The BITSAT syllabus has four parts: physics, chemistry, a combined English proficiency and logical reasoning part, and mathematics (or biology for a few programmes), tested in one 3 hour online paper of 130 questions. BITS Pilani uses this admission test for its integrated first degree programmes at the Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses, and the content follows the class 11 and 12 science curriculum quite closely.
What sets BITSAT apart is speed. You get well under a minute and a half per question, and an extra set of bonus questions opens only if you finish early. This guide covers the pattern, the syllabus for each part, the BITSAT marking scheme and how campus cutoffs are decided.

BITSAT exam pattern part by part
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Physics | 30 | 90 |
| II | Chemistry | 30 | 90 |
| III (a) | English proficiency | 10 | 30 |
| III (b) | Logical reasoning | 20 | 60 |
| IV | Mathematics or biology | 40 | 120 |
| Total | 130 | 390 | |
Biology replaces mathematics only for the B.Pharm programme and a small number of other courses named in the brochure. You can move freely between parts during the 3 hours, which lets you start with whatever you are fastest at.
BITSAT marking scheme and bonus questions
Three marks come with every right response and one is lost for every incorrect response, while a skipped item stays at zero. A blind guess therefore has a poor expected return, but a guess between two options you could not separate is worth taking.
The bonus works like this. If you attempt all 130 questions before the time ends, you may choose to see 12 more questions, marked the same way, for up to 36 extra marks. Once you open them, you can no longer go back and change any of your first 130 answers. Do not rush the main paper only to reach the bonus; a careless main paper loses more marks than the bonus can return.
BITSAT syllabus for physics and chemistry
Physics
Units and measurement, motion in one and two dimensions, laws of motion, impulse and momentum, work, power and energy, rigid body rotation, gravitation, mechanics of solids and fluids, oscillations, waves, heat and thermodynamics, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism produced by currents, electromagnetic induction, optics, modern physics and semiconductor devices.
Chemistry
States of matter, atomic structure, periodicity and bonding, thermodynamics, physical and ionic equilibrium, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, hydrogen and s block elements, p, d and f block elements with coordination compounds, basic organic chemistry and hydrocarbons, stereochemistry, organic compounds containing oxygen and those containing nitrogen, biological, industrial and environmental chemistry, and principles of experimental chemistry.
Note that BITSAT chemistry still lists some chapters, such as states of matter and hydrogen, that other entrance tests have trimmed. If you also prepare for the JEE Main syllabus, keep those extra chapters on your list.
BITSAT English syllabus and logical reasoning
English proficiency (10 questions)
- Grammar: determiners, prepositions, modals, tenses, voice, subject verb agreement, question tags, relative clauses
- Vocabulary: synonyms and antonyms, one word substitutes, homophones, spelling, collocations, phrasal verbs, idioms and analogies
- Reading comprehension: main idea, inference, fact and opinion, figurative language, cloze passages
- Composition: rearranging sentences, paragraph unity, linking devices
Logical reasoning (20 questions)
- Verbal: analogy, classification, series completion, logical deduction, chart logic
- Non verbal: pattern perception, figure formation and analysis, paper cutting, figure matrix, rule detection
These 30 questions are worth 90 marks and need no physics or maths. Getting through them briskly frees time for the longer calculations elsewhere.
Mathematics and biology units
Mathematics (40 questions)
Algebra (complex numbers, quadratic equations, sequences, permutations, binomial theorem, matrices and determinants), trigonometry, two dimensional coordinate geometry, three dimensional geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, ordinary differential equations, probability and statistics, vectors, linear programming and mathematical modelling.
Biology (for programmes that require it)
Diversity in living organisms, cell structure and function, genetics and evolution, structure and function of plants and animals, plant reproduction and growth, human reproduction and development, ecology and environment, biology and human welfare, and biotechnology with its applications.
With 120 of the 390 marks riding on Part IV, the syllabus of BITSAT maths should get the largest slice of an engineering aspirant's week.
Eligibility, BITSAT exam pattern and cutoff logic
To be considered, a class 12 pass with PCM is required (PCB for B.Pharm), with at least 75% aggregate in those three subjects and at least 60% in each, along with adequate English. Board toppers have a separate direct admission route described in the brochure.
There is no single qualifying cutoff. After the test, BITS invites applications for programmes and then runs admission iterations, filling each programme at each campus in order of BITSAT score. The score of the last admitted candidate becomes that programme's cutoff for the year, so the most sought after programmes at Pilani usually close far higher than others. These closing scores change every year with the number of applicants and seats, so treat any figure you see as history, not a promise.
A twelve week BITSAT plan
- Weeks 1 to 6: finish physics, chemistry and maths topics from your class 11 and 12 books. Practise short, formula based questions rather than long derivations.
- Weeks 7 and 8: English grammar and vocabulary for 20 minutes daily, and two reasoning sets a day.
- Weeks 9 to 12: full online mock tests of 130 questions in 3 hours, three a week. Record how long each part takes and aim to finish with 15 minutes to spare.
Books and study material
NCERT textbooks for physics, chemistry, maths and biology are the foundation, as most questions sit at the board exam level with an added need for speed. A standard school grammar and vocabulary book handles English, and any general reasoning practice book covers Part III (b). Students preparing for medicine as well can compare the biology portion with the NEET syllabus. Our entrance exams hub lists other private and state engineering tests, such as the VITEEE syllabus, that you might take alongside BITSAT.
Frequently asked questions
What is the BITSAT marking scheme?
A right answer adds 3, an incorrect one subtracts 1. Questions left unanswered score zero. The same rule applies to the 12 bonus questions.
How many questions are in BITSAT?
The main paper has 130 questions for 390 marks: 30 physics, 30 chemistry, 10 English proficiency, 20 logical reasoning and 40 maths or biology. Twelve bonus questions are offered only if you attempt all 130 within the 3 hours.
Is the BITSAT syllabus the same as JEE Main?
Much of physics, chemistry and maths overlaps, as both follow class 11 and 12. BITSAT adds English proficiency and logical reasoning, and its chemistry list keeps a few chapters that JEE Main has dropped.
What is in the BITSAT English syllabus?
Grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and composition. Questions test usage such as tenses, prepositions and voice, word meanings and idioms, short passages and sentence ordering.
What is the BITSAT cutoff?
Each programme at each campus has its own closing score, set by the last candidate admitted in the iterations. Because it shifts each year, look at the admission updates from BITS after the test for the latest figures.
Can I take BITSAT twice in one year?
Yes, BITS has offered two sessions and allowed candidates to sit both, with the better score used. Check the latest brochure, as session rules can change.
