The BSF HCM syllabus rests on a single 100 mark objective paper, cut into five blocks of 20 questions: Hindi or English language, general intelligence, numerical aptitude, clerical aptitude and basic computer knowledge. Clear it, and you face a computer typing test, which is where many otherwise good candidates slip.
Head Constable (Ministerial) is the clerical cadre of the Border Security Force, so the paper tests office skills more than general knowledge. Below are the pattern, the topics in each part, the typing speeds then close with the key points again in Hindi.

Selection stages for BSF Head Constable (Ministerial)
The recruitment moves through a fixed set of checks, though the order has varied between notices.
- Physical standard test and documents: your height is taken, plus chest size if you are a male applicant. In the most recent cycle this round was held before the written test.
- Written test: the 100 mark objective paper explained below. Merit is drawn from these marks.
- Typing test: qualifying only, on a computer.
- Papers check and medical fitness come last, ahead of the final list.
Reports put the height bar for men at 165 cm and for women at 155 cm, relaxed for listed hill and north eastern communities and ST applicants. Male applicants need 77 cm chest, expanding to 82 cm, with one centimetre less allowed for ST.
BSF HCM exam pattern
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Hindi or English language | 20 | 20 |
| II | General intelligence | 20 | 20 |
| III | Numerical aptitude | 20 | 20 |
| IV | Clerical aptitude | 20 | 20 |
| V | Basic computer knowledge | 20 | 20 |
| Total (1 hour 40 minutes) | 100 | 100 | |
Questions come in Hindi and English. Recent cycles reportedly took away 0.25 mark per incorrect response, so a guess is only worth it when you can strike out two options. To stay in the merit list you must reach the minimum: OBC, SC and ST applicants need 33 percent, while UR and EWS applicants need 35.
Language part: Hindi or English
You attempt one language. Pick the one you read faster in, not the one you think looks better.
English
- Spotting errors and sentence improvement
- Synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and spellings
- Idioms, phrases, one word for many
- Changing voice and narration
- Jumbled sentences, cloze test and a short comprehension
Hindi
- Varnamala, sangya, sarvanam, visheshan, kriya and kaal
- Ling, vachan, karak, upsarg and pratyay
- Vilom and paryayvachi words, lokoktiyan, muhavare
- Ras, alankar, well known poets and Hindi literary awards
General intelligence and numerical aptitude
General intelligence covers verbal and non-verbal reasoning: analogy, classification, number and letter series, coding, Venn diagrams, space orientation, embedded figures, paper folding and cutting, and simple problem solving.
Numerical aptitude stays near class 10 level:
- Number system, fractions, decimals, square roots
- Percentage, ratio, average, partnership
- Interest, profit, loss and discount
- Basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry
- Mensuration of plane and solid figures
- Reading tables and charts
Clerical aptitude and basic computer knowledge
These two parts suit the desk job you are applying for, and they are the most scoring if you practise them.
Clerical aptitude: alphabetical filing and arrangement of names, comparing two lists for mismatches, checking figures and spellings, spotting errors in addresses and codes, and attention to detail tasks.
Basic computer knowledge: how a computer is built and how it evolved, devices for input and output, storage, operating systems and Windows basics, MS Word and Excel functions, shortcut keys, common abbreviations, internet, email and network basics.
Typing test for HCM candidates
Nobody gets marks for the skill test, yet missing the speed knocks you out whatever your written score.
- English: at least 35 words per minute (10,500 key depressions per hour)
- Hindi: at least 30 words per minute (9,000 key depressions per hour)
- Duration: 10 minutes on a computer
Start typing practice in the first week of preparation, not after the written result. Fifteen minutes of timed passages every day for three months is usually enough to cross the bar with a margin. ASI (Stenographer), recruited in the same notice, has a shorthand test instead.
Twelve weeks to the BSF written paper
- Weeks 1 to 3: grammar of your chosen language and arithmetic basics. Begin daily typing.
- Weeks 4 to 6: reasoning question types and computer fundamentals. Do 50 clerical items a day.
- Weeks 7 to 9: sectional tests of 20 questions in about 20 minutes each, checking accuracy against the 0.25 penalty.
- Weeks 10 to 12: two complete mock papers each week inside the 1 hour 40 minute limit, with revision of weak parts.
Class 9 and 10 NCERT maths books cover the numerical part. For computer awareness, practise on a real computer: shortcuts are easier to remember once you have used them. Applying to other forces too?
