The Bihar SI cut off is the score, out of 200, at which BPSSC, the state's police subordinate services board, stops calling candidates of a category to the next stage, first after the prelims and then after the mains, with separate figures for men and women. In the 1,799 post cycle, news reports put the unreserved male mains cut off at 134, against about 162.6 in the previous 1,275 post recruitment.
Many aspirants call it the Bihar daroga cut off, and the numbers swing a lot between advertisements. Here we bring together the prelims and mains figures we could confirm from more than one report, how the commission sets them, and why the latest cycle needs extra care.

How the Bihar SI cut off is set
BPSSC recruits sub inspectors in three main steps. Prelims means one objective GK and current affairs paper. The mains has two papers: General Hindi, where you only need 30 percent, and General Studies, which alone feeds the merit ranking. A physical efficiency test follows. Paper by paper detail is in our Bihar police syllabus guide.
After the prelims the commission ranks candidates by category and gender and calls roughly 20 times the number of posts to the mains. In the 1,275 post drive about 25,400 cleared the prelims, which matches that ratio. Whoever ranks last within each box sets that box's prelims cut off. A similar ranking after the mains settles the physical test call list.
Nobody is called if they fall under 30 percent, or 60 of the 200 marks. That is why you see 60.0 in some female and reserved cells of older tables: the list had reached the floor.
Bihar SI prelims cut off from past cycles
| Category | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| General | 123.0 | 96.8 |
| BC | 116.4 | 84.2 |
| EBC | 113.2 | 70.2 |
| SC | 101.0 | 60.0 |
| ST | 110.8 | 76.8 |
| EWS | 114.2 | 81.6 |
| BC women (3 percent) | not applicable | 77.4 |
| Wards of freedom fighters | 66.0 | 66.0 |
| Category | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| General | 132.2 | 88.0 |
| BC | 125.2 | 72.6 |
| EBC | 118.6 | 60.0 |
| SC | 103.8 | 60.0 |
| ST | 116.6 | 67.0 |
| EWS | 117.6 | 60.0 |
| BC women | not applicable | 64.2 |
Both tables appear with the same numbers in more than one report of the commission's results. The female figures sit far below the male ones because women have their own reserved share of posts and a smaller pool of applicants. For the 1,275 post and 1,799 post cycles, we could not find a prelims table that two reports agreed on, so we have left them out.

Bihar SI previous year cut off: what the trend shows
- Mains marks in the 01/2023 cycle were very high. General men needed about 81 percent in General Studies, and even SC women needed over 60 percent.
- The 1,799 post cycle closed much lower. With 524 more posts on offer, the unreserved male figure fell to 134, or 67 percent.
- The prelims gap between men and women is wide. In the 03/2020 cycle general women cleared at 96.8, more than 26 marks below general men.
- Category gaps are narrower for men than for women. BC and EBC men usually close within a few marks of general men.
What will decide the next daroga cut off
- Seats on offer. The jump from 1,275 to 1,799 posts is one reason the mains marks fell.
- Applicants. More than ten lakh registered for the 1,799 post prelims and over seven lakh sat it, which keeps the prelims competitive.
- Paper difficulty. A tough General Studies paper pulls every category down together.
- Reservation and women's share. Bihar sets aside a share of posts for women, including a separate BC women quota, so the female lists close at their own level.
A practical target for general men is about 130 or more in prelims and 150 or more in mains General Studies, based on the figures above. Treat it as a planning number, not a forecast.
The 30 percent floor, the prelims list and the mains list
Keep three numbers apart:
- The 30 percent floor. You must reach it in prelims, and in the mains Hindi paper, or you are out.
- The prelims cut off. Far higher than the floor for most categories; this is what gets you a mains seat.
- The mains cut off. Built from General Studies marks; this decides the call to the physical test and, in practice, your final rank.
Physical standards and the running and jumping events then have to be cleared. Constable figures live on a separate Bihar police cut off page, while our defence and police exams overview sets Bihar beside other states.
Checking the BPSSC result and cut off
Every BPSSC result is uploaded as a PDF notice, under the latest notices for your advertisement number, with qualified roll numbers first and a category and gender wise table of closing marks at the end. Marks for individual candidates usually come later through the candidate login.
Always note the advertisement number when you read any cut off, since 01/2023, 05/2025 and older drives have very different figures. Mixing them up is the most common mistake aspirants make when they search for the Bihar SI prelims cut off.
Frequently asked questions
How low can a Bihar SI prelims score go and still pass?
Recent advertisements set the floor at 30 percent, or 60 marks of 200. The actual cut off for a mains call is usually much higher, especially for general men.
Where did the Bihar SI pre cut off land for general men?
Reported figures were 123.0 of 200 for advt 03/2020, with the 2018 drive higher at 132.2. We could not confirm the figures for the two latest drives from more than one source, so check the result notice on bpssc.bihar.gov.in.
Why do women in Bihar SI clear at lower marks?
Women have their own share of posts, including a BC women quota, and fewer women apply. Their lists are ranked separately and so close lower.
Do prelims marks carry into the merit list?
Not at all. Prelims is purely a screening round for the mains. Merit is built from the mains General Studies paper, with the Hindi paper qualifying.
What was the Bihar daroga mains cut off in the 1,799 post cycle?
News reports put the unreserved figures at 134 (men) and 116.2 (women), out of 200. A later report of a cancelled mains sitting means you should check the commission's latest notice before relying on it.
How big is the mains call list?
Roughly twenty candidates per post. In the 1,275 post cycle, around 25,400 candidates cleared the prelims.
