RRB JE previous year question paper: how to use CBT 1 and CBT 2 papers

RailwayCBT 1 and CBT 2Shift wise setsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Solving an RRB JE previous year question paper teaches you how the boards frame their questions: 100 quick objective questions in CBT 1, and 150 in CBT 2 where two thirds come from your engineering branch. Working through a few full papers under time is the fastest way to learn the speed and accuracy this exam demands.

Below is a short recap of the pattern, what earlier papers tell you, a practice routine for each stage, five practice questions we wrote to match that style, and the official place to get the papers.

Exam at a glance

  • Official source

Website of the RRB you applied to, during the answer key window
  • CBT 1 paper

    100 questions in 90 minutes
  • CBT 2 paper

150 questions in 120 minutes, 100 of them technical
  • Penalty

Minus one third of a mark for each wrong answer
  • Languages

English, Hindi and the regional languages listed in the notice
  • Best use

Timed full papers, then error review by topic

The two papers in brief

What each RRB JE paper contains
StageSections and questionsTime
CBT 1Maths 30, reasoning 25, general awareness 15, general science 3090 minutes
CBT 2General awareness 15, physics and chemistry 15, computers 10, environment 10, branch technical questions 100120 minutes

Every question is worth one mark, and a third of that is lost for each error. The exam runs in many shifts, so every cycle produces a stack of different papers rather than one. Full topic lists are on the RRB JE syllabus page.

What past RRB JE papers reveal

  • Maths is arithmetic heavy. Percentages, ratios, time and work, mensuration and simplification show up in most shifts, with a few algebra and trigonometry questions.
  • Science is class 10 level. Questions are short and factual: laws of motion, light, electricity, acids and bases, life processes, human body.
  • Reasoning is pattern based. Series, coding, analogies, directions and blood relations appear in nearly every set.
  • General awareness mixes static and current topics. Expect polity, history, geography, awards, sports and recent government schemes.
  • Branch questions stay at diploma depth and get to the point. A definition, a formula, a unit, or a short numerical, rarely a long derivation.

Because the boards draw shifts from the same syllabus, the same question families repeat even when the exact numbers change. That is why old papers are useful even across cycles.

Practising with an RRB JE CBT 1 previous year question paper

  1. Sit the full paper in one go with a 90 minute timer. Do not pause.
  2. Score it with the official key, applying the one third deduction.
  3. Sort every wrong or skipped question into maths, reasoning, awareness or science.
  4. Spend the next three days only on the weakest of those four.
  5. Take a different shift's paper after that and compare section scores.

Track your attempt rate too. If you attempt 95 questions but get 20 wrong, you lose almost 7 marks to penalties. Fewer attempts with higher accuracy often give a better net score.

RRB JE CBT 2 previous year question paper practice, branch by branch

For CBT 2, split each paper into two parts during review: the 50 general questions and the 100 technical ones. Your technical score matters most, so record which subjects your mistakes come from.

  • Civil: mark questions from surveying, building materials, concrete technology, soil mechanics and estimating separately. An RRB JE civil previous year question paper tends to test units, IS code values and properties of materials often, so keep a one page list of these.
  • Electrical: group mistakes under machines, circuits, measurements and power systems.
  • Mechanical: thermal engineering, strength of materials and manufacturing usually carry the bulk.
  • Electronics: digital electronics, devices and communication are worth your first hours.
Arjun, a civil diploma holder, was stuck at 58 out of 100 in technical. After three old papers he saw that a third of his wrong answers were in surveying and estimating. He made formula cards for both, and two weeks later his technical score crossed 70.

Five sample questions in the RRB JE style

These are written by us for practice; they are not from any official paper.

  1. A sum doubles itself in 8 years at simple interest. What is the rate of interest per year?
    (a) 10% (b) 12.5% (c) 15% (d) 8%
  2. In a certain code, TRAIN is written as UQBHO. How is TRACK written in that code?
    (a) UQBBL (b) USBDL (c) UQBDJ (d) UQBBJ
  3. Which mirror is used by dentists to see an enlarged image of teeth?
    (a) Plane (b) Convex (c) Concave (d) Cylindrical
  4. The slump test is used to measure which property of fresh concrete?
    (a) Strength (b) Workability (c) Durability (d) Density
  5. For a DC shunt motor, the speed is roughly proportional to:
    (a) Back emf divided by flux (b) Flux divided by back emf (c) Armature current (d) Supply frequency

Answers: 1 (b), 2 (a), 3 (c), 4 (b), 5 (a). For question 2, each letter moves alternately one step forward and one step back.

Where to get an RRB JE previous year question paper officially

After each CBT, every RRB opens a link on its own website where candidates can see the question paper they attempted, their responses and the provisional answer key, and raise objections for a fee. This window stays open for a limited time only. If you appeared, save your copy before the link closes.

Final answer keys and result notices also go up on the board websites. RRB Secunderabad, for example, has hosted its CBT 1 result and cut off notices on its site; see the figures on our RRB JE cut off page.

Use only the official RRB websites or printed collections that reproduce those official papers. Unofficial copies often carry wrong answers.

Pairing papers with the right goals

Before you start, read the RRB JE eligibility rules so you know which posts and exam group you can apply for, since your technical paper depends on that. Use CBT 1 papers early, around week 4 of preparation, and switch to CBT 2 papers once you have covered at least half of your branch syllabus. In the final month, alternate one full paper with one review day.

Other railway papers help with the CBT 1 sections too. The RRB NTPC previous year papers are a good extra source for maths and reasoning practice.

Frequently asked questions

Do RRB JE questions repeat from previous papers?

The exact questions rarely repeat, but the types and topics do. Formulas, standard definitions and class 10 science facts come back in slightly different forms in most cycles.

How many previous papers should I solve?

Aim for at least 10 full CBT 1 papers and 8 to 10 full CBT 2 papers from different shifts. Review each one properly instead of rushing through more.

Can I see the old RRB JE paper in Hindi?

Yes. The CBT is offered in Hindi and English along with several regional languages, so the response sheet link shows the paper in the language you chose.

Are RRB JE CBT 2 papers different for each branch?

Yes. The 50 general questions are common, but the 100 technical questions come from your exam group, such as civil, electrical, mechanical or electronics.

Can I use SSC JE papers for RRB JE practice?

For the technical part, yes, because both are pitched at diploma level. The general sections differ, so use railway papers for maths, reasoning and science.
