RRB technician eligibility depends on the grade: Technician Grade I Signal is open to candidates aged 18 to 33 with a B.Sc in a listed science subject or an engineering diploma or degree, while Technician Grade III is open to candidates aged 18 to 30 who have passed 10th and hold an ITI certificate or a course completed Act Apprenticeship in the related trade.
Reserved categories, ex-servicemen, PwBD candidates and serving railway staff get extra years. This page sets out each rule from the newest technician CEN (Centralised Employment Notice), so you can tick every box before paying the fee.

RRB technician eligibility starts with nationality
Indian citizens can apply, and so can people who belong to one of the other groups the CEN lists in its nationality clause (such as subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, and certain people of Indian origin who have migrated to settle in India). Candidates in those other groups need an eligibility certificate from the Government of India before appointment.
Most applicants are Indian citizens and need nothing extra here, but read the clause once if your case is unusual. Your name and date of birth must match your 10th certificate, because RRB uses that document as the only proof of age.
RRB technician grade 1 qualification eligibility
Railway technician eligibility for Grade I Signal, a Pay Level 5 post, rests on your science or engineering stream. You need one of these, completed by the closing date of applications:
- A B.Sc in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology or Instrumentation, or
- A B.Sc with a combination of sub-streams of these subjects, or
- A three year diploma in engineering, or a BE or BTech degree, in the basic streams of the above, or a combination of them.
A B.Sc in chemistry, botany or zoology alone does not qualify. If your degree mixes subjects, compare the exact stream wording in Annexure A of the CEN with your marksheet before applying.
RRB technician grade 3 qualification eligibility, trade by trade
Grade III is a Pay Level 2 post spread across more than twenty trades, from fitter, welder and electrical to carriage and wagon, track machine and refrigeration and air conditioning. The rule for almost all of them is:
- Matriculation or SSLC pass, plus
- An ITI certificate from an NCVT or SCVT recognised institute in the trade mapped to that post, or a course completed Act Apprenticeship in that trade.
For the Signal and Telecom (S&T) trade, reports on the notification also allow 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics; confirm this against Annexure A. Two points trip many applicants:
- For Level 2 posts, a diploma or degree in engineering cannot replace the ITI or apprenticeship unless the post says so.
- A graduate apprenticeship does not count as a course completed Act Apprenticeship.
Age limits and relaxation
The age is counted on 1 July of the recruitment year shown in the CEN. Grade I Signal allows 18 to 33 and Grade III allows 18 to 30 for UR and EWS candidates. Upper age relaxation:
| Category | Extra years or limit |
|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| OBC (non creamy layer) | 3 years |
| Ex-servicemen | 3 (UR, EWS), 6 (OBC) or 8 (SC, ST) years after deducting service |
| PwBD | 10 (UR, EWS), 13 (OBC) or 15 (SC, ST) years |
| Serving railway Group C or erstwhile Group D staff with 3 years' service | Up to 40 (UR, EWS), 43 (OBC) or 45 (SC, ST) |
| Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women not remarried | Up to 35 (UR, EWS), 38 (OBC) or 40 (SC, ST) |
| Course completed Act Apprentices (Grade III only) | Years of apprenticeship, up to 3 years |
Only the single largest relaxation you qualify for is given; they do not add up. SC, ST and OBC candidates who apply against unreserved vacancies get no age relaxation.
Students awaiting results, and attempts
You must hold the qualification on the closing date. Candidates still waiting for their final results are not eligible, even if they expect to pass. If your certificate is dated after the closing date, carry the marksheet that shows the date the result was declared.
RRB does not set a fixed number of attempts for technician posts. As long as you are inside the age band for your category, you may apply in every cycle.
Medical standards by trade
Each trade carries one medical category, mostly about eyesight:
- A-3 (for example Track Machine): distance vision 6/9 with or without glasses, lens power up to 2D, plus colour, binocular, night and mesopic vision tests. Candidates who had LASIK or similar surgery are not eligible for A-3 posts.
- B-1 (Grade I Signal and many Grade III field trades): 6/9 and 6/12 with or without glasses, lens power up to 4D, plus colour and night vision.
- B-2 (for example Crane Driver): similar vision, binocular test only.
- C-1 (most workshop trades): 6/12 and 6/18 with or without glasses.
If you have weak colour vision, choose a C-1 trade, because failing the medical after clearing the CBT costs you the seat.
Documents to carry for verification
Keep these originals ready, with self attested copies:
- 10th certificate (age and name proof)
- ITI, apprenticeship, diploma or degree certificates and marksheets
- Caste certificate for SC or ST, OBC non creamy layer certificate with self declaration, EWS income and asset certificate, in the formats attached to the CEN
- Disability certificate with UDID, if claiming PwBD
- Ex-servicemen papers, and an NOC from your employer if you work in a government office or PSU
Certificates in formats other than those annexed to the CEN are a common reason for rejection, so match the format before the DV date.
Quick self check before you apply
Run through this list for the grade you want:
- Is my age, counted on the CEN date, within 18 to 33 (Grade I) or 18 to 30 (Grade III), after my category's relaxation?
- Does my B.Sc or diploma stream, or my ITI trade, match the post exactly?
- Do I hold the final certificate or marksheet before the closing date?
- Can I meet the eyesight standard of the trade?
If you answer yes to all four, move on to the RRB technician syllabus and the past cut offs. To compare age and qualification rules across exams, try our eligibility checker.
Frequently asked questions
What is the qualification for RRB technician grade 3?
You need 10th pass plus an ITI certificate from an NCVT or SCVT institute, or a course completed Act Apprenticeship, in the trade linked to the post. For the S&T trade, 10+2 with Physics and Maths is also reported as accepted; confirm it in Annexure A of the CEN.
Can a diploma holder apply for technician grade 3?
Not on the strength of the diploma alone. For Level 2 posts the CEN says a diploma or degree does not replace the ITI or apprenticeship. A diploma in a listed engineering stream does qualify you for Grade I Signal.
How old can I be for RRB technician grade 1 signal?
For UR and EWS it is 18 to 33 years on the reference date in the CEN. OBC gets 3 more years and SC or ST 5 more.
Can final year students apply?
No. RRB requires the qualification to be complete by the closing date, and candidates awaiting results are not eligible.
Is there a height or physical test?
There is no physical efficiency test for technician posts. You must pass the medical examination for your trade, which mainly checks eyesight.
Does B.Sc chemistry make me eligible for Grade I Signal?
Not by itself. The listed subjects are Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT and Instrumentation, or combinations of their sub-streams. Check your degree against the CEN wording.
