The BSF tradesman syllabus for the Constable (Tradesman) written test is split into four blocks of 25 questions: general awareness, elementary mathematics, analytical aptitude and basic English or Hindi, for 100 marks in 2 hours, all pitched at class 10 level. The written paper is only one of five hurdles, because you also face a height check, a timed run, a trade test in your chosen trade and a medical.
Tradesmen are the cooks, tailors, barbers, cobblers, washermen, sweepers, carpenters, plumbers and other skilled staff who keep Border Security Force units running. This page walks through the paper, what each of its four parts asks, the height and running norms used in the most recent drive, how trades are tested, and closes with a Hindi recap.

The order of selection for Constable (Tradesman)
BSF has changed the sequence of rounds between notices. In the most recent recruitment the physical rounds came first, and the stages were reported in this order:
- Physical Standard Test (PST): your height is taken, and men also have chest size checked.
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET): the timed run, which you either finish within the limit or fail.
- Document verification: age, class 10 certificate, ITI or trade certificates, caste and domicile papers.
- Trade test: you demonstrate practical skill in the trade named on your form. Pass or fail, no marks.
- Written test: the 100 mark paper that decides merit.
- Detailed medical examination; anyone found unfit can ask for a review medical.
Because merit comes from the written score, you need both: fitness to survive the early rounds and enough marks to rank inside the vacancies for your trade and state.
BSF tradesman exam pattern and marks per part
| Part | What it checks | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | General awareness and general knowledge | 25 | 25 |
| B | Elementary mathematics | 25 | 25 |
| C | Analytical aptitude, spotting and telling apart patterns | 25 | 25 |
| D | Basic knowledge of English or Hindi | 25 | 25 |

You get over sixty seconds for each item, a generous allowance for class 10 level items, so accuracy matters more than speed. The merit list only includes candidates who reach 35% (unreserved, EWS, ex-servicemen) or 33% (SC, ST, OBC).

Physical standards and running test
| Measure | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 165 cm | 155 cm |
| Chest | 75 cm, expanding to 80 cm | Not applicable |
| Timed race | 5 km inside 24 minutes | 1.6 km inside 8.5 minutes |
Lower heights apply to Scheduled Tribe candidates and to listed hill, north eastern and other regions. The full relaxation table runs to many rows, so look up your own community and state in the notice.
Trade test and trade wise qualification
No marks are given for the trade test. It exists so the force knows a recruit can genuinely work in the trade, for example cut and stitch a garment as a tailor, cook a basic meal as a cook or give a haircut as a barber. Recent reports say a few posts, cook, water carrier and waiter among them, were cleared on a valid certificate instead of a separate test, but treat your own notice as final. You can apply for one trade only.
- Carpenter, plumber, painter, electrician, pump operator, upholsterer: class 10 pass plus a two year ITI in the trade, or a one year ITI or vocational course with a year of experience.
- Cobbler, tailor, washerman, barber, sweeper, cook, waiter, water carrier and similar: class 10 pass and proficiency in the trade.
Unreserved applicants must fall within 18 to 25 years on the counting date BSF announces, and reserved and listed categories receive the upper age concessions given in the notice.
A ten week plan that fits around physical training
Most of your early energy goes into running, so keep the written study light but daily.
- Weeks 1 to 3: run in the morning; in the evening revise class 8 to 10 maths chapters on percentage, ratio, interest and mensuration.
- Weeks 4 to 6: one reasoning topic a day with 30 practice items, and 15 minutes of current affairs from a daily newspaper.
- Weeks 7 to 8: language grammar for whichever of English or Hindi you will attempt, plus static GK on India's geography and polity.
- Weeks 9 to 10: full 100 question papers in 2 hours, twice a week, then go over every mistake.
For BSF general awareness, NCERT texts from middle school onwards in civics, history, geography and science answer most general awareness items this paper sets. Keep practising your trade too, because a weak trade test ends the process before the written score is counted.
