RPF Constable Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Railway10th pass120 questionsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The RPF constable syllabus has three subjects in one computer based test: General Awareness with 50 questions, Arithmetic with 35 and General Intelligence and Reasoning with 35, making 120 one mark questions in 90 minutes. Those who pass then face a running and jumping test, body measurements and document checks.

The figures below follow the most recent recruitment notice for constables in the Railway Protection Force and the Railway Protection Special Force (the CEN RPF 02 series). Railway boards can revise the pattern with each notice, so treat the newest one as final.

Exam at a glance

  • Recruited by

Railway Recruitment Boards, for the Railway Protection Force and RPSF
  • Stages

CBT, then PET and PMT, then document verification
  • CBT

    120 questions, 120 marks, 90 minutes
  • Negative marking

1/3 mark cut for each wrong answer
  • Qualifying in CBT

35% for UR and EWS, 30% for SC and ST in the last notice
  • Eligibility

10th pass; age 18 to 28 years for general category
  • Official website

Selection process in three steps

  1. Computer based test: a single objective paper. You need at least the qualifying percentage, and only top scorers, several times the number of posts, are called to the next round.
  2. Physical efficiency test and physical measurement test: a timed run, a long jump and a high jump, followed by height and chest checks. Both are qualifying only.
  3. Document verification and medical: certificates for age, education and category are checked before the final list.

The CBT is the only stage that ranks you. That is why almost all of your study hours should go into the three written subjects, with daily running added a few months before the physical test.

General Awareness5050

General Intelligence and Reasoning3535

The paper lasts 90 minutes in all, with no separate timer per subject. Every wrong answer costs 0.33 marks and nothing is lost for a question you leave. Because the test is held in several sittings, raw marks are normalised before ranks are drawn up.

To be considered at all, the last notice set the minimum CBT score at 35 percent (UR, EWS) and 30 percent (SC, ST), and allowed a small relaxation possible for PwBD candidates. Clearing these marks does not guarantee a call for the physical test; that depends on the RPF constable cut off for your category.

General awareness topics

With 50 of the 120 marks, this is the biggest block of the RPF constable syllabus. The notice describes it broadly, so prepare these areas:

  • Current affairs from India and abroad: sports, awards, schemes and appointments of the last year or so
  • Indian history, the freedom movement and culture
  • Physical and Indian geography
  • Indian polity and the Constitution, basic economics
  • General science at class 10 level: physics, chemistry and life science
  • Science and technology developments, the Indian Railways and important personalities

Arithmetic topics

  • Numbers and simplification using BODMAS; fractions and decimals
  • Square roots, HCF and LCM
  • Ratio and proportion, percentages, ages
  • Discount and profit or loss sums; interest, both simple and compound
  • Time and work, pipes and cisterns, time and distance
  • Mensuration and simple algebra
  • Basic geometry and trigonometry ratios
  • Mean, median and simple statistics; clock and calendar puzzles

Questions sit around class 10 level. Most of them reward fast and accurate calculation more than tricky ideas, so daily speed practice on tables, squares and percentages pays off.

General intelligence and reasoning topics

  • Word and figure analogies; spotting the odd item
  • Series with letters or numbers
  • Coding patterns and symbol based mathematical operations
  • Blood relations and direction sense
  • Syllogism, statements, arguments and assumptions, conclusions and decision making
  • Jumbling, Venn diagrams
  • Data interpretation and sufficiency, analytical reasoning

For most candidates reasoning brings marks fastest. Many candidates answer these 35 questions first and then spend the remaining time on general awareness and maths.

Four month plan for the written test

Split the 50 GK questions into two halves in your head: static GK and science on one side, current affairs on the other. Static topics can be finished early from NCERT class 6 to 10 books; current affairs need a short daily habit right up to exam day.

  1. Month 1: arithmetic basics and reasoning types, plus NCERT science for class 9 and 10.
  2. Month 2: history, geography and polity notes; one maths chapter every two days.
  3. Month 3: mixed practice and the first full mocks of 120 questions in 90 minutes.
  4. Month 4: revision, current affairs of the last twelve months and two mocks a week, with a daily run of 2 to 3 km.
Sunil runs his family's grocery counter until evening. He solves 20 reasoning questions on his lunch break, reads current affairs on the bus, and keeps one hour at night for maths. He leaves any question he cannot settle in under a minute, since a wrong guess pulls his score down by 0.33.

The SI recruitment shares several subjects at a higher level; see the RPF SI syllabus, and the RRB group D syllabus if you are also trying for other railway posts.
