The airforce y group syllabus today means the Agniveervayu online test for candidates from streams other than science: one 50 question paper with 20 English questions and 30 on reasoning and general awareness (RAGA), done in 45 minutes. The English part follows the Class 12 CBSE level, and every wrong answer takes away a quarter mark.
People still search for the air force y group syllabus or simply airforce ka syllabus, using the old name for non technical airmen trades, but recruitment now runs under the Agnipath scheme as Agniveervayu. This page gives you the test pattern, the topic list for both sections, the physical test, a plan and a short Hindi summary.

From Y group to Agniveervayu
Before the Agnipath scheme, the Air Force recruited airmen in two broad groups. X group meant technical trades for science students, and Y group meant non technical trades open to students of any stream. Today both enter as Agniveervayu for a four year engagement, and the notification uses the words "science subjects" and "other than science subjects" instead of X and Y.
Selection has three phases:
- Phase I: an online test in a city picked on your form.
- Phase II: physical fitness test (PFT) and Adaptability Tests I and II at an Airmen Selection Centre.
- Phase III: medical examination.
Airforce exam pattern for other than science
| Section | Questions | Marks | Section time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 20 | 20 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning and general awareness (RAGA) | 30 | 30 | 25 minutes |
| Total | 50 | 50 | 45 minutes |
A right answer earns 1 mark, a wrong one loses 0.25, and a skipped one scores zero. Sections open one after the other and each is timed on its own: once English closes you move to RAGA and cannot return. The submit button stays disabled for the first five minutes of each section.
If you studied Physics and Maths and chose both streams while registering, you sit a single combined paper of 100 questions in 85 minutes, adding 25 Physics and 25 Maths questions to the same English and RAGA sections. For that longer paper, read our X group guide.
Airforce Y group English syllabus
The air force y group english syllabus is set at the Class 12 CBSE standard. Topics seen in recent papers and model papers:
- Grammar: tenses, prepositions, articles and determiners, adjectives and adverbs, subject verb agreement, spotting the error
- Vocabulary: antonyms and synonyms, idioms, phrase meanings, single word replacements, spelling checks
- Sentence work: blanks to fill, finishing a sentence, putting jumbled parts in order, voice change, narration change
- Passages: cloze test, paragraph completion and a short reading comprehension
With 20 questions in 20 minutes, you have exactly a minute each. Grammar items take seconds if your rules are clear, which leaves time for the passage.
Reasoning and general awareness topics
RAGA mixes verbal and non verbal reasoning with general knowledge. Expect a blend roughly like this, although the split between reasoning and GK is not fixed in the notification.
Reasoning
- Analogies, odd item classification, series of letters or numbers
- Codes, family relation puzzles, directions and order ranking
- Syllogism, statements and conclusions, seating and simple puzzles
- Non verbal items: mirror images, figure completion, folded paper and hidden shapes
- Basic numerical ability: percentages, averages, ratio problems, simple or compound interest, time taken on work, buying and selling with profit or loss
General awareness
- School level history of India, map based geography, Constitution and polity basics
- General science of daily life, the solar system, inventions and discoveries
- Countries, capitals and currencies, Indian states, important days
- Awards, sports terms, books and authors
- Defence basics: Air Force ranks, commands, aircraft and exercises, plus news from the past twelve months or so
Physical fitness test and eligibility at a glance
| Event | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km run | 7 minutes | 8 minutes |
| Push ups | 10 in 1 minute | Not required |
| Sit ups | 10 in 1 minute | 10 in 1 minute 30 seconds |
| Squats | 20 in 1 minute | 15 in 1 minute |
Both men and women must stand at least 152 cm, though candidates from certain regions get relaxation. For the other than science entry you need Class 12 in any stream, or a two year vocational course, with at least 50% in aggregate and 50% in English. Percentages are not rounded up, so 49.99% counts as 49%.
The age window is fixed as a date of birth range for each intake, and some intakes have seen a corrigendum. Treat the advertisement for your intake as final on age, PFT and height.
A ten week plan built on the 20 plus 30 split
RAGA carries 30 of the 50 marks, so it deserves more of your week, but English is the section where steady students lose easy marks through careless grammar.
- Weeks 1 to 3: grammar rules daily (tenses, prepositions, articles), 30 vocabulary words a day, and one reasoning chapter every two days.
- Weeks 4 to 6: arithmetic basics for RAGA, static GK notes, defence facts, and two cloze passages a day.
- Weeks 7 to 10: complete 45 minute mocks with the section timers on, four a week, plus a timed 1.6 km run three mornings a week.
Imran passed Class 12 in commerce with 58% and 64% in English. His mocks showed he was attempting every RAGA question and losing nearly 2 marks to wrong guesses. He began leaving items he could not narrow down, and his total after deductions rose by 3 marks within two weeks.
Books and official sources
Your Class 11 and 12 English textbooks plus one standard grammar book cover the English section. For reasoning, a general mental ability practice book is enough, and NCERT Class 6 to 10 social science books give you the static GK base. The official Agniveervayu portal posts the notification, a model paper and a mock test, and the mock is the closest thing to the real screen you will see. If you are weighing other forces, look at the Army Agniveer syllabus and every other forces test listed at our defence and police section.
Frequently asked questions
Is Y group still there in the Air Force?
The term is no longer used in the notification. Non technical airmen now join as Agniveervayu under the other than science subjects option, which is what the old Y group covered.
Do airmen test papers deduct for an incorrect pick?
It does. A wrong response loses 0.25 mark, and a correct one adds 1 mark. Blank questions score zero, which makes a blind stab at RAGA a poor bet, while a half sure English answer is usually worth marking.
Can a science student apply for the other than science paper?
Yes. A candidate eligible for the science entry may also choose the other than science option while registering. You then take the combined 100 question paper that includes Physics and Maths.
What level is the airforce English syllabus?
It follows the Class 12 CBSE English standard. Grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction and short passages make up the 20 questions.
Which stream can take the test in the syllabus of airforce y group?
Any stream, including arts and commerce. You need Class 12 or a two year vocational course with at least 50% in aggregate and 50% in English.
What happens after the online test?
Shortlisted candidates go to an Airmen Selection Centre for the physical fitness test and two adaptability tests, then a medical board. Merit is prepared only once every phase is over.
