  1. Paper I
  2. PST and PET
  3. Paper II
  4. Medical exam

Sub-Inspector exam: Paper I, physical tests, then a four part Paper II

SSC CPO syllabus: revised Paper I and Paper II

SSC and centralGraduate levelSub-InspectorUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The SSC CPO syllabus now has a short Paper I of 100 questions split equally across reasoning, current and static GK, maths and English, followed by physical tests and then a longer Paper II that again covers all four subjects but gives English half the weight. Reports of the new scheme say Paper II marks, plus any NCC bonus, decide your final merit, so check that rule in the notice.

This exam recruits Sub-Inspectors for Delhi Police and the Central Armed Police Forces (BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP and SSB), and the latest notice added 234 Sub-Inspector (Fire) posts in CISF, open to men only. The pattern was rebuilt in the newest cycle, so tables from older guides with a 200 question Paper I and an English only Paper II are out of date.

SSC CPO SI syllabus starts with these selection steps

  1. Paper I: a one hour computer based test that shortlists candidates for the physical round.
  2. Physical Standard Test and Physical Endurance Test: height and chest measurement, then running, jumps and (for men) shot put. These are pass or fail.
  3. Paper II: a longer online paper of 120 minutes that settles your rank.
  4. Detailed medical examination: eyesight, colour vision and general fitness, with a review medical if you are declared unfit.

Force allocation follows the option form collected after the Paper II result. For ties, reports point to total Paper II marks first; the full tie break order is printed in the notice.

SSC CPO tier 1 exam pattern (Paper I)

Paper I is now half its old size. Each part has its own 15 minute timer. Except English, every part is offered bilingually.

Paper I, as per the latest notice reports
PartQuestionsMarksSectional time
General Intelligence and Reasoning252515 min
General Knowledge and General Awareness252515 min
Quantitative Aptitude252515 min
English Comprehension252515 min
Paper I1001001 hour

A wrong answer here costs 0.25 of a mark. Paper I marks are reported not to count in the final merit, but you need a good enough rank to be called for the physical round.

SSC CPO tier 2 exam pattern (Paper II)

The CPO tier 2 exam pattern, often searched as the CPO mains pattern, was redesigned. It is no longer only English.

Paper II, latest reported scheme
PartQuestionsMarksSectional time
Reasoning204020 min
General Awareness204020 min
Quantitative Aptitude204020 min
English Language and Comprehension10020060 min
Paper II1603202 hours

Every item here is worth 2 marks, so a wrong attempt takes 0.50 away. To stay in the race you reportedly need 30 percent in each paper as a UR candidate, 25 percent as OBC or EWS, and 20 percent in the remaining categories.

The section timers, the two hour total for Paper II and the qualifying percentages come from reports of the newest notice, and some reports print a different total time. Confirm them in the official SSC CPO notification before you plan mock tests.

Topic list for every subject

General intelligence and reasoning

Verbal and non verbal questions: analogies, spotting what is alike or different, odd one out, series (semantic, number and figural), coding and decoding, word building, Venn diagrams, statement and conclusion, syllogism, space visualisation and orientation, paper folding and cutting, embedded and completed figures, indexing and matching addresses, dates or codes, critical thinking and questions on emotional and social intelligence.

General knowledge and awareness

Current events, everyday science, and India and its neighbours, especially history, culture, geography, economic scene, general polity and the Constitution, and scientific research.

SSC CPO maths syllabus

  • Arithmetic: whole numbers, decimals and fractions, percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, interest of both kinds, discount with profit and loss, partnership, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work.
  • Algebra: identities taught in school, basic surds, and plotting straight line equations.
  • Geometry: centres of a triangle, similar and congruent figures, chords and tangents of circles, four sided figures and regular polygons.
  • Mensuration: surface area and volume of the cuboid, cylinder, cone, pyramid, prism, sphere and hemisphere.
  • Trigonometry: ratios, degree and radian, standard identities, complementary angles, heights and distances.
  • Data interpretation: histogram, frequency polygon, bar diagram and pie chart.

SSC CPO English syllabus

Error recognition, filling blanks with verbs, prepositions and articles, vocabulary and spelling, grammar and sentence structure, synonyms and antonyms, sentence completion, phrases and idioms, and reading comprehension. Paper II goes deeper into the same areas with 100 questions.

Physical standards you must meet

The PET is the same for every post. Ex-servicemen are exempt from the PET but must clear the PST.

Physical endurance test
EventMenWomen
Sprint100 m in 16 seconds100 m in 18 seconds
Distance run1.6 km in 6.5 minutes800 m in 4 minutes
Long jump3.65 m2.7 m
High jump1.2 m0.9 m
Shot put (16 lb)4.5 mNot required

Most male candidates need a height of 170 cm and most women 157 cm, with lower limits for hill area candidates and Scheduled Tribes, and a chest of 80 cm unexpanded with 5 cm expansion for most male candidates. Every category's numbers are on the SSC CPO eligibility page.

Splitting your study time

Because Paper II gives English 200 of 320 marks, this exam now rewards strong English more than any other SSC graduate level paper. Yet Paper I, where all four subjects weigh equally, is the gate to the physical round.

  • Build grammar and vocabulary every single day from the start; it pays in both papers.
  • In maths, give priority to arithmetic and data, then geometry and trigonometry, since Paper II has only 20 maths questions.
  • Keep current affairs short and steady; it is 25 questions in Paper I and 20 in Paper II.
  • Start running from week one. The 1.6 km run in 6.5 minutes cuts many otherwise good candidates.
Rohit scores well in maths but struggles with English. With five months before Paper I, he gives English 90 minutes every morning (one comprehension passage, 20 error spotting questions and 15 new words), and does maths and reasoning mocks in the evening. Four days a week he is on the track at dawn, and each Sunday he times a full 1.6 km.

SSC CPO syllabus in Hindi

A short summary for readers looking for cpo syllabus in hindi, including the cpo si syllabus:

Frequently asked questions

Has the SSC CPO exam pattern changed?

Yes. Paper I fell from 200 to 100 questions and one hour, Paper II now has reasoning, awareness and maths along with English for 320 marks, negative marking in Paper II rose to 0.50, and Paper I is reported to work only as a screening paper.

Which paper decides the final SSC CPO merit?

Reports of the new scheme say Paper II, plus any NCC bonus marks, decides it. Paper I simply decides who gets called to the physical round. Confirm the merit rule in the official notice.

What is the SSC CPO maths syllabus?

Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry and reading of charts and graphs, at roughly class 10 level. The same topics are tested in both papers, with 25 questions in Paper I and 20 in Paper II.

Is the CPO SI exam pattern the same for Delhi Police and CAPF posts?

Yes. All posts share the same papers and PET. Height, chest, licence and age rules differ by post and category, so go through each post's rules in the notice.

Is Paper II taken before or after the physical test?

The listed order is Paper I, then PST and PET, then Paper II, then the medical exam. Only those who pass the physical tests are expected to sit Paper II; the official calendar will confirm the dates.

Can I use glasses in the SSC CPO medical?

The reported standard is 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye without correction, and the notice treats glasses or corrective surgery as not allowed. Confirm the medical rules in the latest notification.
