UPPSC RO ARO Syllabus for Prelims and Mains

Civil servicesGraduate levelNo interviewUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The UPPSC RO ARO syllabus covers two written stages: a prelims of General Studies (140 questions) and General Hindi (60 questions) for 200 marks, and a mains of General Studies, General Hindi with drafting, a vocabulary paper and a Hindi essay for 400 marks. Hindi carries more weight here than in almost any other commission exam, so your language work decides much of the result.

This is the recruitment for Samiksha Adhikari (Review Officer) and Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari (Assistant Review Officer) posts in the UP Secretariat, the Commission and related offices. This guide sets out the ro aro exam pattern, paper-wise topics, the typing condition for ARO posts and a short summary in Hindi. For the commission's bigger exam, see the UPPSC PCS syllabus.

Stages of the RO and ARO recruitment

The selection has no interview. It moves through these steps:

  1. Preliminary exam: one objective sitting with two parts, used to shortlist candidates for mains.
  2. Main exam: four written papers, three of them centred on Hindi.
  3. Typing test: a qualifying Hindi typing test for ARO and similar posts that involve office drafting work.
  4. Document check: before the final appointment list.

For a few specialised posts such as Samiksha Adhikari (Hindi) or (Urdu), an extra translation paper is added at the mains stage. The ro/aro syllabus on paper is one list, yet the advertisement tells you which posts you are applying for, since the paper list changes with the post.

RO ARO exam pattern for prelims

Preliminary exam

General Studies140140
General Hindi6060

Both parts are taken in one sitting of 3 hours (about two hours for GS and one for Hindi in the commonly reported split). A wrong response costs a third of that question's mark, which means three misses erase one hit. Risk an answer on RO ARO prelims items when you have already eliminated a pair of the options.

The Hindi and Urdu review officer posts carry an extra conventional translation paper; reports describe it as 100 marks in 3 hours, but take its marks, time and any qualifying score from the advertisement for those posts.

The question format of mains GS, its number of questions and any negative marking should be read from the advertisement you apply under. Always confirm the pattern on the commission's site before you plan.

General Studies topics (prelims and mains)

The same GS list serves both stages, so one round of preparation covers two papers.

  • General science of everyday life
  • Indian history, along with the freedom struggle
  • Indian polity, economy and culture
  • Indian agriculture, commerce and trade
  • Population, ecology and urbanisation in the Indian context
  • Geography of the world and of India, with natural resources
  • Current national and international events
  • General intelligence and reasoning
  • Special knowledge of Uttar Pradesh: education, culture, agriculture, industry, trade, living and social customs

The UP portion is often decisive. Make a separate notebook for the state's districts, rivers, schemes, folk arts and administrative set-up.

General Hindi, drafting and essay in detail

Prelims General Hindi (60 questions)

  • Vilom (opposites) and paryayvachi (synonyms)
  • Vakya shuddhi (sentence correction)
  • Vakyansh ke liye ek shabd
  • Words of similar use and nature, noun and adjective forms

Mains paper II, part 1 (100 marks)

  • Heading, precis and explanation of underlined parts of a passage
  • Precis of a government letter in a tabular form
  • Official correspondence: official and demi-official letters, office memo, circular, notification, report and reminder
  • Administrative and commercial terms, English to Hindi and Hindi to English
  • Muhavare and lokoktiyan
  • Computer knowledge

Mains paper II, part 2 (60 marks)

Objective vocabulary questions on opposites, sentence correction, one word substitution, words of similar use and words formed from nouns and adjectives.

Mains paper III, Hindi essay (120 marks)

Three sections, each offering a choice of topics: literature, society and politics; science, environment, economy and agriculture; national and international events, disasters and development plans. Pick one topic per section and write about 600 words on it; each essay is marked out of 40.

Where your marks really come from

Add up the mains and you see the pattern: 280 of the 400 marks sit in Hindi papers. A candidate who is average in GS but writes clean drafts and strong essays often finishes ahead of a GS expert with weak Hindi.

  • Drafting formats (letter, memo, circular) follow fixed structures; learn them once and practise them weekly.
  • The vocabulary paper and the prelims Hindi part draw on the same word lists, so revision serves both.
  • In prelims, GS is 70% of the marks; use it to cross the screening line and let Hindi lift your score.

Study plan built around Hindi

  1. First month: GS foundations through the NCERT texts (class 6 upward), UP GK notes, and 30 minutes of Hindi grammar daily.
  2. Second month: one drafting format every two days and one essay per week, checked against word limits.
  3. Third month: full prelims mocks of 200 questions, timed at 3 hours, with an eye on negative marks.
  4. After prelims: shift almost entirely to mains writing and start Hindi typing practice if you have applied for ARO posts.
Imran has strong GS from his PCS preparation but rarely writes in formal Hindi. He keeps one GS revision slot a day and spends the rest on drafting. Within six weeks his office memos follow the right format and his essays stop running over 600 words.

The syllabus of ro aro becomes clearer once you study past papers, which are on the commission's website and show the type of drafting and essay topics set. Use them before you buy any extra material, and look at the UPPSC previous papers page for how to work through them.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an interview in UPPSC RO ARO?

No. Selection rests on the written stages, with a qualifying Hindi typing test for ARO type posts and a document check at the end.

Ro aro ka syllabus kya hai for a beginner?

Prelims has General Studies and General Hindi. Mains has General Studies again, a Hindi drafting paper, an objective vocabulary paper and a Hindi essay paper. One GS topic list serves prelims and mains alike.

Who is eligible for RO and ARO posts?

You need a graduate degree from any recognised university as the base condition, and some posts add subject or computer conditions such as O Level. The general age range has been 21 to 40 years, and reserved groups domiciled in UP get extra years. Check the advertisement for the post-wise details.

What typing speed is needed for ARO?

Hindi typing in Devanagari at 25 words per minute is the usual requirement for Assistant Review Officer posts. It works as a pass or fail check: no marks are added, yet missing the speed shuts you out of that post.

Is the RO ARO syllabus the same as the Allahabad High Court RO ARO exam?

No. The High Court conducts its own recruitment with a different pattern. Our page on the High Court's RO and ARO paper covers that exam.

Can I write the mains essay in English?

The essay paper is a Hindi essay paper, so it is written in Hindi. Confirm the medium rules for every paper in the advertisement.
