The CISF syllabus for posts the force recruits directly, such as Constable Tradesman, Constable Fire and Head Constable (Ministerial), centres on a 100 question objective paper worth 100 marks with general knowledge, elementary maths, reasoning and Hindi or English, set at Class 10 or Class 12 level. For most of these posts the paper comes only after you pass the physical tests and document check, so fitness decides who even sits the exam.
Not every CISF job has its own exam. Constable GD posts come through the SSC GD exam, Sub Inspector posts through SSC CPO, and Assistant Commandant through UPSC CAPF. This page explains the direct CISF exam syllabus post by post, the physical standards, the typing test for clerical posts, and how to plan for a paper that arrives after the running track.

How the CISF written paper is built
Going by recent constable advertisements, you get a single objective sheet carrying 100 items at a mark apiece, with two hours to finish. Questions are in Hindi and English. For Constable Fire the split has been reported as follows.
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning (general intelligence) | 25 | 25 |
| GK and awareness | 25 | 25 |
| Elementary Mathematics | 25 | 25 |
| English or Hindi | 25 | 25 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
The minimum marks reported for this test were 35 percent for UR, EWS and ex-servicemen and 33 percent for SC, ST and OBC. The Constable Tradesman paper covers general awareness, elementary maths, analytical aptitude, observation and Hindi or English, but the section split has not been published in the sources we could check.
CISF syllabus subject by subject
General awareness
- Indian history, with extra weight on the years of the national movement
- Rivers, states, neighbours and world landmarks; the Constitution, Parliament and rights
- Prizes, writers, games, notable days, budget and banking basics
- News of the past year from India and other countries, plus science seen in daily life
Elementary mathematics
- Whole numbers, factors, multiples, fractions and decimal working
- Percent sums, ratios, mean values, shopkeeper sums on profit and discount
- interest, both simple and compound, workers finishing jobs together, speed of trains and vehicles
- Areas and volumes of common shapes, reading a small table or graph
Reasoning and analytical aptitude
- Pairs that match, the odd one out, series of digits or letters, codes
- Figure series, mirror and water image items, finishing an incomplete picture
- Directions, relations, statements and conclusions, plus observation items where you spot what differs between two pictures
Hindi or English
- Meanings and opposites, phrases and idioms, single words for long expressions
- Error finding, picking a word that fits a blank, a short passage with questions
Head Constable (Ministerial) paper and typing test
The clerical HC post uses a paper of the same size at Class 12 level: 25 questions each on general intelligence, general knowledge, arithmetic and English or Hindi, 100 marks in all. The duration has been reported as 120 minutes. Candidates who pass it then take a qualifying typing test on a computer.
- English typing: 35 words per minute, equal to 10,500 key depressions per hour
- Hindi typing: 30 words per minute, equal to 9,000 key depressions per hour
ASI (Steno) has a shorthand test instead of typing. The physical standards test and document check come before the paper for both posts. Similar clerical posts in other forces are covered in the BSF HCM syllabus.
Physical standards and efficiency test
These were the standards in a recent Constable Tradesman notice for general category candidates. Relaxations apply to some regions and communities.
| Standard | Male candidates | Female candidates |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum height | 170 cm | 157 cm |
| Chest | 80 to 85 cm, 5 cm expansion | Not applicable |
| Race | 1.6 km in 6 min 30 s | 800 m in 4 min |
Constable Fire has a tougher test for men: a 5 km run within 24 minutes. No marks come from the PET, yet a single failed run sends you home before you see the question paper, so give it as much time as the books.
Eligibility at a glance
- Constable Tradesman: Class 10 pass; age 18 to 23 in the latest notice; a trade test checks skill in your trade, such as cook, barber or washerman.
- Constable Fire: Class 12 pass with science; age 18 to 23.
- Head Constable (Ministerial): Class 12 pass; check the age band in the notice.
Age bands, relaxations and the reference date for your age are revised each time CISF advertises, so copy them from your own advertisement. For similar paramilitary posts, compare the CRPF syllabus.
A ten week plan that puts fitness first
- Weeks 1 to 4: run five mornings a week, building to 2 km at a steady pace for tradesman or 5 km for fire. Evenings: maths basics and one GK topic.
- Weeks 5 to 7: timed runs twice a week; reasoning sets, especially non-verbal figures, and grammar practice in your chosen language.
- Weeks 8 to 10: sit complete mock papers against a two hour clock, mark answers on a printed OMR sheet, and revise recent news month by month.
