A TET previous year question paper is useful whichever teacher eligibility test you take, because CTET, UPTET and most state TETs follow one national design: 150 one mark questions in each paper, with pedagogy woven through every section. Solve a few and you learn the test's voice, which matters more here than in most exams.
This guide focuses on how to read and practise with these papers, especially if you are preparing for UP TET, and on where to find genuine question booklets and answer keys.

A quick look at the paper you are practising
Before you pick up an old paper, keep the layout in mind. Both papers give 30 marks to child development and pedagogy and 30 to each of two languages. The primary paper then has 30 maths and 30 EVS questions. The upper primary paper swaps them for one 60 mark block, chosen as maths with science or as social studies. Neither CTET nor UPTET subtracts marks for an incorrect choice, so attempt every question when you practise.
Every topic appears on our TET syllabus page, and the UP specific version is on the UPTET syllabus page.
What past TET papers reveal
- Pedagogy is everywhere. Even the maths, EVS and language sections include questions on how to teach, not just what to teach. Expect a good part of each subject block to be method based.
- Child centred options tend to win. Options that favour rote learning, punishment or comparing children tend to be wrong.
- Language passages are simple; their questions are not. Questions turn on inference and on grammar inside the passage.
- Content is school level. Maths and EVS facts rarely go beyond class 8 textbooks, but the questions ask you to apply them in a classroom setting.
- UPTET papers lean on Hindi. Language I is Hindi, and grammar points like sandhi, samas and muhavare appear regularly.
These patterns come from reading past papers; boards do not publish a fixed topic weightage.
Getting the most from each TET previous year question paper
- Do one paper untimed and mark every pedagogy question you got wrong. Read the reason behind each correct option.
- Group your errors: theory names (Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg), inclusive education, assessment, language teaching, maths teaching.
- Rebuild those themes from NCERT's teacher oriented ideas, then try a second paper under the full 150 minute limit.
- Score yourself block by block. With a pass line of 90 for general candidates, you need to know which block is pulling you down.
- Mix tests: an old UPTET one week, an old CTET the next. The questions differ in flavour but test the same framework.
Rahul, a D.El.Ed student in Kanpur, kept scoring well in maths and EVS but around 15 in CDP. After two weeks of reading each pedagogy explanation from his practice papers and keeping a one page sheet of key ideas, his CDP score settled at 22 and his totals crossed 95.
Five practice questions of our own
Our own items below copy the tone of TET papers, not their content.
- A class 3 child writes 'the cat sat on the mat' as 'the kat sat on the mat'. The most suitable response from the teacher is to: mark it wrong and ask for ten corrections; ignore it completely; treat it as a sign of the child's thinking about sounds and guide gently; compare the child with others.
- In Piaget's theory, a child who understands that pouring water into a taller glass does not change its amount has reached which ability? Egocentrism; conservation; animism; object permanence.
- Which is the best way to introduce fractions in class 3? Rules for adding fractions; dividing a roti or paper shapes into equal parts; a timed worksheet; memorising tables.
- An EVS teacher takes children to a nearby pond to observe living things. This mainly supports: learning from the local environment; preparing for tests; keeping children busy; covering the syllabus faster.
- What is 3/4 of 120 added to 2/5 of 50? Choices: 100, 110, 120, 90.
Answers: the third option (seeing errors as clues); conservation; dividing real objects into equal parts; learning from the local environment; 110.
Official places to look
For CTET, the official website ctet.nic.in posts provisional answer keys and the challenge window after each sitting, along with notices. For UPTET and other state TETs, use the website of the body that conducted that sitting. In Uttar Pradesh the test has moved to the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission, so newer material will appear on the commission's site, while older keys were released by the earlier conducting authority.
Copies circulating online sometimes mix papers from different years or carry wrong keys. When an answer looks doubtful, check it against the final answer key published by the conducting body.
UP TET previous year paper and what to pair it with
An up tet previous year paper gives the truest picture of the next UPTET, and the recent July sitting by UPESSC is now the freshest guide to the commission's style. Recent CTET papers make good extra practice too. Our CTET previous papers guide covers those. Planning to sit the recruitment exam once you qualify? Frequently asked questions
Is a CTET paper useful for UPTET practice, and is any tet exam previous year question paper interchangeable?
Yes. Both follow the same national design and test the same pedagogy ideas. Since Hindi is compulsory as the first language in UPTET, add regular Hindi grammar work.
How many TET previous year papers should I solve?
Work through around nine or ten complete papers, alternating UPTET and CTET, and review each one carefully. Reading explanations for pedagogy questions is where most of the gain comes from.
Are TET previous year papers available in Hindi?
UPTET papers are bilingual in the non language sections, and CTET offers Hindi and English for the same sections. Practise in whichever medium you plan to mark on your exam form.
When was the last UP TET held?
The latest UPTET was held from 2 to 4 July by UPESSC, its first sitting since January 2022, with results declared in August. A special TET for in-service teachers has also been announced, so check the commission's website for the next dates.
Do questions repeat in TET exams?
Identical questions turn up only now and then, but ideas such as Piaget's stages, the zone of proximal development, inclusive classrooms and continuous assessment keep returning in new wording.
Should I time myself on old TET papers?
Yes, after the first one or two. The paper allows 150 minutes for 150 questions, and reading long pedagogy options can slow you down if you have not practised.
