B.Sc (Hons) Nursing CBT: physics, chemistry, biology and GK at class 12 level

AIIMS BSc Nursing Syllabus and Entrance Pattern

EntranceClass 12 PCBCBTUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The AIIMS BSc nursing syllabus for the B.Sc (Hons) Nursing entrance covers physics, chemistry and biology at class 11 and 12 level, plus a small general knowledge section, all asked in a single 100 question online test. Biology, physics and chemistry carry 30 marks each and general knowledge carries 10, so 90 percent of your score comes from the science you studied in senior secondary.

AIIMS New Delhi conducts this exam for the B.Sc (Hons) Nursing seats at the participating AIIMS institutes. There is also a separate B.Sc Nursing (Post Basic) test for diploma holding nurses, described briefly further down. This page is the syllabus of AIIMS BSc nursing in plain terms, the same thing many students search for as the AIIMS BSc nursing ka syllabus; match every figure against the prospectus for your session.

Every right response adds 1, every wrong one subtracts 0.33, and anything left blank or only flagged for review counts as zero. Two hours for 100 items works out to about 72 seconds apiece: plenty for a botany fact, not much for a two-step physics numerical.

AIIMS publishes the pattern, eligibility, qualifying criteria and dates in the prospectus for each session. Read the latest one on the official exams website before you plan.

Physics topics to cover

Mechanics

  • Measurement, units and errors
  • Kinematics in one and two dimensions; Newton's laws and friction
  • Work, energy, power; circular and rotational motion; gravitation
  • Elasticity, pressure in fluids, viscosity, surface tension

Heat, oscillation and waves

  • Heat transfer, the laws of thermodynamics, behaviour of gases
  • Simple harmonic motion, wave motion, sound

Electricity, magnetism and modern physics

  • Charges and fields, capacitors, circuits and Ohm's law
  • Moving charges and magnetism, induction, AC circuits, the EM spectrum
  • Mirrors, lenses and optical instruments; interference and diffraction
  • Photoelectric effect, atomic models, radioactivity, diodes and transistors

Questions here are mostly direct formula use and concept checks rather than long derivations. Keep a one page formula sheet per chapter.

Chemistry topics to cover

Physical chemistry

  • Moles, formulas and balancing; atomic structure and quantum numbers
  • Gas laws, energy changes in reactions, chemical and ionic equilibrium
  • Concentration of solutions, cells and electrolysis, rates of reaction

Inorganic chemistry

  • Periodic trends, types of bonds and molecular shapes, oxidation and reduction
  • Main group elements, transition metals, complexes and their naming

Organic chemistry

  • IUPAC naming, isomerism, reaction mechanisms in simple terms
  • Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and benzene; halogen compounds
  • Oxygen and nitrogen containing compounds, from alcohols to amines
  • Sugars, proteins, vitamins and DNA as molecules

Biology topics to cover

Botany

  • Kingdoms of life, plant groups, the form and internal structure of flowering plants
  • How plants move water and minerals, make food, respire and grow
  • Flowers, pollination and seed formation

Zoology

  • Animal tissues and organ systems, the cell and its division
  • The human body: food processing, lungs, heart and blood, kidneys, muscles and bones, nerves and hormones
  • Human reproduction, contraception and reproductive health
  • Mendel's laws, DNA and gene expression, origin of life
  • Immunity, common diseases, useful microbes
  • Biotech tools and applications; ecosystems, populations and conservation

Human physiology and disease link directly to nursing studies, and aspirants generally find them worth extra attention.

General knowledge: the 10 mark section

The GK part is small but it is the quickest section to answer. Expect questions on current national events, health and medical awareness, the basics of Indian history, geography and the Constitution, important days, and science in daily life. For most candidates, a few minutes a day with the news, plus a list of health schemes and recent medical milestones, covers it. Do not let GK eat time meant for chemistry revision.

A 12 week plan for the AIIMS nursing entrance

  • Weeks 1 to 4: NCERT biology for class 11 and 12, two chapters a day, with diagrams drawn from memory.
  • Weeks 3 to 8: chemistry and physics in parallel, one chapter of each daily, followed by 20 practice questions.
  • Weeks 9 and 10: weak chapters only, guided by your mock scores; begin GK reading.
  • Weeks 11 and 12: full 100 question tests in 120 minutes on a computer, then go back over each question that cost you marks.
Sana, a class 12 student in Lucknow, found she was losing 4 to 5 marks per mock through wrong guesses in physics numericals. She started skipping any numerical where she could not narrow the answer down to two options, and within two weeks she was netting six extra marks without learning anything new.

Since the science content is close to the NEET biology, physics and chemistry syllabus, our NEET syllabus chapter lists work as a checklist too.

B.Sc Nursing (Post Basic) test in brief

The post basic course is meant for registered nurses who have completed the GNM diploma. Its selection has two stages. Stage I is a written test of 70 multiple choice questions for 70 marks in 90 minutes, held in English, with the same one third negative marking. Stage II is a personal assessment worth 30 marks that looks at your academic record and your work as a staff nurse. You must clear both stages. Eligibility, including work experience and registration rules, is set out in the prospectus.

Who can apply for the Hons course

Applicants should have passed senior secondary (class 12) or an equivalent, in which you studied English along with the three sciences, with a minimum aggregate in the science subjects that differs by category, and to meet a minimum age on the cut off date fixed by AIIMS. The exam also has qualifying criteria in the form of a minimum percentile by category. AIIMS revises these numbers from time to time; older summaries online may be out of date. For paramedical courses at AIIMS, see the AIIMS paramedical syllabus, and for an overview of all nursing routes, the AIIMS nursing syllabus page.
