Maharashtra constable route: 50 mark ground test, then a 100 mark Marathi paper

Police bharti syllabus for the physical and written tests

Defence and police12th passMaharashtraUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The police bharti syllabus for a Maharashtra Police Constable has two scored parts: a 50 mark physical test of running and shot put, followed by a 100 mark objective written test in Marathi on arithmetic, general knowledge and current affairs, an intelligence test and Marathi grammar. You must score at least half the physical marks to be called for the paper, and at least 40 in the paper for your name to remain on the list.

Police bharti is the everyday word in Maharashtra for police recruitment, and each district police unit, commissionerate and State Reserve Police Force group selects its own candidates under the state's recruitment rules. Your final merit adds the physical and written marks together. This guide covers both tests, the topics, body standards, eligibility and a plan that trains your legs and your pen at the same time.

The order of selection in Maharashtra

Under the amended constable recruitment rules, the ground comes first:

  1. Document and height check at the unit, to confirm you meet the basic standards.
  2. Physical test of 50 marks. You need 25 or more to move on.
  3. Written test of 100 marks for candidates called in a ratio of 1:10 against the vacancies of each category, so 10 SC posts bring in about 100 SC candidates, plus anyone tied with the last one.
  4. Merit list combining both scores, then medical examination and character verification.

Since only the top tenth per category from the ground reach the paper, a strong physical score is not just a pass mark; it is your ticket to the written test.

Physical test events and marks

Constable physical test, 50 marks
EventMenWomen
Long run1600 m, 20 marks800 m, 20 marks
Sprint100 m, 15 marks100 m, 15 marks
Shot put15 marks15 marks

Marks in each event are awarded on a time or distance scale printed in the notice, so faster runners and longer throws earn more. The weight of the shot and the full scoring scale differ for men and women; read them in the advertisement of your unit.

Police driver posts have a different ground test, built on a long run and shot put for men or two runs for women, plus a 50 mark driving skill test. Check the separate pattern if you are applying as a driver.

Police bharti syllabus for the written paper

Written test, 100 marks, 90 minutes
SubjectMain topics
ArithmeticLCM and HCF, percentage and discount, gain and loss, ratio, work sums, mensuration, area and volume
General knowledge and current affairsPolity, economy, geography and the past of India and Maharashtra, science, computers, sports, national and international news
Intelligence testSeries, analogy, coding, blood relations, direction, classification, sentence and word arrangement, syllogism
Marathi grammarParts of speech, sandhi, samas, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, idioms (vakprachar) and correct usage

Every item offers four options, and the paper is set in Marathi. Many guides describe the four subjects as carrying about 25 marks each, but the rules only list the subjects, so do not assume a fixed split. Published patterns from recent cycles also show no negative marking; confirm this in your notice.

Each recruitment round has its own advertisement from the unit or from the state portal. Read the pattern, scoring scale and minimum marks there before you start training.

Height, chest, age and education

  • Education: HSC (class 12) passed through a recognised board, or an equivalent the state accepts.
  • Age: 18 to 28 for open category district police candidates, with the upper limit up to 33 for reserved categories. SRPF posts have used a lower upper limit. Check the notice for ex servicemen and other relaxations.
  • Height: district police units want male candidates to stand 165 cm or taller, and female candidates 155 cm. SRPF has asked for a taller minimum for men.
  • Chest (men): at least 79 cm unexpanded with an expansion of 5 cm or more.

Candidates who fall short on height or chest are sent home at the first check, before any test, so measure yourself honestly early on.

Training for both tests together

You have to win two different contests. A plan of about four months could look like this:

  • Mornings: four days a week on the track, alternating long runs and 100 metre sprints, and two days of shot put drills with a coach or senior at your local ground.
  • Evenings: 90 minutes on books, with arithmetic on alternate days, Marathi grammar on the other days and 20 minutes of state and national news daily.
  • Weekends: one timed 100 question paper of 90 minutes, then one full ground trial with a stopwatch.
Sagar from Satara can run 1600 metres in good time but his shot put is weak, which costs him about 8 marks. He moves two of his running days to throwing practice for six weeks and adds strength work. His total ground score rises by 6 marks, enough to move him well inside the 1:10 shortlist for his category.

For the written test, the class 10 Marathi grammar book and state board maths texts are the right level.

Police recruitment in other states

If you mean police recruitment outside Maharashtra, the exam is very different. Uttar Pradesh uses a single written paper followed by physical tests that are pass or fail, while Bihar gives physical test marks the deciding role. Read the UP police constable syllabus, the Bihar police syllabus or the MP police constable syllabus for those routes, and browse our police and defence section for every force we cover. Maharashtra aspirants who also want a revenue post can compare the Talathi bharti syllabus.

Frequently asked questions

What comes first in Maharashtra police bharti, physical or written?

The physical test. Under the amended rules you take the 50 mark ground test first, and only those with at least 25 marks who rank within 1:10 of the category vacancies are called for the written paper.

How long is the police bharti written test and what is it out of?

It is 100 marks in 90 minutes, all objective, covering arithmetic, general knowledge with current affairs, an intelligence test and Marathi grammar. You need at least 40 to be considered.

Is the police bharti paper in English?

The written test for constables is conducted in Marathi. Strong Marathi reading is therefore essential, not only for the grammar section.

What is the running distance in police bharti?

Men run 1600 metres and women run 800 metres for 20 marks, and both run 100 metres for 15 marks. Shot put adds another 15.

Which class must I have passed for police bharti?

A 12th (HSC) pass from a recognised board. The age band for open category district police has been 18 to 28, with more years allowed to reserved categories.

Will a guess reduce my police bharti score?

Patterns published for recent rounds show none, so a guess costs nothing. The advertisement for your unit is the final word, so read its marking rule.
