The IIT JAM syllabus is set separately for seven test papers: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics, each pitched at bachelor's degree level. Whatever paper you choose, the format is identical: one sitting of three hours on a computer, with 60 questions worth 100 marks, split into multiple choice, multiple select and numerical answer sections.
JAM, the Joint Admission Test for Masters, opens the door to M.Sc., joint M.Sc. and Ph.D., integrated Ph.D. and similar programmes at the IITs, and its score is also used by IISc, NITs and several other institutes. This guide sets out the marking scheme, the core units of every paper and a revision plan shaped by them.

What JAM tests and who takes it
JAM is a single stage entrance. For IIT seats nothing else follows the test, neither an interview nor another paper: admission follows from your JAM score, the eligibility rules of the admitting institute and the counselling process. The 23 IITs together offer around 3,000 postgraduate seats through JAM, and more than 2,000 further seats at other institutes are filled using shared JAM scores through a separate counselling.
You may sit one paper or two. Two papers are possible only if they fall in different sessions on exam day. Recent brochures place Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics in the morning session and Biotechnology, Economics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics in the afternoon, so a Mathematics plus Mathematical Statistics pairing works, while Physics plus Mathematical Statistics does not. Confirm the session chart in the current brochure before you pick.
IIT JAM marking scheme and paper pattern
| Section | Question type | Questions | Marks | Wrong answer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | MCQ, one correct option, 1 mark | 10 | 10 | Minus 1/3 |
| MCQ, one correct option, 2 marks | 20 | 40 | Minus 2/3 | |
| B | MSQ, one or more correct options, 2 marks | 10 | 20 | No penalty, no partial credit |
| C | Numerical answer, 1 mark | 10 | 10 | No penalty |
| Numerical answer, 2 marks | 10 | 20 | No penalty | |
| Total | 60 | 100 | ||
Only half the paper, 50 marks in Section A, can cost you marks. In Section B you must mark every correct option and nothing else to earn the 2 marks, so a near miss gives zero. In Section C you type the number on a virtual keypad, which means no guessing from options.
IIT JAM syllabus for Mathematics, Statistics and Physics
Mathematics (MA)
- Real analysis: sequences, series and convergence tests, power series, limits, continuity, mean value theorems, Taylor's theorem, Riemann integration
- Several variable calculus: partial derivatives, maxima and minima, double and triple integrals, vector calculus
- Differential equations: first order, exact, Bernoulli, second order linear, Cauchy Euler, variation of parameters
- Linear algebra: systems of equations, rank, vector spaces, linear maps, eigenvalues
- Group theory: cyclic and abelian groups, normal subgroups, quotient groups, homomorphisms
Mathematical Statistics (MS)
About a quarter of this paper is mathematics (sequences, series, calculus, matrices) and about three quarters is statistics: probability, univariate and multivariate distributions, limit theorems, sampling distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, non parametric tests, Markov chains and Poisson processes.
Physics (PH)
- Mathematical methods, mechanics and properties of matter
- Oscillations, waves and optics
- Electricity and magnetism up to Maxwell's equations
- Kinetic theory, thermodynamics and basic statistical distributions
- Modern physics: relativity, quantum basics, atomic and nuclear physics
- Solid state physics and electronics, including op amps and digital logic
Chemistry, Biotechnology, Economics and Geology topics
Chemistry (CY)
Basic mathematics for chemists, then physical chemistry (atomic structure, states of matter, thermodynamics, equilibria, electrochemistry, kinetics, spectroscopy), organic chemistry (mechanisms, stereochemistry, named reactions, spectral analysis, heterocycles, natural products) and inorganic chemistry (bonding, main group and d block elements, coordination compounds, bioinorganic and analytical chemistry). Read the full breakdown on the IIT JAM chemistry syllabus page.
Biotechnology (BT)
General biology, microbial, plant and animal biotechnology, and lab techniques such as chromatography, electrophoresis, PCR, cloning and bioinformatics, plus chemistry at degree level and mathematics and physics at 10+2 level. Details are on the IIT JAM biotechnology syllabus page.
Economics (EN)
Mathematics for economics including optimisation and linear programming, statistics and regression, microeconomics, macroeconomics with growth models and open economy topics, and the Indian economy.
Geology (GG)
Planet Earth and plate tectonics, geomorphology, structural geology, palaeontology and stratigraphy, mineralogy and petrology, and economic and applied geology.
How to plan your syllabus of IIT JAM revision
Start with the official syllabus PDF of your paper and tick each line against your degree notes. JAM rewards breadth. Every unit is small in your course, but each can supply two or three questions, so a skipped unit is a guaranteed loss.
- Months 1 to 3: finish the theory unit by unit with standard undergraduate textbooks and solve end of chapter problems.
- Month 4: numerical practice. Since 30 marks come from Section C with no options, train yourself to compute final values accurately with an on screen style calculator.
- Month 5: solve the official past papers in three hour sittings and log every error by unit.
- Last month: mock tests, short notes and a rule for Section A: answer a 2 mark MCQ only after eliminating two of its four choices.
Ananya, a third year B.Sc. Physics student, and wants Mathematics as a second paper. She checks the session chart first, finds both papers clash, and drops the plan. Instead she puts the extra hours into electronics and thermodynamics, the two units she scored lowest on in her first mock.
Past papers and official material
The organising IIT publishes past question papers and answer keys for every test paper on the JAM website, along with mock test links that copy the real screen. Use those before any other source, because they show the true mix of MCQ, MSQ and numerical questions. Undergraduate textbooks used in your own university course are enough for theory.
Seat numbers, sessions and the organising IIT change from cycle to cycle. Always read the latest information brochure on the official JAM website before applying.
If you also plan for research or PSU routes later, see the GATE syllabus, and browse other postgraduate and degree tests on the entrance exams hub.
Frequently asked questions
Does IIT JAM have an upper age cap?
No. The brochure sets no age limit and both Indian and foreign nationals can apply. You need an undergraduate degree, either finished or due to finish in the current academic year.
What is the IIT JAM marking scheme for MSQ questions?
Each Section B multiple select question carries 2 marks. The marks come only when your selection matches the key exactly, every right option ticked and none extra. There is no negative or partial marking.
How many papers can I write in JAM?
One or two. A second paper is allowed only when your two choices sit in separate sessions, so check the session chart before you register.
Is a calculator allowed?
Personal calculators are not permitted. A virtual calculator is available on the screen during the test, so practise with one before exam day.
Does the IIT JAM exam syllabus change between cycles?
The syllabus for each paper changes rarely, but the organising IIT can revise it. Download the current version from the official website before you begin.
Do I need minimum marks in graduation for admission?
JAM itself only asks that you hold or are completing a bachelor's degree. The admitting institutes set their own minimum educational qualifications for each programme, listed in the brochure, so check those for your target courses.
