Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET): Who Is Eligible

TeachingD.El.Ed: Paper 1B.Ed: Paper 2Updated 26 Oct 2026

To sit the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET), you need a graduate degree plus a recognised teacher training course, and the course decides which paper you can take: a two-year D.El.Ed or BTC opens Paper 1 for Classes 1 to 5, while a B.Ed, or a four-year integrated teaching degree after Class 12, opens Paper 2 for Classes 6 to 8. Students in the final year of these courses can also apply.

This page sets out each route, the marks it needs, whether a B.Ed counts for primary classes, and what to keep ready when you fill the form. For the papers themselves, see the UPTET syllabus and exam pattern.

Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) eligibility in brief

UPTET is the state's teacher eligibility test. A pass is not an appointment; it makes you eligible to apply when the state recruits assistant teachers for its basic education schools. Because of that, the rules focus on one thing: whether your teacher training matches the level of classes you want to teach.

  • Paper 1 is for primary teachers (Classes 1 to 5).
  • Paper 2 is for upper primary teachers (Classes 6 to 8).
  • If you meet the rules for both, you can sit both papers in their separate shifts.

The test is not limited to people from Uttar Pradesh. In the latest cycle, reports counted more than two lakh registered candidates from other states among about 19.9 lakh in total.

Qualifications for Paper 1 (primary level)

Any one of these routes, as listed in recent notifications and reports, makes you eligible for Paper 1:

UPTET Paper 1 qualification routes
DegreeTeacher trainingFinal year allowed
Graduation from a recognised universityTwo-year D.El.Ed (BTC)Yes
GraduationTwo-year BTC through distance mode for untrained contract teachers of council schoolsYes
GraduationSpecial BTC or two-year D.Ed (special education)Yes
GraduationBTC (Urdu) and other equivalents named in the notificationCheck notification

Some older lists also include Class 12 with 50% marks plus a four-year B.El.Ed for Paper 1. Whether that route is open in a given cycle is set by the notification, so read the qualification table there line by line.

Can B.Ed holders take Paper 1?

This is the question asked most often, and the answer has changed over the years. Earlier cycles allowed graduates with a B.Ed to appear for Paper 1. A Supreme Court ruling later held that a B.Ed is not a valid qualification for primary teacher posts, and the qualification lists in recent UPTET reports for Classes 1 to 5 do not include B.Ed.

Aman finished his B.A. and a B.Ed and wanted to teach Class 3. When he read the latest list, B.Ed appeared only under Paper 2. He sat Paper 2 with social studies and is now weighing a D.El.Ed if he still wants primary teaching later.

So a candidate whose only training is a B.Ed should prepare for the upper primary paper. If a later notification changes this, follow the notification.

Qualifications for Paper 2 (upper primary level)

UPTET Paper 2 qualification routes
Base qualificationTeacher training
GraduationTwo-year D.El.Ed (BTC)
Graduation or postgraduation with at least 50%B.Ed, passed or in the final year
Graduation or postgraduation with at least 45%B.Ed obtained under the NCTE rules in force at the time
Class 12 with at least 50%Four-year B.El.Ed
Class 12 with at least 50%Four-year B.A.Ed or B.Sc.Ed

Paper 2 also asks you to pick a 60-mark subject block, which is mathematics plus science for some and social science for others. Your degree subjects do not lock you into one option, but choose the one you studied longer; it is worth 60 of the 150 marks.

Age, attempts and certificate validity

Teacher eligibility tests generally do not cap age, because the age limit is applied later at the recruitment stage. Reports on the latest UPTET give a minimum age of 18 and no upper limit, but read the age clause in the official notification before you count on it.

  • Attempts: no fixed limit has been reported. You can sit again to raise your score.
  • Validity: recent reports describe the UPTET certificate as valid for life, following the national rule for TET certificates.
  • Qualifying marks: 60% (90 of 150) for general candidates and 55% (about 82 marks) for reserved categories. In the latest cycle about 80% of Paper 1 candidates and about 72% of Paper 2 candidates qualified.

How to apply and documents to keep ready

  1. Complete One Time Registration on the UPESSC website. Recent reports say it is compulsory before the UPTET form.
  2. Fill the application for Paper 1, Paper 2 or both, and pay the fee per paper. Fees have differed between reports, so pay the amount shown on the portal.
  3. Upload a recent photograph and signature in the format the portal asks for.

Keep these documents ready, because they are checked at the recruitment stage even if not at the test:

  • Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates
  • Graduation (and postgraduation, if used) mark sheets
  • D.El.Ed, BTC, B.Ed or integrated course mark sheet, or a final year enrolment proof
  • Category, disability or other reservation certificates
  • A photo identity card
Fees, age rules and the exact list of training courses come from the notification of each cycle. Treat this page as a guide and the UPESSC notification as the final word.

What to do after you clear UPTET

A UPTET certificate lets you apply for assistant teacher recruitment in the state's council schools, which is held through a separate written exam. For primary posts that is the UP Super TET. If you also want central school jobs, the CTET eligibility rules are similar, and many candidates hold both certificates. The teaching exams section lists the other state TETs too.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET)?

Graduates with a two-year D.El.Ed or BTC can take Paper 1, and graduates with a B.Ed (or Class 12 pass students with a four-year integrated teaching degree) can take Paper 2. Final year students of these courses can usually apply. Marks rules of 45% or 50% apply to some routes.

Can I apply for UPTET from another state?

Yes. The test is open to candidates from outside Uttar Pradesh, and lakhs of them registered in the latest cycle. How reservation applies to candidates from other states is set by state rules, so read that clause in the notification.

Does UPTET have an upper age limit?

No upper limit appeared in news of the most recent UPTET, only a minimum age of 18. Eligibility tests usually leave age limits to the recruitment stage, but check the age clause of the notice for your cycle.

Can a final year B.Ed student fill the UPTET form?

Yes, the Paper 2 route for graduates with 50% marks is open to those still studying in the last year of their B.Ed. You must have passed by the time of recruitment.

Is there a limit on UPTET attempts?

No attempt limit has been reported. Because the certificate is described as valid for life, many people sit again only to improve their score.

What is the UPTET pass mark?

You need 90 out of 150 if you are in the general category and 55% if you belong to a reserved category. The certificate shows your marks, which can matter in later recruitment.
