The SSB TGT syllabus, set by the State Selection Board, Odisha, for Trained Graduate Teacher posts in government high schools, has two blocks: pedagogy and evaluation, which is common to all posts, and the subject you will teach, such as Arts, PCM, CBZ, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu or physical education. Recent cycles have used one objective test of 100 questions for 150 marks, where a correct response is worth 1.5 and 0.5 is taken off for a wrong one.
Merit for the vacancies is drawn from that written test, followed by verification of your documents, so every mark matters. On this page you will find the SSB TGT exam pattern, what each stream covers, the eligibility rules including OSSTET, and a study plan tied to the way the paper is weighted.

How SSB recruits Trained Graduate Teachers
SSB Odisha fills TGT vacancies in government high schools (and in some cycles, posts in aided schools) through a single written test. There is no interview in recent cycles. Candidates are ranked by their written marks within each post and category, and those in the zone of selection are called for document verification before appointment.
Do not confuse this with the TGT drive that the Odisha Subordinate Staff Selection Commission runs for schools under other departments. That exam has its own two-paper pattern and syllabus, explained with the OSSSC syllabus.
SSB TGT exam pattern
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type | Objective, multiple choice |
| Questions | 100 |
| Total marks | 150 (1.5 per question) |
| Negative marking | Minus 0.5 per incorrect response |
| Parts | Pedagogy and evaluation (common) plus the subject of the post |
| Duration | 2 hours in earlier advertisements; the latest cycle was reported as a computer based test in shorter shifts |
The pedagogy block is the smaller share of the paper, and the subject block carries most of the marks. The annexure to each advertisement shows the exact split for your post.
Pedagogy and evaluation, common to every post
- Learning as a process and as an outcome; readiness, maturation and motivation
- Humanistic and constructivist views of learning, including the ideas of Rogers, Piaget and Vygotsky
- Teacher centred, learner centred and learning centred classrooms
- Managing diversity: teaching learning material, audio visual aids, group and self learning, inclusive education
- Assessment and evaluation: continuous and comprehensive evaluation, formative, summative and diagnostic assessment, assessment for and as learning
- Tools and test construction: projects, observation, self and peer assessment, blueprints, item writing, standardised and teacher made tests
PET candidates get a version focused on teaching methods in physical education (lecture, demonstration, whole and part methods) and on planning and evaluating school sports and health education.
Subject portions by stream
TGT Arts
History (early, medieval and colonial India, the freedom struggle, the world wars), political science (the Constitution, Union and state government), geography and economics, broadly at graduation level with a school teaching angle.
TGT Science PCM

The topic lists above are summarised from past syllabus annexures. Treat the annexure of your own advertisement as the final word, since chapters are added or dropped.
Eligibility in brief
- Arts: graduation in arts or commerce with the required school subjects, 50% (45% for reserved categories), with a B.Ed, or an integrated BA B.Ed taken as a four-year programme
- PCM and CBZ: BSc or engineering graduation with the relevant subjects, same percentage rule, plus B.Ed or integrated BSc B.Ed
- Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu: graduation or Shastri, Alim or Fazil level qualification in the language with the matching teacher training

If you still have to clear the eligibility test, the OSSTET syllabus page covers it.
Using the marking scheme to your advantage
Each miss takes away one third of the value of a hit. Three wild guesses that all miss wipe out one correct answer, so risk an answer on a doubtful SSB question only after striking off a pair of options. Because the subject block carries most of the marks, your graduation subjects decide the merit list; the pedagogy block is where well prepared candidates make sure of easy marks rather than where ranks are won.
Covering the SSB TGT syllabus in about three months
- Weeks 1 to 4: list every topic in your stream annexure and revise it from Class 9 to 12 textbooks of the Odisha board and NCERT, then your graduation notes.
- Weeks 5 to 7: pedagogy from your B.Ed notes: learning theories, CCE and test construction. Twenty objective questions a day.
- Weeks 8 to 10: topic tests in your subject, timed, followed by a log of every wrong answer.
- Weeks 11 to 12: full 100-question tests, past SSB papers where available, and a final round on the weakest two topics.
Study material that works
Your B.Ed textbooks cover the pedagogy block well, and the school textbooks of your subject are the foundation of the subject block, because the paper tests content you will teach in Classes 9 and 10. Graduation level reference books help with the harder questions. For comparison with central and other state teacher exams, see the KVS TGT syllabus, the DSSSB TGT syllabus or browse every state and central option on the teaching exams page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the SSB TGT exam pattern?
Recent SSB Odisha cycles used one objective test of 100 questions for 150 marks. A correct pick adds 1.5, while a miss subtracts 0.5. The paper has a pedagogy and evaluation part plus a subject part for your post.
Is OSSTET compulsory for SSB TGT?
Yes, recent advertisements require a pass in the Odisha Secondary School Teacher Eligibility Test for the matching category and subject. Check the category accepted for your post in the latest notice.
Is there an interview in SSB TGT recruitment?
Recent cycles have selected candidates on written test merit followed by document verification, without an interview. The advertisement for your cycle states the method that applies.
Which age band applies to SSB TGT candidates?
Unreserved candidates must be between 21 and 38. SC, ST, SEBC, women and ex-servicemen get 5 more years, and persons with disabilities get 10 more years.
Does every stream get the same SSB TGT paper?
Only the pedagogy and evaluation block is common. The subject block differs for Arts, PCM, CBZ, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and PET, and PET also has its own pedagogy topics.
May I apply while my B.Ed results are pending?
Rules on appearing candidates vary between advertisements, and the qualification usually has to be complete by a cut off date. SSB prints the date by which your degree must be complete; go by that.
