UPP Constable Syllabus and Written Exam Pattern

Defence and policeClass 12 levelUP state policeUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The UPP constable syllabus rests on one 300 mark test of 150 multiple choice items, divided in near equal parts among four blocks: Hindi, General Knowledge, an IQ and aptitude block, and numerical plus mental ability. UPP is simply the short form aspirants use for Uttar Pradesh Police, and the same paper is used for constable posts in the civil police, PAC and jail warder cadres.

This page works as a quick revision sheet: what each block of questions asks, how much it is worth, how the physical round works and a summary in Hindi. For a longer reading of the same exam with a 12 week plan, see our UP police constable syllabus guide.

Posts that share the UPP written test

A single UPPRPB advertisement usually bundles several constable cadres. In the most recent large recruitment these were Constable Civil Police, Constable PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary), Special Security Force, female battalion posts, Mounted Police and Jail Warder. Everyone writes the same question paper, and posts are allotted later according to merit and the preference you give in your form.

So when someone asks for the PAC syllabus or the jail warder syllabus, the answer is this paper. Physical measurement rules can differ slightly for a few cadres, so go through the cadre wise tables in your advertisement.

Each correct answer earns 2 marks. With 0.5 deducted for a wrong answer, each error eats 25 percent of what a correct reply earns, meaning four bad guesses cancel one good answer. In 120 minutes you have 48 seconds a question; aim to finish Hindi and reasoning faster than that and bank time for arithmetic.

Each notification fixes the lowest qualifying score for every category. Read that table and the marking rules in the admit card before exam day, as they can change between recruitments.

Samanya Gyan block: what the GK questions cover

The GK block is the widest, so study it in themes rather than as one big subject.

  • Static India: history from ancient times to the freedom struggle; the land, rivers and resources of India; polity, the Constitution and the working of public administration
  • Economy: agriculture, trade and commerce, banking, plus population, urbanisation and the environment
  • Science in everyday life: health, nutrition, common inventions, space and defence technology
  • Uttar Pradesh special: culture, festivals and customs, education, the land revenue system and state administration
  • Policing themes: internal security and terrorism, human rights, cyber crime and social media misuse, money laundering, and laws that protect women and children
  • Current events: national and international happenings and major international bodies

The policing themes are short, scoring and easy to skip by mistake. Make one page of notes each on cyber crime laws and on women's safety laws.

Samanya Hindi block: grammar first, then literature

The Hindi block is set roughly at Intermediate level. Most items are grammar based and can be answered in under half a minute once the rules are clear.

  • Vilom shabd and paryayvachi shabd
  • Vakyansh ke liye ek shabd (one word substitution)
  • Tatsam and tadbhav forms, ling and vachan
  • Samas, sandhi vichchhed, pratyay and upsarg
  • Shuddh vartani and vakya shuddhi (spelling and sentence correction)
  • Muhavare and lokoktiyan with their meanings
  • Ras, chhand and alankar at a basic level
  • Hindi writers, poets and their major works
  • An apathit gadyansh (unseen passage) with questions

Students from English medium schools should start this block early, since literature questions on authors and works need memorising.

Ganit and reasoning blocks in brief

Numerical and Mental Ability

Arithmetic of class 10 standard: whole numbers and simplification, fractions with decimals, LCM with HCF, square roots, average, percentage, ratios, discount, profit and loss, both types of interest, partnership, work and wages, cisterns, train and speed sums, and simple mensuration. The mental ability half adds series, coding, direction sense, word formation and logic diagrams.

Mental Aptitude, IQ and Reasoning

Two kinds of item sit here. Aptitude items describe a situation a constable may face, such as a crowd at a fair, a dispute in a village or a complaint from a woman, and ask the most suitable response; themes range over keeping the peace, protecting the public, harmony between communities, preventing crime, policing in villages and emotional intelligence. IQ items cover analogy, classification, similarities and differences, spatial visualisation, observation, relationships and number or figure series.

PST and race after the written test

Candidates who come high enough on written marks are called for document checks and measurement, then the run. Neither adds marks; both must be cleared.

  • Height: men 168 cm (160 cm for ST), women 152 cm (147 cm for ST)
  • Chest for men: at least 79 cm, expanding to 84 cm (ST candidates 77 and 82 cm)
  • Weight for women: minimum 40 kg
  • Race: men cover 4.8 km in 25 minutes, women cover 2.4 km in 14 minutes

A medical examination follows before final appointment. To see how written marks have translated into selection, read our UP police cut off page.

Pooja from Gorakhpur is strong in Hindi but slow in maths. She splits her mornings into 40 minutes of arithmetic and 20 minutes of GK, and in the evening jogs 2 km, adding a few hundred metres every week. By the time the admit card arrives she can cover 2.4 km in about 13 minutes, so the race no longer worries her.

Using past UPP papers the right way

Old papers show the level of the Hindi block, the share of UP specific GK and the length of the arithmetic questions better than any summary. Take at least five full papers on a printed OMR sheet in 2 hours, then sort your wrong answers by block. Official sources for them, and a review method, are on our previous papers page.

Aspirants also preparing for the sub inspector exam can compare the deeper SI paper on the UP SI syllabus page.

Frequently asked questions

What does UPP stand for in UPP constable?

UPP is short for Uttar Pradesh Police. Aspirants use it as shorthand, so the UPP constable syllabus and the UP police constable syllabus refer to one and the same paper set by UPPRPB.

How are the 150 UPP questions divided?

In the latest recruitment, General Knowledge and Numerical and Mental Ability had 38 questions each, while General Hindi and Mental Aptitude with Reasoning had 37 each. All 150 questions carry 2 marks.

What qualification do I need to sit the UPP written test?

An Intermediate pass, or a qualification the state treats as equal to it, is required by the cut-in date that the advertisement names. There is no separate subject requirement, so arts, science and commerce students can all apply.

What age band applies to UPP constable applicants?

The most recent round let in general category men aged 18 to 22 and women aged 18 to 25, and a one off extra 3 years was then granted for that recruitment. SC, ST and OBC candidates domiciled in UP receive additional years as per state policy.

Does the race decide my rank?

No. The race and the body measurements are pass or fail tests. Among those who pass them and the medical, rank depends only on written marks.

Which books suit the UPP constable syllabus?

For GK, class 6 to 10 NCERT books in science and social science lay most of the foundation. Add a Hindi vyakaran book of Intermediate level, a basic arithmetic practice book and a recent UP general knowledge guide.
