CRPF Syllabus: Constable Written Test, Physical Test and Trade Test

Defence and police10th pass levelCentral armed policeUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The CRPF syllabus for constable technical and tradesman posts is a single computer based paper built on four blocks, namely reasoning, GK with current awareness, basic maths and a language part in English or Hindi, pitched at roughly class 10 standard. Passing the CBT is only part of the journey, because the force also checks your height and chest, your running time and, for most trades, your practical skill.

Not every CRPF job comes through the force's own recruitment. General duty constables are picked through the Staff Selection Commission, and officers through UPSC. Read on for the paper the CRPF itself conducts, then shows which other syllabus you need for each kind of post.

Which CRPF exam are you preparing for

Aspirants often say "CRPF exam" when they mean very different tests. Sorting this out first saves you weeks of reading the wrong topics.

CRPF constable exam pattern

The table follows the scheme printed in the last CRPF notice for technical and tradesman constables.

CRPF constable (technical and tradesmen) CBT
Section of the CBTItemsMaximum score
Part A, reasoning and intelligence2525
Part B, GK and awareness2525
Part C, basic maths2525
Part D, language (English or Hindi)2525
Whole paper100100
  • You get 2 hours for the whole paper, with no separate clock for each part.
  • Each correct answer gives 1 mark. Every incorrect choice pulls 0.25 off your total, which means blind guessing among four options gains you nothing over time.
  • The paper is bilingual, Hindi plus English. Calculators and other gadgets are not allowed.
  • When the CBT runs in several shifts, scores may be normalised before the merit list is drawn.
The CRPF may revise question counts, minimum marks or languages in any new advertisement. Match this table against the scheme in the notice on the official recruitment site before you plan.

Physical standards and the running test

Many candidates lose out here rather than in the CBT, so treat the physical tests as a full stage. The figures below were set in the last technical and tradesman notice.

Physical standard test (general candidates)
MeasureMaleFemale
Height170 cm157 cm
Chest80 cm normal, with 5 cm or more expansionNo chest test
Physical efficiency test
GroupMaleFemale

Cook, water carrier, barber, washerman, safai karmachari and similar trades1.6 km race, 10 minute limit1.6 km race, 12 minute limit
Pioneer wing posts such as mason and electrician1.6 km race, 9 minute limitCheck the notice

Height and chest relaxations exist for Scheduled Tribes, people from the north eastern states, Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Dogras, Marathas and candidates from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, among others. The exact list and values sit in the notice. The trade test for your trade is qualifying too: it checks hands on skill, and the score you earn there never enters the merit ranking.

Who can apply

  • Education: you must have passed class 10 (matriculation). Some trades ask for more; the motor mechanic post wanted an ITI course plus work experience, and drivers needed a heavy vehicle licence.
  • Age: 18 to 23 years for most trades and 21 to 27 years for drivers, as per the last notice.
  • Relaxation: upper age goes up by 5 years for SC or ST candidates and by 3 years for OBC, with separate rules for ex servicemen.
  • Pay: Level 3 of the pay matrix, Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100.

Women and men are both eligible, and selected constables serve wherever the force sends them across the country.

Preparation plan built around the four sections

Since each part carries 25 marks, no single subject can rescue a weak one. Build steady scores across all four, then keep your running in shape alongside.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: revise class 6 to 10 NCERT maths for percentages, ratio, interest and mensuration. Solve 20 sums a day by hand, since no calculator is allowed.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: add daily reasoning sets on series, coding and figure questions, which reward speed more than theory.
  3. Throughout: read one newspaper daily and note sports, awards and government schemes for the GK part. Pick either English or Hindi early and drill grammar in that language only.
  4. Last month: attempt full 2 hour mocks and keep a list of questions you guessed wrongly, so the quarter mark penalty does not eat into your score.
Sunil, who assists at a two wheeler repair shop, wants the mechanic post. He studies maths and reasoning for an hour before work, runs 3 km every evening, building up towards 5 km in under 24 minutes, and sets aside each Sunday morning for one timed mock. His trade skill is already strong, so he spends almost no time on the trade test.

Where to read the official CRPF notice

The force posts every recruitment advertisement, admit card and result on its recruitment portal. For GD constable posts, the notice appears on the Staff Selection Commission website instead. Download the notice of your own cycle and mark the scheme of exam, the PST table and the trade list, since these change more often than the topics do. For other forces and police exams, browse our defence and police hub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CRPF ka syllabus for the constable written test?

The technical and tradesman CBT is split into four equal parts that test reasoning, GK, basic arithmetic and one language of your choice. Every part holds 25 one mark questions, set at a matriculation standard.

Are marks deducted for incorrect CRPF CBT answers?

Yes. As per the last notice, each incorrect response takes away 0.25 marks. Leaving a question blank carries no penalty.

Is the CRPF GD syllabus the same as this one?

No. GD constables are recruited through the SSC GD exam, which has its own pattern of 80 questions for 160 marks in 60 minutes. Study the SSC GD syllabus if you are aiming for general duty.

What is the running test in CRPF for men?

For technical trades in the last notice, men had to run 5 km in 24 minutes. For trades such as cook, barber and washerman, they had 10 minutes to cover 1.6 km. Ex servicemen were exempt from the PET.

Do trade test marks count in the CRPF merit list?

No. The trade test is qualifying only. You must pass it, and only CBT marks decide where you stand.

Can I write the CRPF CBT in Hindi?

Yes. Questions come in both languages, and in Part D you choose whether to answer the English block or the Hindi block.
