The KCET syllabus is the science taught across the two PUC years in Karnataka: physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology, each tested in its own paper of 60 one-mark questions answered in 80 minutes, with no marks taken away for a wrong answer. Which papers you sit depends on the course you want, so an engineering aspirant needs physics, chemistry and maths, while farm science and allied courses lean on biology.
The Karnataka Examinations Authority runs the test for professional seats in the state. This page sets out the KCET exam pattern and how each answer is scored, the chapters in each subject, how your board marks feed into an engineering rank and a revision plan built around the PUC textbooks. Sitting a national test too? Set this beside the JEE Main syllabus, or for life science courses, the NEET syllabus.

How the KCET exam is organised
KCET has a single round of papers rather than separate screening and final stages. You appear once, in the papers your chosen course needs, and the result goes straight into a merit rank used for seat allotment.
- The CET papers: up to four objective papers spread over two days, one subject per sitting.
- Kannada language test: only for certain applicants claiming government seats, such as candidates under the Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadiga clauses. It is a qualifying test, not part of your rank.
- Document verification: eligibility and category claims are checked before option entry.
- Counselling: seats in engineering, farm science, veterinary, pharmacy, yoga and naturopathy and other courses are allotted by rank.
Medical and dental seats in Karnataka are filled through NEET scores, though KEA handles that counselling too. So a PCB student aiming only for MBBS still writes NEET, while the biology paper of CET serves the other life science courses.
KCET exam pattern and how marks are given
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 60 | 60 | 80 minutes |
| Chemistry | 60 | 60 | 80 minutes |
| Mathematics | 60 | 60 | 80 minutes |
| Biology | 60 | 60 | 80 minutes |
The KCET marking scheme is simple: one mark for each right answer and nothing deducted when you get one wrong or skip it. Every item offers four choices, of which only one is right. Marking more than one bubble earns zero for that question, and shading cannot be undone on the OMR sheet, so mark carefully.
Sixty items in 80 minutes leaves roughly 80 seconds per item. That sounds generous, yet maths and physics numericals can eat several minutes each, so the real skill is choosing the order in which you attempt them.
Which papers you need for each course
- Engineering and technology: physics, chemistry and mathematics, a total of 180 marks.
- Farm science courses such as B.Sc agriculture, horticulture and forestry: physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology are used, with the exact combination set in the bulletin.
- Veterinary science: physics, chemistry and biology.
- B.Pharm and Pharm.D: physics and chemistry with either mathematics or biology.
Many students write all four papers to keep every option open. If you have taken PCMB in PUC, that is usually the safer path, because the extra sitting costs little and widens your counselling choices.
Subject-wise KCET exam syllabus
KEA draws questions from the first and second PUC syllabus prescribed by the state's Department of School Education (Pre-University). The PUC textbooks follow the rationalised national science books, so chapters dropped from those books should not be studied for CET. Main units:
Physics
- First PUC: measuring physical quantities and their units; kinematics along a straight line and in two dimensions; Newton's laws with friction; work done, power and the two forms of mechanical energy; rotation of rigid bodies; gravitation and satellites; elasticity, pressure, viscosity and surface tension of matter; heat flow, first and second thermodynamic laws, molecular motion in gases; simple harmonic motion and wave motion
- Second PUC: Coulomb's law and Gauss's theorem; electric potential and capacitors; Ohm's law, cells and Kirchhoff's rules; magnetic force on moving charges and the earth's magnetism; Faraday's induction, alternating current circuits; the spectrum of EM waves; mirrors, lenses, interference and diffraction; photoelectric effect and matter waves; Bohr model, nuclear binding and radioactivity; diodes and semiconductor basics
Chemistry
- First PUC: mole concept and stoichiometry; atomic structure and quantum numbers; periodic trends; bonding and molecular shapes; enthalpy and energy changes; equilibrium in reactions and in ions; oxidation numbers and redox; naming organic compounds, isomers and how reactions proceed; saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, benzene
- Second PUC: colligative properties of solutions; cells, conductance and electrolysis; rate laws and order of reaction; d and f block metals; coordination complexes and naming rules; organic halogen compounds; alcohols, phenols, ethers and carbonyl compounds; acids and nitrogen compounds; biomolecules such as sugars, proteins and nucleic acids
Mathematics
- First PUC: sets and types of functions; trigonometry and its identities; complex numbers and quadratics; inequalities; counting through permutations and combinations; binomial expansion; progressions; straight lines and the conic sections; coordinates in space; first ideas of limits and derivatives; mean deviation and variance; basic probability
- Second PUC: types of relations and inverse trigonometry; matrix algebra and determinants; continuity and derivatives with their uses; integration and area under curves; differential equations; vector algebra and lines in space; linear programming; conditional probability, Bayes' theorem and distributions
Biology
- First PUC: classification of living things, plant and animal kingdoms; structure of flowering plants inside and out; animal tissues; the cell and cell division; photosynthesis, respiration and plant growth; digestion, breathing, circulation, excretion, movement, nerves and hormones
- Second PUC: sexual reproduction in plants and humans, reproductive health; Mendelian inheritance, the molecular basis of inheritance and evolution; human health, disease and microbes in welfare; principles of biotechnology and its uses; organisms and populations, ecosystems and biodiversity
How PUC marks shape your engineering rank
For engineering, KEA does not rank you on CET alone. Your CET score in physics, chemistry and maths and your second PUC marks in the same three subjects are given equal weight, half each, to produce the merit rank. A strong board result can lift a middling CET score, and a weak one can pull a good score down.
For the other courses the weighting and subject mix are set in the bulletin, so read that section before planning your revision. Since the board exam usually falls a few weeks before CET, one round of preparation serves both if you study the textbook chapters properly rather than only practising shortcuts.
What to focus on in each paper
KEA does not publish a chapter weightage, but question papers from past cycles show that both PUC years are tested, with a large share from second PUC. A few patterns students report repeatedly:
- Mathematics: calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals, differential equations) and algebra (matrices, determinants, probability) take a big share. Speed with standard integrals saves real time.
- Physics: current, magnetic effects and modern physics show up often; mechanics questions tend to be direct formula use.
- Chemistry: often the scoring paper, since many items come close to textbook statements and named reactions in organic chemistry.
- Biology: rewards line by line reading of the textbook, especially genetics, human physiology and plant physiology.
Since a wrong bubble costs you nothing, never hand in a blank one. Make your best guess on the last few questions in the final two minutes.
A twelve week KCET study plan
- Weeks 1 to 4: first PUC chapters, one subject a day in rotation, with 20 textbook level questions after each chapter.
- Weeks 5 to 8: second PUC chapters alongside board preparation. Keep a single formula notebook per subject.
- Weeks 9 and 10: a pair of complete 60-item papers daily under the 80-minute limit, using past CET papers from KEA where available.
- Weeks 11 and 12: error review. Redo every question you got wrong and revise the chapters behind them.
Your main books are the PUC textbooks themselves. Add one standard objective question bank per subject only after a chapter is clear, and use past KCET papers to get used to the wording.
Common doubts about the KCET syllabus
Students often ask whether KCET follows the national syllabus used for other entrance tests. The overlap is large because the PUC books are built on the same national books, but CET sticks to what the state PUC course prescribes. Where your PUC book and a coaching module disagree, trust the textbook.
Comparing it with neighbours helps too. The COMEDK syllabus covers private engineering seats in the same state, while the MHT CET syllabus shows how another state frames its test. For a broader view, browse the entrance exams section.
Frequently asked questions
Will a wrong answer in KCET cost me marks?
No. Recent KCET papers award one mark per correct answer with no deduction for wrong answers. Answer every question, since a guess cannot hurt your score.
How many questions does each KCET paper carry?
Every paper carries 60 objective items, one mark apiece. Physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology are separate papers, so the PCM total for engineering is 180 marks.
How long is each KCET paper?
Every paper lasts 80 minutes, that is 1 hour 20 minutes. The papers are spread over two days with separate sittings for each subject.
Is the KCET syllabus based on first PUC or second PUC?
Both. Questions come from the first and second PUC science syllabus of Karnataka, though second PUC chapters tend to carry more questions. Study both years thoroughly.
Do board marks count in the KCET rank?
Yes, for engineering. Your PCM marks in second PUC and your CET PCM score are weighted equally to compute the rank. Check the bulletin for the formula used for other courses.
Who has to write the Kannada language test?
Only certain candidates claiming government seats, such as those under the Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadiga clauses, need it. It is qualifying and does not add to your rank.
