The Navy MR syllabus for Agniveer (Matric Recruit) is pitched at Class 10 and has two sections: Science and Mathematics, and General Awareness, tested in a 50 question online paper of 30 minutes. The same pattern is repeated in a written exam at the recruitment centre, after you clear a physical fitness test, so you prepare once and use it twice.
MR sailors serve in roles such as chef, steward and hygienist, which is why the entry needs only matriculation. Below are the stage wise pattern, topics for each section, the PFT standards that decide many results, and a short syllabus in Hindi. If you have passed Class 12 with maths and physics, you may also qualify for the Senior Secondary Recruit entry, whose papers are on the Navy SSR syllabus page.

Selection stages for Agniveer MR
Recruitment now runs in two stages. Stage I is the Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET), an online computer based test. Candidates are shortlisted state wise on INET marks. Stage II is held at a recruitment centre and has four parts in order: the physical fitness test, a written exam for those who clear it, a recruitment medical, and then a merit based provisional select list. Selected candidates go through a final medical at INS Chilka before enrolment.
Holders of the NCC C certificate and sponsored candidates covered by the notification are exempted from INET and called straight to Stage II after their certificates are checked. That exemption is worth knowing about if you were an NCC cadet in school or college.

General awareness topics
- India and its geography: rivers, mountains, soils, ports and states with capitals.
- Heritage: India's struggle for independence, religions, arts and dance forms, national symbols and heritage.
- Defence: the armed forces, ranks, wars and neighbouring countries.
- Static GK: famous books with their writers, awards, important days, discoveries, abbreviations, currencies and languages.
- Current affairs and sports: recent national and international events, championships and monuments.
- Health: diseases and nutrition.
A simple habit helps here: read one newspaper page a day and note anything about the Navy, defence deals and national awards in a single notebook.
PFT standards and height
| Test | Standard |
|---|---|
| 1.6 km run | 6 minutes 30 seconds |
| Squats (uthak baithak) | 20 |
| Push ups | 15 |
| Bent knee sit ups | 15 |
Women have a longer run time and lower repetition counts. The Army route has its own rally tests, set out on our Agniveer syllabus page. The PFT is compulsory and a fail ends that attempt, so start running at least two months before the Stage II call. The minimum height is 157 cm for both men and women.
PFT figures and the date of birth window change with each batch. Use the standards printed for your own batch on the Navy's recruitment site before you train to a target.
A six week plan for MR candidates
- Weeks 1 and 2: Class 10 maths chapters on percentage, ratio, equations and mensuration, solving 20 sums a day.
- Weeks 3 and 4: science chapters on motion, electricity, metals and carbon compounds, with short notes.
- Week 5: general awareness, defence facts and two months of current affairs.
- Week 6: timed 50 question sets in 30 minutes, every second day.
Run alongside all six weeks: three running sessions and two squat and push up sessions each week.
Ravi passed Class 10 last year with 62% and helps out at a family shop. He studies maths for an hour before work and science after dinner, runs 1.6 km at dawn three days a week, and checks his time with a phone stopwatch. By week five his run has dropped under six and a half minutes.
Books to use
The NCERT Class 9 and 10 science and maths books cover almost the whole Science and Mathematics section. For general awareness, a general knowledge yearbook and a daily newspaper are enough. Download the official sample papers and syllabus from the Navy's recruitment portal; they show the exact style of the 50 question test. Our defence and police section compares other entries for school leavers, while our page on the IAF's X group covers the Air Force route.
Frequently asked questions
What does MR mean in the Navy?
MR stands for Matric Recruit. It is the Agniveer entry open to candidates who have passed Class 10, for roles such as chef, steward and hygienist.
How many questions does the Navy MR test have?
The INET and the Stage II written exam each have 50 objective questions of one mark, to be answered in 30 minutes.
Will a wrong answer in Navy MR lose me marks?
Yes. A wrong answer costs 0.25 mark, while an unanswered question costs nothing, so skip anything you cannot narrow down.
Can girls apply for Navy MR?
The latest notification invites unmarried male and unmarried female candidates. Women have separate PFT standards, which are printed in the notification.
What percentage in Class 10 is needed?
You need matriculation with at least 50% aggregate from a recognised board. Students appearing for Class 10 can apply if they produce the marksheet with the required marks later.
Is the Navy MR syllabus different from SSR?
Yes. MR is set at Class 10 level with science, maths and general awareness, while SSR is for Class 12 candidates and includes English, physics and higher maths. See our Navy SSR page for that pattern.
