UP Police Constable Cut Off: How the Marks Are Decided

Defence and policeOut of 300Category wiseUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Put simply, UP police constable cut off marks are the lowest written exam scores, out of 300, at which candidates of a category move to the next stage or win a post. UPPRPB, the state's police recruitment board, works them out after each written test, separately for every category, because only the written marks decide merit while the physical tests are pass or fail.

We have not printed exact past figures on this page since none of the figures we found could be tied to a notice issued by the board. What follows is how the marks are set, what moved them in the last two recruitments and how to check the official numbers yourself.

What UP police constable cut off marks stand for

There are really two cut offs in each recruitment. The first is the written exam cut off for being called to document verification and the Physical Standard Test. Then comes the mark for final selection, worked out after the PST, the race and the medical have removed candidates who did not qualify. The final mark is usually close to the first one, and sometimes a little lower, because some shortlisted candidates drop out at the physical stages.

Both marks are calculated on the written score alone. Running faster or being taller earns nothing extra.

How UPPRPB arrives at the marks

  1. The board totals your written marks after deducting for wrong answers as per the notification.
  2. Where the paper is held in several shifts, scores are adjusted by the method the notification states, so that an easier or harder shift does not give anyone an unfair edge.
  3. Candidates are ranked category wise against the vacancies in each category.
  4. A multiple of the vacancies, as fixed in the notification, is called for document verification and PST, and whoever sits at the bottom of that list sets the stage cut off with their score.
  5. After the physical tests and medical, the board prepares the final merit list for each category and post.
The minimum qualifying score in the written test, the size of the shortlist and the tie break rules are printed in each advertisement. Read them in the notification for your recruitment before relying on any figure.

Category, gender and quota effects

The board reserves posts for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates as per UP rules, and also applies horizontal reservations, such as for women, ex servicemen and dependants of freedom fighters. Each of these groups can end up with its own effective cut off. Candidates of reserved categories from outside Uttar Pradesh are treated as unreserved, so check your domicile status carefully.

Qualifying marks versus selection

Every notification sets a minimum score for the written test, and anyone below it is out regardless of vacancies. But clearing that minimum is not the same as getting selected. The real target is the category cut off, which in a state with this many aspirants sits far above the minimum.

Pooja, an OBC candidate from Gorakhpur, scored comfortably above the qualifying minimum in her mocks but kept finishing about 25 marks behind the score toppers in her test group were getting. She looked at her answer sheets and found 30 wrong answers per mock. Cutting those to 12 by skipping pure guesses lifted her score by more than her extra reading had.

Up police cut off: setting your own target

Rather than chasing an online number, set a target that keeps you safe in a tough year:

  • Score at least 75% of your mock total from the two practice friendly sections, Hindi and reasoning.
  • Keep wrong answers under 10% of attempted questions, since recent papers were reported to cut 0.5 mark for every wrong answer.
  • Use your mock rank, not just your mark, if your test series is large.

To make this work, build your plan around the UP police constable syllabus and practise with real papers from the UP police previous papers page. Aspirants also applying for the higher post can compare the UP SI cut off.

How to check the official upp cut off

  1. Open the board's website, linked above.
  2. Go to the results or notices section and find your advertisement number.
  3. Download the result notice. It shows the lowest qualifying score per category for that stage, and the final result carries the final marks.
  4. Match your category, gender and post (Civil Police, PAC, Jail Warder) to the right row.

For other police forces, see the defence and police section.

Frequently asked questions

Does UPPRPB release the cut off with the result?

Yes. The board's result notices have shown the cut off of each category for that stage, and the final result shows final marks. Always take the figure from the official notice.

Is the race counted in the cut off?

No. Both physical tests are pass or fail. Only the written paper fixes where you stand on the merit list.

Do men and women get separate cut offs?

It can be, because horizontal reservation for women creates a separate pool of seats. Check the result notice for the exact split.

Why did the 60,244 post exam happen twice?

The written exam held in February 2024 was cancelled after reports of a paper leak, and the board conducted a fresh exam in August 2024 for all candidates.

Are expected cut offs on the internet reliable?

Not really. They are guesses based on answer key estimates and are often far off. Wait for the board's own notice.

Can I be selected if I score just above the minimum qualifying marks?

Only if your category's cut off happens to fall there, which is unlikely given the competition. Aim well above it.
