CSBC written test of 100 marks to qualify, then a 100 mark physical test that sets merit

Bihar police constable syllabus and CSBC exam pattern

Defence and police12th passBihar PoliceUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The Bihar police constable syllabus covers a single objective written test of 100 one mark questions drawn from two languages, maths, science, the social sciences and GK, and clearing it needs just 30 percent. After that, your rank is earned on the ground, in a 100 mark PET made of a run, a throw and a jump.

Your study calendar should reflect this split. The written test needs a safe pass, not a top score, while the ground events need months of training. This page lays out the CSBC pattern from the latest constable advertisement, what to study in each subject and how the physical marks are given.

How CSBC selects constables

  1. Written test: an objective OMR paper that you simply need to clear.
  2. PST: body measurements, with every candidate's height taken and men's chest measured too.
  3. PET: a timed run, the shot put and the high jump, together marked out of 100.
  4. Document check and medical examination.

Among those who reach 30 percent, CSBC sends a fixed ratio of candidates to posts, separately for each category, onward to the physical round; reports on the latest advertisement put this at five times the posts. Written marks therefore help you get onto that shortlist, but once you are on the ground they stop mattering. Rank comes from the PET.

No subject has an announced share of the 100 questions, and the mix has moved from paper to paper. Questions sit at school level, broadly matching what you studied up to class 10 and 12. The board posts a syllabus sheet with every advertisement on its website, and it has recently uploaded a new constable syllabus file, so check that file against the topics below.

Physical standards you must meet first

PST for constable (latest advertisement)
CandidateHeightChest (normal and expanded)
Men, general, BC and EBC165 cm81 and 86 cm
Men, SC and ST160 cm79 and 84 cm
Women, all categories155 cmNot measured

For women there is also a 48 kg weight floor. The PST carries no marks; you either meet the standard or you are out, so measure yourself early and honestly.

How the 100 PET marks are given

PET events and marks
EventOut ofMale standardFemale standard
Running501.6 km, at most 6 minutes1 km, at most 5 minutes
Shot put2516 pound ball, 16 feet minimum12 pound ball, 12 feet minimum
High jump254 feet minimum3 feet minimum

Missing the minimum in any event disqualifies you. Above the minimum, marks rise in bands. For men's running, for example, published versions of the latest advertisement award 50 marks for 5 minutes or less, 40 up to 5 minutes 20 seconds, 30 up to 5 minutes 40 seconds and 20 up to 6 minutes. The shot put and high jump also have bands, ending at 25 marks for a throw beyond 20 feet or a jump of 5 feet for men. The women's bands are on the same lines; read them in the advertisement.

Splitting your months between books and the ground

A score of 50 to 60 in the written test is a comfortable target for most candidates and leaves room for a bad day. Class 9 and 10 NCERT books for science and social science, a school level maths practice book and a monthly digest of news are enough to get there.

Ravi from Muzaffarpur has five months. He studies two hours after his morning run, taking maths and Hindi on alternate days and science with GK on the rest, and solves one old CSBC paper every Sunday. His 1.6 km time is 6 minutes 30 seconds at the start, so he adds two interval sessions a week. By month four he runs under 5 minutes 40 seconds and starts weekly shot put practice at the local ground.

The same body also recruits for other constable posts with their own syllabus files, and the sub inspector exam is run separately. Compare all of them on our Bihar police syllabus page, and see past written and PET marks on the Bihar police cut off page. Trying other states as well? Much of this list repeats in the UP police constable syllabus, while every force we cover is grouped in one police and defence hub.

Each new CSBC notice may revise height, chest, PET bands, age relaxation or the subjects. Go through your own cycle's notice before you train or buy books.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything deducted for errors in the Bihar police constable exam?

No. Under the latest CSBC pattern nothing is deducted, so fill a bubble against each of the 100 items. Leaving blanks only lowers your chance of crossing 30 marks.

Does my written score decide my final rank?

No. The written test is qualifying. After you cross 30 percent and make the shortlist for the physical stage, merit is decided by your PET marks out of 100.

Which age band applies for Bihar police constable?

In the latest advertisement, general category candidates had to be 18 to 25. BC and EBC men got up to 27, BC and EBC women up to 28, and SC, ST and transgender candidates up to 30, with age counted on the date the notice specifies.

What level are the questions in the written test?

They are school level, roughly the standard of classes 10 to 12 in Bihar. Hindi, maths and GK often feel the easiest, while science can include a few tricky factual questions.

How long should I take to run 1.6 km for full marks?

Published versions of the latest notice give the full 50 marks to men who finish in 5 minutes or less. The cut off for qualifying is 6 minutes; anything slower ends your PET.

Where is the official Bihar police constable syllabus posted?

CSBC posts the syllabus with each advertisement under the syllabus section of its website. Pick the file carrying your advertisement number.
