Constable and SI written tests compared, with the Punjabi paper both ranks must clear

Punjab police syllabus and exam pattern by rank

Defence and policeConstable and SICBTUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The punjab police syllabus depends on the rank you apply for: constables sit one scored paper of 100 questions plus a Punjabi test, while sub inspectors face two scored papers of 100 questions each and a separate Punjabi paper. In both cases the Punjabi test only has to be passed, and the physical events after the written stage are qualifying.

This page lays the two ranks out together, showing where the papers overlap and where the SI test goes deeper. For a section by section breakdown of the constable test alone, open the Punjab police constable syllabus.

Which Punjab Police test are you preparing for

Punjab Police fills its two main entry ranks through separate advertisements, and each has its own scheme:

  • Constable for district policing and the armed battalions: Class 12 pass, a general age band of 18 to 28 in recent drives.
  • Sub Inspector in cadres such as District, Armed, Intelligence and Investigation: a bachelor's degree is required, with matriculation Punjabi, and the general age band reported is also 18 to 28.

For both ranks the order is the same. The computer based test comes first, then the running and jump events with height measurement, then scrutiny of your certificates. Since the physical events carry no marks, your written score alone sets your rank.

Constable Paper I sections

The constable test spreads its 100 questions across six sections:

SectionQuestions
GK and current events35
Maths20
Reasoning20
English10
Punjabi10
Digital literacy5

General awareness is the biggest block, and a large share of it is Punjab history, geography, culture and current events. Maths stays at the level of percentages, averages, ratios and simple interest.

SI Paper 1 and Paper 2 sections

The SI test sorts its subjects into two papers, each with three sections:

Sub Inspector papers as reported
PaperSectionQuestionsMarks
Paper 1General awareness50200
Numerical skills (quant)30120
Punjabi language2080
Paper 2Logical and analytical reasoning, data interpretation50200
Digital literacy and computer awareness30120
English language2080

Note how the weight shifts: computers get 30 questions at SI level against 5 for constables, and reasoning gets a full half of Paper 2, including data interpretation.

Topics you share across both ranks

General awareness

The Constitution and its institutions, the state assembly, courts, local government and Panchayati Raj; history and culture of India and Punjab; geography; the Indian economy; environment; science and technology; international summits; current affairs.

Numerical skills

Number system and simplification, fractions, ratios, averages, profit or loss, both types of interest, work rates, speed problems and mensuration.

Reasoning

Series, sequencing, coding and decoding, analogy, classification, directions, blood relations, ordering and ranking, statements and conclusions, puzzles, calendars, and at SI level data sufficiency and data interpretation.

Computers

Computer fundamentals, operating system basics, hardware, office software for documents and slides, internet and web, email, search, social media and mobile phones.

English and Punjabi

Error detection, sentence completion and structure, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, fill in the blanks, comprehension and precis, and translation between Punjabi and English in both directions.

Race, jumps and height checks

Both ranks go through a physical screening test and a physical measurement test, and both are pass or fail. The constable events reported for recent drives are a 1600 m race in 6 minutes 30 seconds for men and an 800 m race in 4 minutes 30 seconds for women, after which come two jumping events, long and high. For height, the minimum reported for both ranks is 5 ft 7 in (men) and 5 ft 2 in (women).

The SI event standards are set in each SI notification, so check the advertisement for the race distance and jump marks that apply to you.

Preparing with both ranks in mind

Many graduates apply for constable and SI in the same year. That works well because the subjects overlap, but plan the extras the SI test adds.

  • Treat Punjab GK as your core: it feeds 35 constable questions and 50 SI questions.
  • Go one level deeper in maths for SI: compound interest, mensuration and data interpretation.
  • Learn computers properly if you aim for SI, since 30 questions is too many to leave to chance.
  • Practise Punjabi grammar and translation every day; it shows up in the scored papers and in the qualifying paper.
  • With a quarter mark cut per wrong answer at SI level, stop guessing blindly in your mocks.
Harjot, a BSc graduate from Bathinda, filled both forms. He spent his mornings on Punjab history and polity, which counted for both tests, and his evenings on SI only topics such as data interpretation and computer awareness. Each Sunday he took one constable mock and one SI paper so he got used to the two marking schemes.

The neighbouring state's test is covered in the Haryana police syllabus, and more uniformed service exams are listed under defence and police exams.

Official sources to keep

Punjab Police publishes each notification, syllabus annexure and admit card on the Punjab Police website. Punjab School Education Board books cover Punjab history and Punjabi grammar well, and NCERT books from Classes 6 to 10 build the science and polity base.

Frequently asked questions

How does the SI paper differ from the constable paper in Punjab?

The topics are similar, but the SI test has two scored papers instead of one, more weight for computers and reasoning, data interpretation, and negative marking of a quarter mark as reported. Both ranks must clear a Punjabi qualifying paper.

Is Punjabi compulsory for Punjab Police jobs?

Yes. You need Punjabi up to matriculation, and you must pass the Punjabi qualifying paper. Punjabi questions also appear in the scored papers.

Do the physical tests add to my merit?

No. In recent constable and SI drives the PST and PMT were qualifying only, so rank depends on the written test.

What qualification is needed for Punjab Police SI?

You must hold a degree, and you also need matriculation with Punjabi. Check the notification for any cadre specific condition.

Do Punjab Police papers cut marks for wrong answers?

For the SI papers, reports describe 1/4 mark deducted per wrong answer. Recent constable papers were reported without negative marking. Read the marking rule in your notification, since it can change.

How long is the Punjabi qualifying paper?

It has 50 questions to be done in one hour, and you need 50 percent to pass. It does not count towards your rank.
