VITEEE Exam Pattern and Syllabus, Section by Section

Entrance12th levelOnline CBTUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The latest VITEEE exam pattern is a single 2 hour online paper holding 100 objective questions: 40 in Mathematics (or Biology for BPCEA candidates), 25 in Physics, 25 in Chemistry, 5 in English and 5 in Aptitude. Each section runs on its own timer, you gain 4 for each correct response and lose 1 for each incorrect one.

VIT shortened the paper recently, so older guides quoting 125 questions are out of date. Below you will find the current marking scheme, every unit of the VITEEE syllabus, what changed, and a study routine shaped around the section clocks. If you are also sitting other engineering entrances, keep the JEE Main syllabus open too, along with the BITSAT syllabus, since most of the Class 11 and 12 content overlaps.

How VITEEE works from test to seat

VITEEE is a single paper with no second stage. You sit the computer based test at the centre, date and shift VIT allots to you (the old self booking of slots has been dropped, and the city follows your correspondence address). VIT then publishes ranks, and counselling uses those ranks to offer programmes and campuses in order.

You pick one of two papers when you apply:

  • MPCEA (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English, Aptitude): for PCM students, and it opens every B.Tech programme.
  • BPCEA (Biology in place of Maths): for PCB students, and it opens only the biology linked B.Tech programmes such as Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Health Sciences and Technology.

Scores from JEE Main or SAT are not used for this route.

VITEEE exam pattern and marking scheme

Latest VITEEE pattern (MPCEA and BPCEA)
SectionQuestionsSection timerMaximum marks
Mathematics (MPCEA) or Biology (BPCEA)4050 minutes160
Physics2530 minutes100
Chemistry2530 minutes100
English510 minutes together20
Aptitude520
Total1002 hours400

The marks column simply multiplies questions by 4; VIT states the per question marks rather than a printed total. The minus 1 rule means a blind guess on a four option question has an expected value close to zero, so guess only when you can strike out at least one option. Questions marked for review but not answered score nothing.

VIT can change the number of questions or the timers between cycles. Recheck the admission guidelines on viteee.vit.ac.in each cycle before locking your timetable.

What changed in the VIT exam pattern recently

The paper has moved in two steps. For years the VIT exam pattern was 125 questions over 150 minutes with 1 mark each and no penalty for wrong answers. VIT then kept the 125 questions but switched to plus 4 and minus 1 marking. In the latest cycle the paper was cut to 100 questions lasting 2 hours; the Physics and Chemistry counts fell to 25 each, Aptitude fell to 5, and section timers arrived.

The timers matter more than the question cut. You can no longer bank time from an easy Chemistry section and spend it on Maths. VIT also reworked the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics lists, adding some topics and trimming others, so check the new subject files rather than an old printout.

VITEEE syllabus for Mathematics and Biology

Mathematics (MPCEA)

The maths syllabus of VITEEE sits on Class 11 and 12 content. Units in the revised list include:

  • Matrices and their applications, including determinants and systems of equations
  • Algebra topics such as cubic and biquadratic equations, and linear programming in two variables
  • Trigonometry and complex numbers
  • Two and three dimensional analytical geometry and vector algebra
  • Differential calculus, including rate of change problems
  • Integral calculus and its applications, including indefinite integrals
  • Ordinary differential equations, including Bernoulli type equations
  • Probability and statistics, including mean, median, mode and spread of data
  • Discrete mathematics: binary operations, permutations and combinations, logic

Biology (BPCEA)

  • Taxonomy, biodiversity, ecology and environment
  • Cell and molecular biology, biochemistry
  • Reproduction, genetics and evolution
  • Plant physiology and human physiology
  • Human health and diseases
  • Biotechnology and its applications

Topic names here follow the subject files and recent reports; the full VIT exam syllabus, with every subtopic, sits in a separate PDF for each subject on the official site.

Physics, Chemistry, English and Aptitude units

Physics

The revised Physics syllabus is grouped into units and measurements, kinematics and Newtonian dynamics, work, energy and momentum, rotational dynamics and gravitation, mechanical properties of matter, oscillations and waves, thermal physics, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic waves, optics, modern physics and electronics (diodes, solar cells, logic gates).

Chemistry

Chemistry now runs across physical chemistry (thermodynamics, equilibrium, kinetics, electrochemistry, colloids), analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, coordination and material chemistry (crystal field theory, solid state, band theory), basic organic principles with functional group compounds, and a final block on carboxylic acids, nitrogen compounds, biomolecules and polymers.

English and Aptitude

  • English: short passages or a poem with questions, grammar and usage, vocabulary and pronunciation.
  • Aptitude: data interpretation, data sufficiency, syllogisms, number series, coding and decoding, clocks, calendars and directions.

Where your marks come from

Simple arithmetic shapes the priorities. Maths or Biology alone is 160 of 400 marks, so 40 percent of your score sits in one section with a 50 minute clock, which gives you about 75 seconds a question. Physics and Chemistry each allow 72 seconds a question. English and Aptitude are only 40 marks together, but they are quick marks if you have practised series and coding patterns.

Because only one attempt is allowed and the rank decides your branch, accuracy beats speed. Ten wrong guesses wipe out the marks of two and a half correct answers.

Aditya has five months left and is strong in Chemistry but slow in calculus. Under the old pattern he would finish Chemistry early and spend the extra time on Maths. Now that each section is locked, he practises 40 question Maths sets against a 50 minute timer three times a week and keeps Chemistry practice short and frequent.

A study plan built for section timers

  1. Months 1 to 2: finish NCERT Class 11 and 12 chapters in Maths (or Biology), Physics and Chemistry, ticking each unit against the VIT subject files.
  2. Month 3: add the topics VIT lists that your board may not stress, such as discrete mathematics, statistics and newer Physics electronics topics.
  3. Month 4: timed section drills. Do each section with its own clock, never as one long paper.
  4. Last month: full mocks in the order of the real test, the VIT mock test when it opens, and a log of every negative mark you lost.

For books, NCERT textbooks and the official syllabus files are enough for most of the paper; add one standard question bank per subject for practice.

Cut off and qualifying marks

Searches for the VITEEE exam pattern and cutoff often expect a fixed pass mark. VIT does not print a cut off score in the admission guidelines. Candidates below its minimum are shown as Not Qualified and cannot join counselling; everyone else gets a rank, and seats in each programme and campus fill in rank order, so popular branches at Vellore close at much better ranks than others. Any predicted closing score you come across is only a guess, not an official figure.

Frequently asked questions

Is there negative marking in VITEEE?

Yes. VIT adds 4 marks for every right response and subtracts 1 for every incorrect response, while skipped items and those left only marked for review count as zero.

How many questions are in VITEEE now?

The latest paper has 100 questions in 2 hours: 40 in Maths or Biology, 25 each in Physics and Chemistry, and 5 each in English and Aptitude. Older guides that mention 125 questions describe the previous pattern.

Can I move between sections during the test?

Each section has a fixed time limit, so plan to finish a section within its own clock. Read the on screen instructions on test day for how navigation works in your shift.

Can a PCB student take VITEEE?

Yes, through the BPCEA paper, which replaces Maths with Biology. It leads only to selected biology linked B.Tech programmes, so read the programme list in the prospectus before you choose.

What Class 12 percentage does VITEEE require?

General candidates need a 60 percent aggregate across the three core science subjects of their stream, with at least 50 percent in Maths or Biology. SC and ST candidates and those from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and the north eastern states need 50 percent. See JEE Main eligibility if you are comparing entrances.

Does VIT set a maximum age for VITEEE?

The latest admission guidelines set no age limit. Eligibility is tied to the year you pass Class 12 instead, so check which passing years are allowed for your cycle.
