The RRB JE CBT 1 cut off marks the smallest normalised score, out of 100, that a candidate needed in a particular RRB, category and post group to be shortlisted for CBT 2. It is not a single national figure: each of the regional boards publishes its own table, so the same score can clear one RRB and miss another.
This page explains how those numbers are set, shows real figures from an official RRB notice for a past cycle, explains why the qualifying percentage is a different thing from the real cut off, and tells you where to find the table for your own board.

What decides the RRB JE CBT 1 cut off
For CBT 1, the RRBs do not pick a pass mark in advance. They line up every candidate's normalised score within a board, then call a set multiple of the community wise vacancies to CBT 2. Past notices have used 15 times the vacancies for this step. The score of the last candidate called becomes the cut off for that category and post group.
Because candidates sit different shifts with different question sets, raw marks are converted into normalised marks first. That is why official tables show figures like 72.98245 rather than whole numbers.
RRB JE cut off from an official notice: CEN 03/2024, CBT 1
RRB Secunderabad published its CBT 1 result for JE, DMS, CMA and allied posts under CEN 03/2024 on 5 March 2025. The cut offs were given as normalised marks out of 100 for numbered post categories. A sample of rows:
| Post category no. | UR | OBC (NCL) | EWS | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 76.31 | 75.23 | 71.95 | 67.88 | 62.80 |
| 5 | 71.99 | 70.86 | 64.90 | 64.52 | 62.78 |
| 10 | 69.82 | 66.94 | 59.30 | 59.89 | 62.75 |
| 26 | 76.04 | 73.93 | 66.38 | 66.87 | 63.49 |
| 30 | 71.60 | 71.54 | 66.31 | 65.26 | 60.68 |
Across the post categories in that notice, the UR figures ranged from about 61 up to about 83. The category numbers match the post list in the CEN, so look up which number your post had. You can read the full table in the official RRB Secunderabad cut off notice.
RRB JE cut off zone wise: why boards differ
People often search for a zone wise RRB JE cut off, but the table is really board wise. The boards include Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bilaspur, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu, Kolkata, Malda, Mumbai, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Prayagraj, Ranchi, Secunderabad and Thiruvananthapuram. Each one has its own vacancies and its own applicant pool.
Boards with many applicants and few posts in a category tend to have higher cut offs. Boards with large vacancy counts for track or works posts can see lower ones. For the CEN 05/2025 cycle, CBT 1 was held over three days in February, results came out on 13 May, and every board posted its own cut off PDF.
If you are looking for the RRB JE Kolkata cut off, or the figure for any other board, open that board's own website and find the CBT 1 result notice for your CEN. Some boards publish the table as a scanned image, so you may need to zoom in.
Qualifying percentage versus the real cut off
The notice also sets a minimum percentage you must reach in each CBT just to be considered: 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for SC and for non creamy layer OBC, and 25% for ST. A small relaxation may be given to PwBD candidates if seats would otherwise stay empty.
In practice, the CBT 1 cut off has been far above these minimums. In the Secunderabad table above, even ST cut offs were above 60. So think of 40% as the minimum entry ticket and plan well beyond it.
RRB JE CBT 2 cut off and final selection
The CBT 2 cut off is the score used to call candidates for document verification. It is normalised out of 150, and it is set separately for each post, category and board, based on the number of vacancies. CBT 1 marks play no role at this point.
Since 100 of the 150 questions are technical, the CBT 2 cut off depends heavily on how hard the paper for your exam group was. A group with only a handful of posts on your board can swing a lot between cycles. Boards publish CBT 2 cut offs with the list of candidates shortlisted for document verification, and we have not seen a single reliable national figure, so check your own board's notice.
Factors that shift the line each cycle
- Vacancies per board and category: more posts in your category means a lower cut off.
- Applicants: a sharp rise in applications pushes the line up.
- Paper difficulty: normalisation evens out shifts, but a tough overall paper still lowers scores.
- Negative marking: careless guessing drags down the whole field.
- Shortlisting multiple: a larger multiple brings more people to CBT 2 and a lower CBT 1 line.
We do not give expected cut offs as fact. If you want a working target, take the highest figure for your post and category from the last official table of your board and aim a few marks above it.
Finding your board's official cut off table
- Go to the website of the RRB you applied to.
- Open the results section and find the CBT 1 or CBT 2 result notice for your CEN number.
- Download the cut off PDF and find your post category number from the CEN post list.
- Read the column for your community. Your own normalised score is shown in the scorecard link the board opens after the result.
To understand what CBT 1 and CBT 2 test before you set a target, read the RRB JE syllabus page, and time yourself on old RRB JE papers. For more railway figures, see the RRB NTPC cut off and railway exams pages.
Frequently asked questions
Is the RRB JE cut off the same for all RRBs?
No. Each board sets and publishes its own cut off for every post group and category, based on its vacancies and candidates. Always look at the table of the board you applied to.
What is a safe score in RRB JE CBT 1?
There is no official safe score. In the CEN 03/2024 table from RRB Secunderabad, UR cut offs for most post groups were in the 70s, with a few lower and one above 82. Aim clearly above the highest recent figure for your board and category.
Why are cut off marks shown with five decimals?
They are normalised marks. Because the CBT runs over many shifts, the RRBs adjust raw scores so that candidates who got a harder shift are not at a disadvantage, and the converted marks come out as decimals.
Does CBT 1 score count in the final merit?
No. CBT 1 only decides who sits CBT 2. The final merit list and the call for document verification are based on CBT 2 normalised marks.
Where is the RRB JE CBT 2 cut off zone wise?
Each board posts its CBT 2 cut off along with the list of candidates called for document verification. Open your RRB's results section and look for the CBT 2 notice for your CEN.
Is passing 40% enough to clear CBT 1?
Not usually. 40% is only the minimum to be eligible for the UR and EWS categories. The real cut off has been much higher because each board invites just so many people to CBT 2 for every post it has.
