The RPF SI syllabus is a single computer based test of 120 questions: 50 on general awareness, 35 on arithmetic and 35 on general intelligence and reasoning, set at graduate level. The test is conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards to pick sub inspectors for RPF and RPSF; candidates who rank well next face a timed race, two jumps and a check of height and chest.
Below is the complete exam pattern, the content of each section, the physical standards for SI candidates, a sixteen week routine, and a short RPF SI ka syllabus summary in Hindi.

RPF SI syllabus and exam pattern table
| Section of the CBT | Items asked | Maximum marks |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning (General Intelligence) | 35 | 35 |
| Maths (Arithmetic) | 35 | 35 |
| GK (General Awareness) | 50 | 50 |
| All parts | 120 | 120 |
Ninety minutes cover all three parts, and you may move between them freely. An incorrect choice loses 0.33 marks; leaving a question untouched loses nothing. Since many shifts are held, raw scores go through normalisation before ranks are fixed.
To stay in the race, the last notice asked for at least 35 percent in the CBT from UR and EWS candidates and 30 percent from SC and ST candidates. That is only a floor: the number called for the physical round depends on vacancies and the RPF SI cut off in your category.
General Awareness: the 50 mark block
- Current affairs: national and world events, sports, prizes, government schemes and new appointments
- History of India, the freedom struggle and Indian art and culture
- Physical, Indian and world geography
- The Constitution, Parliament, courts and basic economic ideas such as budget and inflation
- General science up to class 10, with simple questions on technology and space
- Railways in India, important organisations and personalities
For a graduate level paper, expect slightly more analytical GK than the constable test: questions that link a scheme to its ministry or a constitutional article to its subject are common. Static GK from school books gives you a solid base, and a daily news habit covers the rest.
Arithmetic topics for SI
- Types of numbers, order of operations, fractions and decimals in everyday sums
- Squares, roots, LCM and HCF
- Percentage, ratio, partnership and ages
- Cost price and selling price, marked price, interest on loans over years
- Shared work and payment, filling tanks, trains crossing poles, streams
- Area, surface and volume of flat shapes and solids
- Elementary algebra, geometry and trigonometric ratios
- Mean, median, mode and reading simple data tables
Most arithmetic items are solvable in under a minute with the right shortcut. Memorise squares up to 30, cubes up to 20 and common fraction to percent conversions to save time.
General Intelligence and Reasoning
- Matching relationships and grouping items, with words, digits and shapes
- Number and letter series, missing terms
- Coding, decoding and symbol operations
- Blood relations, directions and ordering
- Syllogism, statement and conclusion, statement and assumption
- Overlapping circle diagrams, reflections, folded and punched sheets
- Analytical puzzles, data sufficiency and decision making
The SI paper tends to include more statement based and analytical questions than the constable version. Practise these under time, since they take longer to read.
Physical efficiency and measurement rules for SI
| Candidate | Race to finish | Long jump to clear | High jump to clear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men | 1600 metres within 6:30 | 12 ft | 3 ft 9 in |
| Women | 800 metres within 4:00 | 9 ft | 3 ft |
The PET and PMT are qualifying only, but failing either ends your candidature. Minimum height in the last notice matched the constable rules: 165 cm (men) and 157 cm (women) in the UR and OBC groups, relaxed for SC, ST and some listed hill and martial communities; a chest standard applies to men.
A sixteen week plan built around the CBT
- Weeks 1 to 4: arithmetic concepts and reasoning question types; NCERT science and history from class 6 to 10.
- Weeks 5 to 8: polity, geography and economy notes; 40 arithmetic questions every other day.
- Weeks 9 to 12: two complete timed mocks weekly, with careful review of wrong answers.
- Weeks 13 to 16: current affairs revision for the last year, three mocks a week and daily running to reach the PET time.
The constable recruitment uses the same subjects at 10th level; see the RPF constable syllabus. Other options appear on the railway exams hub and the defence and police hub.
