RRB group D eligibility rests on three things: a class 10 pass, an ITI certificate or a National Apprenticeship Certificate; an age inside the band the notice gives for your category; and enough strength and stamina for the PET, plus the eyesight and health your post's medical grade demands. Indian citizens and a few other groups named in the notice can apply.
Railway rules for Level 1 posts have shifted between recent notices, especially the upper age limit and whether ITI was compulsory for technical departments. This page sets out the rules as they stood in the latest notice, flags what you must re check, and lists the papers you will need at document verification.

Nationality and who may apply
Indian citizens can apply. The nationality clause also opens the door to some non citizens too, namely people from Nepal or Bhutan and some returning migrants with Indian roots who now live here for good; some of them need a government eligibility certificate first. Your 10th certificate is the proof of name and date of birth, so make sure your form matches it letter for letter.
Educational qualification for Level 1
Under the latest Level 1 notice, holding any single item below by the last date of the application window was enough:
- Class 10 (matriculation) pass from a recognised board, or
- An ITI certificate from an institute recognised by NCVT or SCVT, or
- A National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT.
Older notices required an ITI or NAC in addition to class 10 for posts in technical departments. The last two notices are reported to accept any one of the three, but railway rules do change. Read the qualification table of the CEN you are applying to before you pay the fee.
Age limit and relaxation in the RRB group D eligibility criteria
The latest Level 1 notice uses an 18 to 33 band for UR and EWS, worked out as on the reference date printed in the CEN. The notice before it raised the upper limit for that cycle only, as a one time measure, so do not assume a special ceiling will return. Category relief is added on top of the general upper limit, as in other railway recruitments:
| Group | Extra years |
|---|---|
| Backward classes outside the creamy layer | 3 |
| Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes | 5 |
| PwBD | 10 (UR, EWS), 13 (OBC), 15 (SC, ST) |
| Ex servicemen | Service period plus 3 years (UR, EWS), 6 (OBC), 8 (SC, ST) |
| Serving railway staff, women who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated | Higher limits as listed in the notice |
Relaxations are not stacked: you get the biggest one you are entitled to, not a sum. Your exact ceiling and reference date are in the age paragraph of whichever notice you apply under.
Railway group D physical eligibility: the PET
Level 1 posts do not use a height or chest standard in recent notices. The physical bar is the Physical Efficiency Test, held after the CBT for candidates the board shortlists.
| Test | Male candidates | Female candidates |
|---|---|---|
| Weight carry | 35 kg over 100 metres within 2 minutes, without putting it down | 20 kg over 100 metres within 2 minutes, without putting it down |
| Running | 1000 metres within 4 minutes 15 seconds, single attempt | 1000 metres within 5 minutes 40 seconds, single attempt |
PwBD candidates, ex servicemen and course completed Act apprentices are exempt from the PET in the latest notice, though they still face the medical. It is a qualifying hurdle that adds nothing to your score.
Medical standards by post
Every Level 1 post carries a medical category. The latest notice uses A-2 and A-3 for safety posts such as pointsman, where eyesight and colour vision matter, then B-1, and C-1 as the most relaxed grade. The notice links each post to its grade in the vacancy annexure. The categories mostly differ on distance vision, near vision, colour vision and whether glasses are allowed.
If your eyesight is weak or you have colour vision problems, check the medical category column in the vacancy table and choose posts you can pass. A medical rejection at the last step wipes out a good CBT and PET performance.
Documents for verification
- Class 10 certificate (age and name proof) and marksheet
- ITI certificate or NAC, if applying on that basis
- Community proof: SC or ST certificate, an OBC certificate showing non creamy layer status, or an EWS certificate, each in the specimen format of the notice
- A disability certificate for PwBD claims
- Service discharge papers for former soldiers
- An NOC from your present employer if you already hold a public sector or government job

Frequently asked questions
Which certificates make me eligible for Level 1 posts?
The latest notice accepted a class 10 pass, or an ITI pass from a recognised institute, or an NAC from NCVT. Confirm the rule in the current notice, since earlier notices asked for ITI as well for technical posts.
What is the railway group D age limit?
In the latest notice the band runs from 18 to 33, while reserved groups, disabled applicants and former soldiers get extra years. The notice before it raised the upper limit for that cycle only, so read the age rule printed in the notice you apply under.
Do I need a minimum height for group D?
Recent Level 1 notices do not set a height or chest standard. The physical bar is the PET, followed by a medical test for the category of the post.
Can women apply for RRB group D?
Yes. Women apply under the same qualification and age rules, and get a separate PET standard: 20 kg weight carry and a 1000 metre run in 5 minutes 40 seconds.
Are graduates and 12th pass candidates allowed in group D?
Yes. Higher qualifications are allowed, but they give no extra marks. Selection is decided by the CBT, PET and medical.
May I send forms to two RRBs in one group D recruitment?
No. One CEN allows a single board per candidate, and filing more than one form risks cancellation of every form.
