Bihar police syllabus for constable and sub inspector

Defence and police12th pass (constable)PET decides meritUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The Bihar police syllabus for constable is one objective written test of 100 questions on Hindi, English, mathematics, science, social science and general knowledge, which you only need to qualify; your final merit then comes from the physical efficiency test. Sub inspector recruitment is different: it has a prelims and a two paper mains, set by a separate board.

Two bodies recruit for Bihar Police. The Central Selection Board of Constable (CSBC) handles constables, and the Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) handles sub inspectors and sergeants. This page covers both, so you can see which papers apply to the post you want.

Constable selection in four steps

For constables in Bihar Police and Bihar Special Armed Police, the CSBC runs this sequence:

  1. Written test: objective, qualifying only.
  2. Physical standard test (PST): height is checked for all, chest only for male candidates.
  3. Physical efficiency test (PET): running, shot put and high jump for 100 marks, which sets the merit list.
  4. Document verification and medical examination.

This makes the Bihar police exam pattern unusual. Scoring 80 in the written test does not put you ahead of someone who scored 31; what matters after qualifying is how you perform on the ground. Past qualifying and PET cut offs are on our Bihar police cut off page.

In short, bihar police ka syllabus kya hai: a qualifying written test of school level subjects, then a physical test that decides your rank.

A plan that splits time between desk and ground

Since the written test is qualifying, the target is a safe margin above 30, not a top score. Steady revision of class 10 science, maths and social science, plus Bihar GK, normally gets you over the line with room to spare. Most of your gains after that come from running.

Sunil from Gaya has four months before the written test. He studies two hours each morning, rotating maths, science and GK, and works through an old CSBC paper each Sunday. Evenings go to running: he starts at 1.6 km in 7 minutes 40 seconds and works down with interval runs twice a week, while practising shot put at the district stadium on weekends.

Use the board's own past papers and NCERT books for classes 9 and 10. Applying in a neighbouring state too? the UP police constable syllabus overlaps in GK and maths, though there the written score counts for merit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CSBC deduct marks for incorrect answers?

No, the latest CSBC constable written test has no negative marking. Attempt every question, since a blank earns nothing. The SI exam is different and deducts 0.2 mark per wrong answer.

How many marks are needed to pass the constable written test?

You need 30 percent, which is 30 out of 100. Your written score is then set aside, and the PET alone ranks you.

Up to which age can I apply as a Bihar police constable?

The latest advertisement sets 18 to 25 years for general category candidates, 27 for BC and EBC men, 28 for BC and EBC women, and 30 for SC and ST. Each fresh CSBC notice prints the reference date for age.

Which qualification is needed?

Constable needs intermediate (12th) or an equivalent recognised by the Bihar government. Sub inspector needs a graduate degree.

Does the written test have questions on Bihar?

Yes. Questions on Bihar history, geography, rivers, districts and state schemes appear regularly in the GK and social science part.

Where is the official syllabus published?

The CSBC website carries the constable advertisement with the syllabus and PET rules. The BPSSC website carries the SI advertisement. More police exams are grouped in the police and defence section of this site.
