at lunch, and on weekends solves a full Tier 1 practice paper including the Hindi and regional language parts. Once Tier 1 is over, she moves fully to class 6 to 10 science and writes two descriptive answers a day.

No. Tier 1 parts and marks vary by post, and Tier 2 is subject or post specific. Download the syllabus annexure for your own post from the official NESTS website.
