The UGEE syllabus rests on school level Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from classes 11 and 12, tested in two parts: SUPR (Subject Proficiency Test), which checks your PCM basics, and REAP (Research Aptitude Test), which checks how you think through unfamiliar problems. IIIT Hyderabad uses this three hour computer based test to pick students for its five year dual degree programmes (B.Tech plus MS by Research).
This page lays out the UGEE exam pattern, how marks are given and lost, the topics behind each part, where the interview comes in, and a revision plan suited to a class 12 student who is also preparing for board exams.

How UGEE selection works
UGEE is not a rank list exam in the usual sense. It works as a filter followed by a ranking, and then a human conversation decides the offer.
- SUPR screens applicants on PCM fundamentals. Only those who clear it have their REAP paper counted.
- REAP ranks the candidates who passed SUPR and sets the order of interview calls.
- Interview on the Hyderabad campus. The admissions page states that final offers depend on interview performance and that the committee's decision is final.
Seat allotment then runs in rounds across the dual degree branches. The institute also aims for at least a quarter of interview shortlisted candidates to be women.
UGEE exam pattern and marking scheme
| Part | Questions | Marks per correct answer | Wrong answer | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SUPR (Subject Proficiency) | 50 MCQs | +1 | minus 0.25 | 60 minutes |
| REAP (Research Aptitude) | 50 MCQs | +2 | minus 0.5 | 120 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 150 marks | 3 hours | |
The official page confirms the two timings, the three hour total and the 25% negative marking. The question counts and per question marks above come from reports of recent papers, not from the admissions page, so treat them as the usual shape rather than a promise.
UGEE syllabus for SUPR: the PCM base
SUPR follows the class 11 and 12 syllabi of CBSE and most state boards. If you have studied for your boards and done some JEE Main level practice, you already know the ground. The questions reward clean concepts over long calculation.
Physics
- Mechanics: Newton's laws applied to blocks and pulleys, circular motion, conservation of energy and momentum, torque and rotation
- Heat: first law of thermodynamics, gas behaviour, kinetic theory
- Fluids, elasticity, simple harmonic motion, wave motion and sound
- Electricity: Coulomb's law, Gauss's law, capacitors, circuits with Kirchhoff's rules, magnetic fields of currents, Faraday's law, alternating current
- Light and the atom: lenses, mirrors, interference, photoelectric effect, nuclei
Chemistry
- Physical side: stoichiometry, structure of the atom, gas laws, enthalpy and entropy, chemical and ionic equilibrium, cells and electrolysis, rate laws, colligative properties
- Inorganic side: periodicity, bonding and molecular shape, s block, p block and d block behaviour, coordination complexes with IUPAC names
- Organic side: reaction mechanisms and isomerism, hydrocarbons, compounds with halogen, oxygen and nitrogen groups, biomolecules and polymers
Mathematics
- Algebra: functions, complex numbers, quadratics, progressions, counting principles, binomial expansion, matrices
- Geometry: straight lines, circles and conics, vector algebra, lines and planes in space
- Calculus: limits, derivatives and their uses, definite and indefinite integrals, area under curves, simple differential equations
- Trigonometric identities and equations, probability, mean and variance
REAP syllabus: research aptitude
REAP is the part that makes UGEE different. It carries more marks per question and more time, and it decides who reaches the interview. The admissions page describes it as a test of critical and creative thinking. In practice the questions mix school PCM with puzzles you have not seen before.
- Applied maths and arithmetic: percentages, ratios, rates, work rates, trains and boats, growth and interest, read from graphs or word problems
- Algebra and geometry thinking: counting, probability, series, logarithms, curve sketching, spatial and transformation geometry
- Reasoning and data: logical puzzles, coding patterns, data interpretation, data sufficiency, Venn diagrams, cubes and directions
- Passage and case questions: a short write up on a physics or chemistry idea, or a made up language, followed by questions you answer from the passage itself
No textbook covers REAP neatly. The official sample questions are the best guide to its style.
What to focus on for each part
Because SUPR only filters, your aim there is safety, not a top score. Aim to clear it comfortably by being accurate on familiar chapters. Leave out shaky guesses: each error takes back one fourth of that question's value.
REAP is where the competition is. Two marks a question and half a mark lost per error mean that a calm, selective attempt usually beats a rushed full attempt. Students who do well tend to read slowly, sketch the situation, and test options against small cases.
A 12 week UGEE study plan
- Weeks 1 to 4: NCERT PCM chapter by chapter, with 20 quick concept MCQs per chapter. Note weak chapters for later.
- Weeks 5 to 8: Two REAP style sessions a week: data interpretation, logic puzzles, passage based science questions. Keep PCM alive with a 45 minute revision block each day.
- Weeks 9 to 11: Full three hour mocks in the SUPR then REAP order. Review negative marks after each one.
- Week 12: Light revision, the official sample papers again, and early thoughts for the interview.
Students preparing for JEE Main will find that the SUPR portion overlaps almost fully, so one round of PCM practice serves both. Other private engineering tests like BITSAT share the same base.
Preparing for the UGEE interview
The interview is where offers are made, so do not treat it as a formality. Expect questions on why you want a research oriented dual degree, the branch you prefer, projects or reading you have done, and short problem discussions where the panel watches how you reason aloud. Be honest about what you do not know and think through the problem step by step instead of guessing an answer.
Books in general terms: NCERT class 11 and 12 PCM for SUPR, a standard reasoning and puzzle practice book for REAP, and the institute's own sample questions. For more entrance tests with similar subjects, see the entrance exams hub.
Frequently asked questions
Does UGEE follow the JEE Main syllabus?
SUPR covers the same class 11 and 12 PCM that JEE Main uses, though the questions are shorter and more concept based. REAP has no JEE equivalent; it tests reasoning, data and passage based thinking.
What is the UGEE marking scheme?
Both parts carry 25% negative marking. In recent papers this has meant +1 and minus 0.25 in SUPR and +2 and minus 0.5 in REAP. Unanswered questions get zero.
Does my SUPR score decide admission?
SUPR is used to filter candidates, and REAP is then used to rank those who pass it for the interview. The admissions page says the final offer rests on the interview.
Who can apply for UGEE?
You need class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, passed within the window of years set in the brochure. The admissions page mentions no age limit. Check the latest brochure for the exact pass years.
Is UGEE held offline?
No. It is a computer based test held at centres in many cities on a single day, with SUPR and REAP back to back.
How many seats does UGEE fill?
Seats are spread across CSE, ECE and four interdisciplinary computer science tracks, and the total is small: 120 in the latest brochure (35 CSE, 25 ECE and 15 in each of the four other tracks). Check the portal for the current count.
