The airforce x group syllabus now belongs to the Agniveervayu science subjects test, which checks Physics, Mathematics and English, all pitched at the senior secondary CBSE standard, in one online paper of 70 questions. Each right answer gets 1 mark, each wrong one loses 0.25, and you have 60 minutes in all, split section by section.
X group was the old label for technical airmen trades open to science students. Since the Agnipath scheme, the notification calls it the science subjects stream, but the syllabus of airforce x group has stayed close to what it always was: the Physics and Maths you studied in Classes 11 and 12, plus English grammar and usage. Below you will find the airforce x group exam pattern, a chapter list for each subject, the later phases and a short Hindi version.

Selection phases for the science stream
Every Agniveervayu intake follows the same three phase route, and only Phase I is a written test.
- Phase I: online objective test at a centre in the city you choose while registering.
- Phase II: held at an Airmen Selection Centre, it combines the fitness run and exercises, Adaptability Tests I and II, and a check of your documents.
- Phase III: a medical board, only for candidates cleared in Phase II.
Under the Agnipath scheme, you join for a four year engagement as an Agniveervayu, after which a share of each batch may be offered regular service as per the policy in force.
Airforce X group exam pattern
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Section time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 25 | 25 | 20 minutes |
| Mathematics | 25 | 25 | 20 minutes |
| English | 20 | 20 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 70 | 70 | 60 minutes |
Sections open in a fixed order. When one section's clock runs out, the next opens, and you cannot go back. Earlier intakes also kept the submit button inactive during the opening five minutes of every block.
If you register for both streams, the test gains a Reasoning and General Awareness (RAGA) block with 30 questions in 25 minutes, making it 100 questions in 85 minutes. The RAGA topics are listed in detail in our separate Y group guide.
Exam instruction sheets for some intakes have listed RAGA inside the science paper too. Read the instructions released with your intake's admit card, since that sheet governs your test day.
Physics topics from Classes 11 and 12
The physics section uses the CBSE Class 11 and 12 syllabus. Expect concept questions, short numericals and graph reading.
Class 11
- Measurement: SI units, dimensional checks, error estimates
- Straight line and two dimensional kinematics, projectile paths, relative velocity
- Laws of motion, friction and uniform circular motion
- Work and energy theorem, power, elastic and inelastic collisions
- Rotation: centre of mass, torque, moment of inertia, rolling
- Gravitation, orbital speed of satellites, escape speed
- Matter in bulk: stress and strain, Pascal and Bernoulli principles, drag in liquids, capillary rise
- Thermal physics: expansion, calorimetry, laws of thermodynamics, behaviour of ideal gases
- SHM, pendulums, wave speed, standing waves and beats
Class 12
- Charges, fields, potential, capacitors; circuits with Ohm's law and Kirchhoff's rules
- Fields due to currents, magnetic materials, Faraday's induction, AC circuits and transformers
- The EM spectrum and its uses
- Mirrors, lenses, prisms, microscopes, telescopes; interference and diffraction
- Photons and matter waves, hydrogen spectrum, decay laws, mass defect
- Diodes, rectifiers and the basics of semiconductors
Mathematics topics
Maths often decides the merit for science candidates because questions can be long. The chapter list follows Classes 11 and 12:
- Algebra: function types, the argand plane, nature of roots, progressions, counting with permutations, the binomial expansion, induction, matrix operations and determinants, inequalities
- Trigonometry: identities, general solutions of equations, inverse trigonometric functions, height and distance problems
- Coordinate geometry: slope and line equations, circle equations, parabola and its two cousins (ellipse, hyperbola), and 3D direction cosines
- Calculus: evaluating limits, checking continuity, derivatives with maxima, minima and tangents, integration by standard methods, areas between curves, first order differential equations
- Vectors, statistics, probability and simple linear programming problems
Reports from recent shifts mention matrices, calculus, probability, trigonometry, permutations, binomial theorem and complex numbers turning up again and again, so give these chapters an early start.
English section syllabus
The English paper is the same for both streams and is pitched at Class 12 CBSE level. It is also the only paper set in English alone, while the others come in Hindi and English.
- Reading: a short passage, cloze test, completing a paragraph
- Grammar: verb forms and tense use, the right article or preposition, agreement between subject and verb, pronoun and conjunction errors
- Changes of form: active to passive, direct to indirect speech
- Vocabulary: word meanings and their opposites, everyday idioms, replacing a phrase by one word, spelling traps
- Sentence order and sentence completion
English needs 50% separately in your Class 12 marks as well, so it is both an eligibility filter and a scoring section.
After the test: PFT and eligibility
| Event | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km run | Within 7 minutes | Within 8 minutes |
| Push ups | 10 in a minute | Not part of the test |
| Sit ups | 10 in a minute | 10 in 90 seconds |
| Squats | 20 in a minute | 15 in a minute |
For the science stream you need Class 12 with Mathematics, Physics and English, scoring at least 50% overall and 50% in English. A three year engineering diploma in listed branches, or a vocational programme of two years that kept Physics and Maths as regular subjects, also qualifies under the same 50% rules. The latest intake fixed a date of birth window and an upper limit of 22 years on enrolment, and the minimum height is around 152 cm with relaxation for some regions.
Age windows, height rules and PFT timings are set intake by intake. Treat the notice for your own intake as final.
Twelve weeks to the online test
With 50 of the 70 marks in Physics and Maths, your science chapters carry the paper, but English is where steady marks hide.
- Weeks 1 to 4: Class 11 physics and algebra, one chapter of each every two days, with 25 short questions per chapter.
- Weeks 5 to 8: Class 12 electricity, optics, modern physics, calculus and coordinate geometry, plus 20 minutes of English grammar daily.
- Weeks 9 to 12: sit a complete 60 minute practice paper thrice weekly with the block timers on, and morning runs to build toward 1.6 km in 7 minutes.
Rohit, from a CBSE school in Jaipur, kept finishing the Maths block with questions untouched of his mocks. He began giving each question one quick look, solving the easy ones first and marking the long integrals for a second pass. In three weeks his Maths attempts went from 15 to 21 without any rise in errors.

Frequently asked questions
Is X group the same as Agniveervayu science?
Yes. The old X group label covered technical trades for science students. Under the Agnipath scheme the same entry is called Agniveervayu science subjects, and the test content is still Physics, Maths and English.
What is the question count for the science paper?
Recent intakes have 70 questions: 25 Physics, 25 Maths and 20 English, done in 60 minutes. Opting for both streams adds 30 RAGA questions and stretches the paper to 85 minutes.
Are marks deducted for incorrect X group answers?
Yes. Each incorrect pick costs 0.25 and leaving it blank costs nothing. Guessing among four options without narrowing them down usually loses marks over a full paper.
Can I apply with a diploma instead of Class 12?
Yes, a three year engineering diploma in listed branches qualifies, and so does vocational schooling of two years in which physics and maths were studied, each with 50% overall and 50% in English. Check the branch list in your intake notice.
Is the X group paper available in Hindi?
You can read Physics and Maths items in Hindi or English. The English section is set only in English.
What comes after the online test?
If your Phase I score earns a call letter, you report to a selection centre for fitness events, two adaptability tests and paperwork. Passing all of that leads to the medical board.
