A up si previous year paper shows you, better than any guide, how the board actually asks General Hindi, law, numerical ability and reasoning across 160 questions in two hours. The two most recent written exams, the online test of the 2021 cycle and the OMR based test of the 2025 cycle held over two days in four shifts, give you several complete papers to work with.
Below you will find a recap of the pattern, what those papers reveal, a practice plan built around the 35% sectional floor, a few sample questions of our own, and the official places to look. For the full topic list, open the UP SI syllabus.

The paper format in brief
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Hindi language and literature | 40 | 100 |
| Law, Constitution, GK | 40 | 100 |
| Numbers plus mental ability | 40 | 100 |
| Aptitude, IQ and reasoning | 40 | 100 |
A minimum of 35 in each section and 200 overall is needed to qualify. As wrong answers carry no penalty, the papers reward full attempts: an unanswered question is simply 2.5 marks lost.
What recent papers reveal
- General Hindi is grammar heavy. Sandhi, samas, synonyms, opposites, muhavare, one word substitution and literature questions about poets and their works dominate. An unseen passage appears too.
- Law questions test basics. Constitutional articles, fundamental rights, police related laws and acts on women, children and cyber crime are common.
- UP general knowledge has a clear presence. Expect questions on the state's districts, culture, fairs, administration and schemes.
- Numerical ability is school level, but its mental ability part mixes in series, analogy and direction questions.
- Aptitude items describe real duty scenes. They ask how an officer should behave in a public or law and order situation.
A practice plan built on old papers
- Weeks 1 and 2: solve only the Hindi section of four shifts. List every grammar topic that cost you marks and revise it the same day.
- Weeks 3 and 4: take the law and GK sections of the same shifts. Separate errors into constitution, criminal law, UP GK and current affairs.
- Weeks 5 and 6: combine sections 3 and 4 into one 80 question, 60 minute drill, since both test reasoning.
- From week 7: full two hour papers twice a week. After each, check that no single section fell below 45, giving yourself a buffer above the 35 floor.
Sample questions in the UP SI style
The questions below are our own, written to match the format. They are not from any board paper.

- Under the Constitution, the right to constitutional remedies is given in which article? Choices: Article 19 / Article 21 / Article 32 / Article 226. Key: Article 32
- A train 180 metres long crosses a pole in 12 seconds. What is its speed? Choices: 15 m per second / 18 m per second / 12 m per second / 20 m per second. Key: 15 m per second
- A crowd gathers after a road accident and blocks traffic. What should an officer do first? Choices: arrange help for the injured and clear the road / arrest the driver at once / disperse the crowd by force / wait for senior officers. Key: the first choice
Getting a up si previous year paper from official sources
Only UPPRPB can give you a genuine paper. After the written exam it releases an answer key and invites objections within a short window; in the 2025 cycle this window ran for a few days after the exam. Look in the notices section of uppbpb.gov.in for the answer key PDF and any linked question booklet.
- Save the answer key while the objection window is open, since that file is the closest thing to an official up si previous year question paper and notices can be moved later.
- Keep your own OMR copy or response details if the board provides them.
- Treat memory based papers with caution, as they are rebuilt from candidates' recollection.
About the upsi previous year question paper book
Many aspirants buy a printed collection of solved past papers. If you do, check three things: that it includes the 2025 cycle shifts, that its law answers are updated to the new criminal codes, and that it explains Hindi grammar answers rather than just giving the option. An outdated book can teach you old section numbers.
Using your scores
A paper score matters only when you compare it with real selection lines. The final UR line in the 2021 cycle was reported at just over 302 out of 400, according to the category wise UP SI lines. Constable aspirants in UP can find a matching guide under UP Police Constable previous papers.
Frequently asked questions
Which up si previous year paper comes first in my practice?
Begin from the 2025 cycle shifts, since they follow the latest syllabus, including the new criminal laws. Then move to the 2021 papers for extra Hindi, reasoning and GK practice.
Does the board publish UP SI question papers?
The board publishes answer keys after the written exam and accepts objections for a few days. Check its notices section for the key and any question booklet linked with it.
Are old UP SI law questions still useful?
Constitution and general law questions are, but any answer based on an IPC or CrPC section must be matched with the corresponding BNS or BNSS provision.
Is the paper available in English?
Apart from the Hindi section, yes. Law, numerical ability and reasoning questions appear in both languages side by side.
How many past shifts are worth solving?
All four shifts of the 2025 cycle plus eight to ten shifts from the 2021 cycle give enough variety. Review each paper section by section before taking the next.
What score in old papers is a good sign?
Consistently scoring above 290 with no section below 50 suggests you are close to recent UR selection levels. Reserved category candidates can compare with their own category lines.
