RRB Technician Grade 3 Previous Year Question Paper: How to Use It

RailwayGrade IIIGrade I SignalUpdated 26 Oct 2026

An RRB technician grade 3 previous year question paper mirrors the real CBT more faithfully than anything else you can buy or borrow: 100 questions in 90 minutes, with 40 on general science, 25 each on maths and reasoning and 10 on general awareness. Solving a few under exam conditions shows you the level faster than any guide book.

This page explains what past Grade III and Grade I Signal papers contain, how to practise them in stages, five original practice items modelled on that level, and the official places to find real papers.

Before you open an RRB technician grade 3 previous year question paper, check its pattern

Recent technician CBTs (CEN 02/2024 onwards) follow one format for each grade, so make sure the old paper you pick matches it:

Section-wise questions in recent technician CBTs
GradeSections and questions
Grade IIIGeneral Science 40, Mathematics 25, Reasoning 25, General Awareness 10
Grade I SignalScience and Engineering basics 35, Computers 20, Maths 20, Reasoning 15, GA 10

Papers from the 2018 recruitment were part of a combined Assistant Loco Pilot and technician exam with a different, shorter first stage. They are still useful for topic practice, but do not use them to judge timing. Every chapter is listed on our RRB technician syllabus page.

What past technician papers show

Reports from candidates after the CEN 02/2024 shifts and later shifts point to a few steady habits of the paper setters:

  • Science is NCERT based. Grade III science questions are mostly one line facts or short numericals from class 9 and 10 physics, chemistry and biology: laws of motion, mirrors and lenses, electric circuits, acids and bases, human organs, tissues.
  • Maths is arithmetic, with a little algebra and geometry. Percentages, ratio, time and work, speed, mensuration and simplification appear in almost every shift.
  • Reasoning is easy to moderate but seating arrangement and puzzles take time.
  • General awareness tilts to current affairs, roughly half the 10 questions in recent shifts.
  • Signal papers give their largest science share to circuits, current and magnets, while the computer part sticks to terms, hardware, networks, operating systems and office software.

These patterns come from candidate feedback, not from RRB, so use them as a guide rather than a promise.

How to practise with a technician grade 3 previous year paper

  1. Week 1, untimed: solve one paper section by section with notes open. Circle each one that stumped you and note which chapter it belongs to.
  2. Weeks 2 to 6, sectional: take only the science part of two or three papers at a time, 30 minutes for 40 questions, then only maths and reasoning.
  3. From week 7, full timed papers: 90 minutes, no breaks, one each weekend. Score yourself with the 1/3 penalty.
  4. After every paper: write the wrong and skipped questions in one notebook, grouped by chapter. Revise that notebook, not the whole book.
Sunita gets 58 in her first full Grade III paper, with 18 wrong answers. Her notebook shows that 9 of the misses came from light and electricity. She revises those two chapters for a week, stops guessing in maths, and her next two papers come in at 66 and 71.

Five original practice questions

Each item below is original, pitched at the level technician aspirants report from the hall; none is lifted from an RRB paper. Check your picks against the key below.

  1. (Grade III, physics) The image formed by a convex mirror for any position of the object is: (a) real and inverted (b) virtual, erect and diminished (c) virtual and enlarged (d) real and of the same size
  2. (Grade III, chemistry) Which gas is given off when zinc granules react with dilute hydrochloric acid? (a) Oxygen (b) Chlorine (c) Hydrogen (d) Carbon dioxide
  3. (Maths) One pipe fills a tank in 12 hours and another empties it in 18 hours. If both are opened together on an empty tank, it fills in: (a) 30 hours (b) 36 hours (c) 24 hours (d) 6 hours
  4. (Reasoning) Find the next number: 3, 7, 15, 31, ? (a) 47 (b) 61 (c) 63 (d) 62
  5. (Grade I Signal, basic science) A 2 kW heater runs for 3 hours. The energy used is: (a) 1.5 kWh (b) 5 kWh (c) 6 kWh (d) 0.6 kWh

Answers: 1 (b), 2 (c), 3 (b), 4 (c), 5 (c).

Using a technician grade 1 previous year paper

Grade I Signal papers are fewer, because the post has far fewer vacancies, so stretch each one further. Solve the 35 basic science and engineering questions twice: once for marks, and again a month later to check whether the weak chapters have improved. The 20 computer questions reward plain recall, so turn every wrong one into a flash card. Since this grade also shares maths and reasoning topics with Grade III, Grade III papers make good extra practice for those two sections.

Official sources for the railway technician previous year question paper

RRB does not run a public archive of old papers, but it does release them in one official way:

  • When the provisional answer key is published, each candidate can log in through the link on the RRB websites and see the full question paper of their own shift, with their responses and the official key. Download and save it while the link is open, as it is taken down after the objection window.
  • The CEN and later notices are on the regional RRB websites, for example RRB Chandigarh.

Copies circulating later are usually built from these response sheets or from memory. Check that any copy you use has 100 questions in the official section order before trusting it. Once you are scoring steadily, compare yourself with the RRB technician cut off for your trade.

Answer key and response sheet links stay live only for a few days. Watch the official RRB website after your exam so you do not miss the window.

Common mistakes when solving old papers

  • Checking answers after every question. You lose the feel of time pressure.
  • Ignoring the 1/3 penalty while scoring yourself, which makes your scores look higher than they would be on the day.
  • Practising only maths because it feels productive, while 40 science marks wait.
  • Using papers from the wrong grade. A Grade III aspirant gains little from Grade I computer questions.

If you have not yet confirmed you qualify, read the eligibility rules for both grades first.

Frequently asked questions

Are RRB technician previous year question papers available officially?

Yes, in a limited way. During the answer key window, each candidate can view and save the question paper of their own shift with the official key through the RRB websites. RRB does not keep a permanent public archive.

How many papers should I solve before the CBT?

Quality matters more than count. Aim for at least 10 to 15 full timed papers in the last two months, with proper review of each, plus sectional practice before that.

Are 2018 technician papers still useful?

For topics, yes. The 2018 exam was a combined Assistant Loco Pilot and technician CBT with a different pattern, so use those papers for practice of concepts, not for judging speed.

Do questions repeat in the technician exam?

A technician question seldom returns unchanged, though its idea often does, especially 10th level science facts and standard arithmetic types.

What score in a previous paper is safe?

No single number is safe, since each board and trade sets its own bar. Busy Grade III trades closed very high for UR candidates in the CEN 02/2024 round, so aim for a steady score above your trade's last cut off.
