Allahabad High Court RO ARO Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Civil servicesGraduate postsNo minus in prelimsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Allahabad high court RO ARO syllabus in one line: three parts, namely an objective paper of 200 questions on general studies, Uttar Pradesh, reasoning, English, Hindi and computers; a descriptive paper of 150 marks built around English writing and translation; and a timed English typing test. All three are set by the High Court itself for Review Officer and Assistant Review Officer posts at its Prayagraj seat and Lucknow bench.

The latest advertisement, which also covered Computer Assistant posts, was reported at 543 vacancies in all. This page follows the pattern published for that cycle, with the topics behind each subject and a plan giving the descriptive English paper with the seriousness it needs. Preparing for state commission posts with the same names too? compare the UPPSC RO ARO syllabus, which is a different exam.

  • Prelims: a correct response is worth one mark, and the reports we checked mention no penalty for errors.
  • Mains: one report puts the minimum at 50 out of 150; confirm it in the notice.
  • Typing: you need 25 out of 50 to qualify, which works out to about 25 correct words a minute. Every mistake, including missed or extra words, wrong spellings or broken formatting, costs a fraction of a mark.

Prelims subjects and topics

The objective paper is wide. Group the subjects like this while you study:

General studies

  • General science: forces, light, electricity, common chemicals, the human body, nutrition and disease
  • Indian history, plus the national movement traced from the first Congress sessions up to Partition
  • Indian polity, economy and culture: the Constitution, rights and duties, RBI, budget, GST, art forms
  • Agriculture, commerce and trade, including irrigation, crops and foreign trade
  • Population, ecology and urbanisation, climate change and pollution
  • World and Indian geography: monsoon, rivers, minerals, soils
  • News from about the twelve months before the paper

Uttar Pradesh special knowledge

  • History, geography, rivers and climate of UP
  • State economy, agriculture, schemes and census data
  • Festivals, tourism, literature, wildlife and well known figures of the state

General intelligence

  • Coding, series, analogy, syllogism
  • Seating and puzzles, calendar and clock, simple data interpretation

Language and computers

  • General English: grammar, error spotting, sentence improvement, voice, narration, cloze tests
  • General Hindi: sandhi, samas, paryayvachi, vilom, muhavare, vakya shuddhi, gadyansh
  • Computer knowledge: hardware and software, operating systems, office software for documents, sheets and slides, email and the web, safe use online

Mains: the descriptive paper section by section

Mains paper, 150 marks in 2 hours
SectionTaskMarks
AEnglish essay of about 200 words30
BEnglish precis of a given passage30
C (i)Translate an English passage into Hindi25
C (ii)Translate a Hindi passage into English25
DEnglish comprehension with answers in your own words40

Notice how much of this paper rewards plain, correct English. Court work involves drafting notes and summaries, and the paper is built to test exactly that. Legal vocabulary helps in translation passages, so learn common terms such as petition, appeal, order, stay, bail and decree in both languages.

Getting through the typing test

The computer test asks you to reproduce a printed English passage on screen, with its paragraphs and punctuation, in 20 minutes. Since marks are cut for each error, accuracy matters more than raw speed. Aim to type 30 to 35 words a minute comfortably so that you have a buffer for checking.

Saurabh from Prayagraj cleared prelims comfortably but had only ever typed with two fingers. He spent 25 minutes every morning on touch typing drills, then switched to copying full pages from court judgments printed in newspapers. By the sixth week he was typing 34 words a minute with two or three slips per page, well above the 25 word mark.

A study order that fits the three stages

  1. Months 1 and 2: General studies and UP knowledge for prelims, two subjects at a time, with 50 objective questions each evening. Start typing practice from the first week.
  2. Month 3: Reasoning, computer basics, Hindi and English objective grammar, then full 200 question papers in three hours.
  3. Month 4 (after prelims): One essay, one precis and two translation passages every day. Get someone with good English to mark your work honestly.

NCERT books from classes 6 to 12 are a sound base for the general studies block. For UP topics, use state government publications and a good state level newspaper. For the Hindi section, a school level Hindi grammar book will do.

Eligibility and where to confirm it

Both posts start from the same floor: a bachelor's degree, whatever the subject, awarded by a recognised Indian university. The notice may also ask for computer skills or a certificate, and sets the age limits and relaxations for Uttar Pradesh reserved categories. Secondary reports do not agree on the maximum age for the latest cycle, so take it directly from the advertisement on the High Court's recruitment portal.

The pattern above is drawn from reports on the latest advertisement. The High Court can change the stages or marks for the next cycle, so treat the official notice as final whenever it differs from this page.

For other Uttar Pradesh papers with a similar general studies base, look at the UPPSC syllabus or the UPSSSC PET paper.

Frequently asked questions

Do Review Officer and Assistant Review Officer candidates study different topics?

No. The reported syllabus and stages are identical for Review Officer and Assistant Review Officer. Merit lists are prepared separately for each post.

Will a wrong answer in the prelims cost me marks?

Reports on the latest advertisement say the 200 question paper does not punish incorrect choices. Confirm this in the instructions printed on your question booklet.

What is asked in the mains?

A 150 mark paper in two hours: an English essay (30), an English precis (30), two translations, one into Hindi and one into English (25 each) and English comprehension (40).

What typing speed do I need?

The test needs about 25 correct words a minute, which equals 25 out of 50 marks. You type a passage of roughly 500 English words in 20 minutes, and errors reduce your score.

Is there an interview?

The scheme reported for the latest advertisement ends with the typing test, with no interview after it. Selection depends on the written stages and the computer test.

Is this the same as the UPPSC RO ARO exam?

No. UPPSC recruits RO and ARO staff for the state secretariat and other offices through its own exam. The High Court posts are filled through the High Court's separate recruitment.
