The COMEDK syllabus for the UGET engineering entrance is drawn from physics, chemistry and mathematics of class 11 and class 12, the same ground covered in first and second PUC in Karnataka and in CBSE schools. The paper has 180 multiple choice questions, 60 per subject, answered on a computer in 3 hours, and errors are not penalised.
Scores from this test are used for BE and BTech seats in private engineering colleges across Karnataka that belong to the consortium. Because the content overlaps heavily with your board course, good preparation is mostly about speed and accuracy rather than extra topics.

How the UGET admission process runs
COMEDK UGET is a single written test followed by counselling. There is no interview and no separate paper for each subject.
- Registration: you apply online on the consortium's website and choose a test city and slot.
- Computer based test: one sitting of three hours with all three subjects.
- Rank list: ranks come from your test score alone; board marks only decide whether you are eligible.
- Counselling: seats in member colleges are allotted online by rank, course and category.
If you are also aiming for government seats in the state, those go through a different test, explained on our KCET syllabus page.
COMEDK exam pattern
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 60 | 60 |
| Chemistry | 60 | 60 |
| Mathematics | 60 | 60 |
| All three | 180 | 180 |
- The whole paper lasts 3 hours, which works out to one minute per question.
- Every item is a single correct choice from four options.
- Questions are set in English only.
- You can move between subjects freely during the test as reported for recent cycles; read the test day instructions in case sectional timing is introduced.
COMEDK marking scheme and tie breaking
Scoring works in one direction only. Each right response adds a mark, while an error or a skip simply adds nothing. With no penalty in play, a blank is wasted chance, so put down your most likely option on every item, even in the final minute.
When two candidates finish with the same score, the brochure has used the number of wrong answers to separate them, with fewer incorrect responses placing you higher, and further rules after that if needed. So accuracy still matters even though nothing is deducted. A habit of careful elimination helps you twice: it raises your score and protects you in a tie.
Physics topics in the COMEDK syllabus
From class 11 (first PUC)
- Physical world, units, dimensions and errors in measurement
- Kinematics: straight line motion, vectors, projectile and circular motion
- Newton's laws with friction; work, energy, power and collisions
- Systems of particles, torque, moment of inertia and rolling
- Gravitation: orbital and escape speed, satellites
- Solids and fluids: elastic moduli, Bernoulli, viscosity, surface tension
- Thermal physics: heat transfer, laws of thermodynamics, kinetic theory
- SHM, oscillations, wave motion, sound and beats
From class 12 (second PUC)
- Electric charges, fields, potential and capacitance
- Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's rules, cells and meters
- Moving charges and magnetism, earth's magnetism
- Faraday's law, inductance and alternating current circuits
- Spectrum of electromagnetic waves
- Optics of mirrors and lenses with instruments, then wave optics topics like Young's experiment and diffraction
- Photoelectric effect, Bohr model, radioactivity and nuclear energy
- Diodes, transistors and logic gates
Chemistry chapters to cover
Physical side
- Mole calculations, atomic models and quantum numbers, bonding and molecular shape
- Gaseous and liquid states, energetics, chemical and ionic equilibrium
- Oxidation and reduction, cells and conductance, rate of reaction, colligative properties
Inorganic side
- Periodic table and periodic properties
- Hydrogen and its compounds, alkali and alkaline earth metals, groups 13 to 18
- Transition elements, lanthanoids and actinoids, plus coordination chemistry with IUPAC names
Organic side
- Nomenclature, isomers, electronic effects and reaction types
- Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic compounds; halogen compounds
- Oxygen containing compounds: alcohol, phenol, ether, carbonyl compounds and acids
- Nitrogen compounds, carbohydrates and proteins, polymers, everyday chemistry
Chapters that boards have trimmed in recent years may or may not stay in the test. The brochure lists the exact syllabus for your cycle, so tick it off chapter by chapter.
Mathematics chapters to cover
- Algebra: sets and functions, complex numbers and quadratics, AP and GP, counting principles, the binomial expansion, matrices with determinants, induction
- Trigonometry: identities, equations and inverse functions
- Two dimensional geometry: lines, circles and the three conic sections
- Calculus: limits, continuity, derivatives and their uses (maxima, minima, tangents), integration and its use for areas, first order differential equations
- Vectors and 3D: dot and cross products, lines and planes in space
- Statistics and probability: mean deviation and variance, conditional probability with Bayes' rule, probability distributions
- Linear programming by the graphical method
Maths usually takes the longest per question. Many toppers attempt it first while fresh, then move to chemistry, which tends to be the quickest of the three.
A COMEDK study plan for the last few months
Since the paper tests speed on familiar content, organise your time around volume of practice.
- Finish your board chapters first: NCERT and your PUC textbooks cover nearly everything. Do not chase advanced problem books meant for much harder exams.
- Build a one minute rhythm: solve sets of 30 questions in 30 minutes, mixing subjects, so the three hour pace becomes natural.
- Formula sheets: keep one page per subject for physics formulas, named organic reactions and calculus results, and read them every night.
- Full mocks: in the final six weeks, sit two full computer based mocks a week and analyse every wrong answer.
Students taking several engineering tests can compare this paper with the JEE Main syllabus, which goes deeper and penalises wrong answers, or with the MHT CET syllabus when Maharashtra colleges are also on your list.
Who can sit the test
- Pass in second PUC, class 12 or an equivalent with physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- The third subject is normally chemistry; biotechnology, biology, computer science or electronics have been accepted in its place.
- At least 45 percent aggregate in the three optional subjects for the general category, and 40 percent for Karnataka candidates in the SC, ST and OBC groups, with a pass in each.
- No upper age limit is set by the consortium.
Students who are in class 12 at the time of applying can register, provided they meet the marks rule when admission happens. For other admission tests, browse our entrance exams hub.
Frequently asked questions
Do incorrect answers lower a COMEDK UGET score?
No. A correct answer gets 1 mark, and wrong or unattempted questions get zero. That is why you should attempt every question.
Is the COMEDK syllabus the same as the PUC syllabus?
Largely yes. The test is based on physics, chemistry and maths of first and second PUC or class 11 and 12. Check the brochure for any chapter added or dropped in your year.
How many questions does COMEDK UGET have?
There are 180 questions in total, with 60 each from physics, chemistry and mathematics. Each carries 1 mark, so the maximum score is 180.
Is COMEDK harder than KCET?
Both are based on the same school syllabus. COMEDK has a single computer based paper with all three subjects, while KCET has separate papers and also counts board marks for engineering ranks. Difficulty varies by year.
Can I take the COMEDK exam in Kannada or Hindi?
No. The paper is offered only in English as per recent brochures.
Is biology part of the COMEDK engineering test?
No. UGET for engineering covers only physics, chemistry and mathematics.
