NEET Cut Off: Qualifying Marks by Category

Entrance50th for general40th for reservedUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The NEET cut off is the minimum percentile, and the matching score range, you need to qualify for medical and dental counselling: the 50th percentile for unreserved and EWS candidates and the 40th for OBC, SC and ST. In the latest cycle the exam was held again as Re-NEET, and the general qualifying score came out at 213 out of 720, far higher than the year before.

Remember that qualifying only opens the door to counselling. A government MBBS seat needs a score well above these figures, so read the qualifying tables together with the admission trends further down.

What the NEET cut off means

NEET has two kinds of cut off and students often mix them up. The qualifying cut off is published by the NTA with the result and is stated as a percentile. Every candidate at or above it is declared qualified and may register for counselling. The admission cut off, or closing rank, is the last rank admitted to a particular college and course, and it only becomes known as counselling rounds finish.

Since the qualifying rule is a percentile, the score that matches it moves each year with the spread of marks. A tough paper pulls it down, and an easier paper or higher scoring field pushes it up.

Qualifying marks versus the marks you really need

Clearing 213 or 144 does not get you a government college. Seats are filled strictly by rank in counselling, and popular government MBBS seats close at much higher scores. The 15 percent all India quota is handled by the Medical Counselling Committee, and the remaining state quota by each state's counselling authority, each with its own closing ranks.

For seat-level trends, see our pages on the closing scores for government MBBS seats, the BDS government college cut off and the BAMS cut off.

Rohit scored 410 as an OBC candidate. He comfortably crossed the qualifying range, but last year's closing ranks for government MBBS in his state were far higher. He registers for both all India and state counselling, adds BDS and BAMS options to his choice list, and also keeps a plan for a second attempt.

What will shape the next cut off

  • Paper difficulty. The single largest factor. An easier biology section lifts the whole curve.
  • Number of candidates. More test takers means the 50th percentile sits among more scores, though the effect is smaller than difficulty.
  • Exam conditions. The latest cycle, held again as a re-exam with 15 extra minutes, produced a much higher score curve than the year before.
  • Seats on offer. Seat numbers do not change the qualifying percentile, but they strongly move admission closing ranks.

No one can know the next score range before the result, so treat any predicted figure as a guess. Build your target from past closing ranks instead.

How to check the cut off officially

The NTA lists the category-wise percentile and score range in the result press note on neet.nta.nic.in. Your scorecard shows your percentile and all India rank. Closing ranks for each round are released later by the counselling bodies.

Cut offs and the qualifying rules can be revised in a given year by the authorities. Always confirm against the official result notice and the current information bulletin.

Using these numbers for your preparation

Set a target well above the qualifying mark. Take the closing score for the course and quota you want, add a safety margin, and track your full-length mock scores against it each fortnight. The NEET previous year papers are the best way to see what scoring at that level feels like, and the NEET syllabus page shows where the 720 marks come from. Before any of this, confirm your board marks satisfy the NEET eligibility conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NEET qualifying percentile for general category?

It is the 50th percentile for unreserved and EWS candidates. Reserved categories need the 40th percentile, and general candidates with a disability need the 45th.

What was the re NEET cut off for general?

For the latest re-exam, the reported general and EWS range was 715 to 213. OBC, SC and ST candidates needed a score from 212 to 177.

Why is the NEET cut off given as a range?

The top of the range is the highest score in that category group and the bottom is the score at the qualifying percentile. Any score inside the range qualifies.

Is 50th percentile the same as 50 percent marks?

No. A percentile shows the share of candidates who scored at or below you. The 50th percentile simply means you scored at least as much as half the field, which may be well under half the marks.

Does qualifying NEET guarantee an MBBS seat?

No. Qualifying only lets you join counselling. Seats are given by rank, and the closing rank for a government MBBS seat is much higher than the qualifying score.

Where are the cut off figures published?

The NTA includes them in the result press note on its NEET portal. College-level closing ranks come later from MCC and the state counselling authorities.
