UPPSC previous year paper guide for prelims and mains

Civil servicesPrelims and mainsHindi and EnglishUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Nothing shows how UP PCS turns its syllabus into questions as plainly as a UPPSC previous year paper: the prelims GS I paper of 150 questions, the CSAT paper of 100, and the eight mains papers that include General Hindi, Essay and two papers on Uttar Pradesh. Past papers show the share of state questions, the style of statement questions and the length the mains expects.

Papers from the latest cycles match the current scheme, which has no optional subject. Older mains papers still help for general studies, but their optional papers no longer apply.

What a UPPSC previous year paper reveals

Prelims GS I

  • A clear block of questions on Uttar Pradesh: districts, rivers, national parks, crops, handicrafts, schemes and state history.
  • Many multi-statement and match-the-column questions, where partial knowledge leads to wrong answers.
  • History and polity questions at roughly the level of school NCERT books, with more factual detail than analysis.

CSAT

  • Reading passages in English and Hindi, class 10 arithmetic, and reasoning puzzles. Hindi grammar questions catch out English medium students.

Mains

  • General Hindi asks for letter and notice drafting, précis and grammar; it rewards neat, correct language.
  • Essay topics come in three sections, and you choose one from each.
  • GS V and VI want UP data in answers: state schemes, district examples, figures.

We describe styles seen in recent papers here; we have not built an official topic-wise count.

A practice plan with uppcs prelims previous year paper sets

  1. Begin with one uppsc pre previous year paper: solve its GS I untimed and mark every UP-specific question you missed. Build your state notes from these first.
  2. From the next week, attempt one paper every four days in exactly two hours, with negative marking applied.
  3. Solve CSAT papers every weekend. If you score below 90 of 200, give it extra time, because missing 33 percent ends your attempt regardless of GS I.
  4. For mains, write answers to two old GS questions a day within the word limit, and one essay every week.
  5. For General Hindi, practise one letter and one précis from old papers each week.
Ayesha, a final year student in Aligarh, found she was getting most national polity questions right but under half of the UP questions. She made a 30 page UP file from five old GS I papers: districts, parks, rivers and schemes. Her next mock showed the biggest jump in exactly that block.

Sample questions in the UP PCS style

We wrote the items below ourselves to mirror the prelims and mains; no line comes from an actual exam.

  1. The brass handicraft industry of Uttar Pradesh is most closely linked with which city? Options: Moradabad, Firozabad, Bhadohi, Kannauj. Correct: Moradabad. Firozabad is known for glass, Bhadohi for carpets, Kannauj for perfume.
  2. Dudhwa National Park lies in which district? Options: Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Sonbhadra. Correct: Lakhimpur Kheri.
  3. Part IX of the Constitution, which deals with panchayats, begins at which Article? Options: 240, 243, 244, 246. Correct: 243.
  4. Mains style (GS VI): Examine how district-level product clusters can support small industries in Uttar Pradesh. Give examples from two districts. (125 words)
  5. Mains style (Essay): Villages as engines of a growing economy.

Using papers in Hindi and English

Each prelims booklet carries every question in Hindi and English side by side, so what people search as a uppsc previous year paper in Hindi turns out to be the Hindi half of the very same booklet. If you will write mains in Hindi, practise your answers in Hindi from the start; technical words in economy and science take time to write cleanly. Bilingual candidates should read both versions of a confusing question, and check the booklet's instructions for which language version prevails when the two differ.

Where to get papers officially

Check the answer key and notices sections of uppsc.up.nic.in, where the commission posts prelims answer keys for each cycle along with question booklet series. Keep your own question booklet if the commission allows candidates to take it after the exam. For anything else, compare with the official key before trusting it.

Printed books of solved papers exist, but their answers are not official. Check doubtful answers against the commission's final key. For a national comparison, our guide to UPSC previous year papers covers the central civil services, the state exams section lists other UP recruitments, and the UPPSC cut off page shows how scores turn into selection.

Paper structure on this page follows the current scheme. Confirm it against the latest notification before you set mock targets.

Frequently asked questions

Is an old uppcs mains previous year question paper still useful after the pattern change?

Yes for GS, Essay and General Hindi. Skip the old optional papers, and for GS V and VI rely on papers from the new scheme.

How many years of uppsc prelims previous year paper should I solve?

Recent cycles matter most, so start there. Then go back five to seven years for GS I to spot repeated themes, especially on Uttar Pradesh.

Is the UPPSC previous year question paper available in Hindi?

Yes. Prelims booklets are bilingual, so the same paper works for Hindi and English medium candidates.

Do UP PCS questions repeat?

Exact questions rarely repeat, but topics such as UP rivers, parks, handicrafts and schemes return often. Learn the topic, not the single question.

Is a uppsc previous year paper book necessary?

Not necessary. It saves time, but cross-check answers with the official key, since printed solutions sometimes differ.

Should I solve CSAT papers if I am good at maths?

Yes. CSAT also has Hindi and comprehension questions, and the 33 percent bar has stopped many strong GS candidates.
