The RRB technician grade 3 cut off is not one number for India: each Railway Recruitment Board releases its own cut off for each trade and community, based on normalised CBT marks out of 100. In the CEN 02/2024 cycle, popular Grade III trades at some RRBs closed near 90 for UR, while thinly contested trades closed below 50.
Below are official figures we could confirm from RRB notices, how the Grade 1 Signal cut off compares, how the qualifying percentage differs from the selection cut off, and how to read your own RRB's list.

What the RRB technician grade 3 cut off means
After the CBT, RRB converts every candidate's raw score into a normalised score so that shifts of different difficulty can be compared. Then, for each RRB, it lines up candidates trade by trade and category by category, and calls exactly as many people to document verification as there are vacancies (a 1:1 ratio). The normalised score of the last person called is the cut off.
That is why the same score can be safe in one trade and short in another. A trade with 500 posts at a large RRB will go deeper down the merit list than a trade with 3 posts at a small one.
RRB technician grade 1 previous year cut off (CEN 02/2024)
These figures come from the official RRB notices of the CEN 02/2024 cycle (CBT held in late December 2024, results declared in March 2025). Values are rounded to two decimals.
| Unreserved | SC | ST | OBC | EWS | Ex-servicemen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 68.10 | 58.09 | 48.08 | 63.61 | 63.80 | 50.90 |
| Unreserved | SC | ST | OBC | EWS | Ex-servicemen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 61.29 | 54.57 | 47.34 | 59.50 | 54.01 | 37.03 |
Grade I Signal cut offs sit well below the busiest Grade III trades because the paper is harder (35 engineering and 20 computer questions) and fewer people qualify for it.
Past Grade 3 cut off by trade, CEN 02/2024
RRB Chandigarh's official list for the same cycle shows how widely the RRB technician grade 3 cut off zone wise and trade wise can swing inside one board:
| Trade | Unreserved | SC | ST | OBC | EWS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMU | 81.87 | 78.16 | 55.09 | 77.90 | 70.33 |
| S&T | 90.18 | See the official PDF | |||
| Blacksmith | 49.37 | See the official PDF | |||
Other RRBs show the same pattern in their own lists: field trades such as S&T, EMU and electrical with many applicants close in the 80s and 90s for UR, while workshop trades like blacksmith, millwright and trimmer can close in the 40s to 60s. Read your own RRB's PDF rather than assuming one board's numbers apply to another.
Passing mark and selection cut off are not the same
Two very different numbers get mixed up:
- Minimum qualifying marks are fixed in the CEN: 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC (NCL) and SC, 25% for ST. PwBD candidates may get up to 2 marks of relaxation if posts would otherwise stay vacant. Scoring below these means you cannot be selected at all.
- The cut off is the mark of whoever fills the final vacancy slot in your list. It is almost always far above the qualifying mark in popular trades.
So 45 marks qualifies a UR candidate on paper, but in the CEN 02/2024 cycle that would have been enough only in a few low demand trades.
How to read the RRB technician grade 1 cut off zone wise
Each RRB's cut off PDF uses a category number (CAT No.) for each post. Grade I Signal is usually CAT 1 and each Grade III trade has its own number, matching the numbering used in the notification's table of posts. Rows are split by railway zone or production unit (for example NWR and WCR under one RRB), so find:
- Your board, as chosen in the application.
- Your CAT number and railway.
- The column for your community, or for PwBD or ex-servicemen if you applied under those.
Columns like R-LD or B-VI are PwBD sub-categories. A blank cell or a short code such as NEC means that slot was not filled at that stage; the footnotes of the PDF explain each code.
What will move the cut off next time
- Number of posts: CEN 02/2024 had about 14,298 posts after revision; the latest notice has about 6,557. Fewer posts per trade usually means higher cut offs.
- Paper difficulty: a gentler set of questions lifts every shift, and normalisation cannot undo that.
- Trade choice: applicants crowd into a few well known trades, so their cut offs climb fastest.
- Negative marking: at 1/3 per wrong answer, accuracy separates candidates more than speed.
No official body publishes expected cut offs. Forecasts you see online are opinions; build a comfortable lead in your mocks instead.
Finding the cut off on your RRB website
Cut off marks are released with the result as a PDF on each RRB's own website, usually alongside the list of roll numbers shortlisted for document verification. Later, a final cut off for empanelment may follow after DV and medicals. Steps:
- Go to the site of the board you chose in your form (the CEN lists every RRB address).
- Find the CEN number and the result or cut off notice for the technician posts.
- Download the PDF and look up your CAT number and community.
Your own normalised score appears in the scorecard link that RRBs open for a short window after the result. Practise with the RRB technician previous papers to see where you stand.
Frequently asked questions
What was the RRB technician grade 3 previous year cut off?
It varied by RRB and trade. In the CEN 02/2024 cycle, RRB Chandigarh's list shows UR closing at 90.18 for S&T, 81.87 for EMU and 49.37 for blacksmith, all as normalised marks.
Is the technician cut off out of 100?
Yes. With 100 questions worth a mark apiece, the maximum is 100, and RRB publishes normalised marks out of 100, often to five decimal places.
What is the Grade 1 Signal cut off for OBC?
In the CEN 02/2024 cycle it was 63.61 at RRB Chandigarh and 59.50 at RRB Chennai for document verification. Other RRBs differ, so check your board's PDF.
Why is my friend's cut off different from mine?
You may have applied to different RRBs or trades. Each combination of RRB, railway, trade and community has its own cut off.
Does clearing 40% guarantee selection?
No. It only makes a UR or EWS candidate eligible to be considered. Selection depends on rank against the vacancies of your RRB and trade.
Where are the qualifying percentages written?
In the CEN itself, in the section on the CBT. Our RRB technician eligibility guide covers the other entry rules.
